The shower is the best alternative. I use a spray bottle with cleaning solution in it and spray the cage down totally while in the shower and let it sit for a little while. Then I turn the shower on and rinse it turning the shower head around in different directions to make sure it gets rinsed thoroughly.
If you don't have a shower you can buy a rubber hose shower adapter for your bathtub that will also work - assuming your cage will fit in the tub.
If your cage is too big for either shower or tub, then you will have to use sponge and elbow grease.
