This intact male was surrendered to me and they were told that he is a Silken Platinum when they bought him from the pet store. Is that really what he is? javascript:self.parent.imageleft('/glidergossip/Photos/20008/2017010319175615570999_10211642277918299_954942659_n.jpg')

Yes, I have corrected his diet. I have all kinds of cages. I have to have extra cages on hand just in case of situations like Charlie.

awesome !

Do you have him on a well known diet now? He needs more than fruits n veg can offer though that is better than what he was previously fed.

Do you have cage requirements for your foster gliders? size, brand ...or just what they come with?

I ask because some don't come with cage and accessories so if you don't have some on hand it would make it difficult to foster those ones. Some that do come with cages the cages are in very rough shape and need replaced, sometimes we don't know how bad of shape they are in until they arrive.

It is ok, I completely understand from your point of view. I would have done the same thing. I have owned Gliders in the past (all rescues) but they were your normal black and gray. Charlie (the one I have now) is the first glider that I have taken in as a surrender in many years. I am unsure of the lineage. The lady who surrendered him to me said that she bought him from Petco and only had him for 6 months then she had to move and could not take him. He was really skinny and scared when I received him. The lady was only feeding him the glider pellet diet. No fruits & veggies and no mealworms. I have been trying to work on his handling. Yes, he will be neutered before adoption. Yes, I would love to help out with fostering if it is needed. I love animals, they are my passion. I try to do as much as I can with other rescues and fostering non wildlife (Wildlife rescue & rehabbing takes up alot of my time).

Now that it's a more reasonable hour and I've had some coffee intake I'd like to explain where I was coming from.

If you work with rescues and rehomes I'm sure you see your fair share of flippers and opportunists. It's no different in the glider community if anything we see it more often because we are focused on one animal rather than the whole spectrum of animals that larger rescues deal with.

We see a brand new member joined the site the day before, ask one question about what color variation the glider is, we assume so they can figure out current market value for that kind of glider. Then the first person that responds is told it's also up for adoption.

The scenario is quite common and those of us that deal with rescues rehomes and or surrenders are very skeptical of people and these scenarios. Our first thought is opportunist, and if the phrase "surrendered to me but hes up for adoption" is used it screams flipper to us.

Of course sometimes we are ( I am ) mistaken, I have met other rescuers and rehabers on here that are legit, they are far a few between though. The last one I met was Claudia she has an awesome rescue and rehab center in Washington state. I'm not sure if she still actively reads on this forum I pulled her over to the educational based groups on facebook.

I did look into the two rescue places you mentioned, the Heidi's Legacy is about 20 minutes away from me, I don't have other pets aside from gliders but I do know a Mom and daughter that are very avid Dog people with years of experience with shepards and shepard breeding that love to donate and help dogs in need so I will definately be sending them the info, they also happen to live right in Lithia.

Any way, If it seemed I was a bit harsh I apologize and I appreciate you not taking it as a personal attack and keeping your replies civil. Sometimes, replies are not that civil

Now my question to you is, are you going to continue taking in gliders ? Or was this just a one time thing? If you might continue to foster and adopt out there are some questions I'd like to ask. I also like to keep track of potential fosterers in different parts of fla for future reference.

I am not personally able to foster, so I found other avenues that I can help with. I have 3 cages that consist of 9 gliders I'm at my limit as far as space for more cages goes.

What I AM able to do, is mentor new owners, find educated glider owners that are looking for more gliders, organize railroads for transport, in some cases I can get help for medical care, donated safe items for a glider in need ( cages, cage sets pouches toys water bottles ect.) Help find glider experienced vets nation wide. I also have had locals come to my house to learn how to do nail trimmings, make diets, make glider safe toys etc...

As I said before I have a huge amount of glider resources and an awesome network of veteran glider owners I work with. We have one group of people who does everything anonymously that is an outreach group. When we see a glider in need, we reach out to the owner and do what ever we can to help fill that need, some are extreme cases some are not.

Last year we also had our first Fla glider gathering here in Dover, we had about 80 people for an educational based get together. Most of the people were fla residents but the speakers and vendors came from other states. We will be hosting the gathering again this year in September. The group link is below, if you'd like to join there are some awesome local owners in there.https://www.facebook.com/groups/653305761512723/

Lastly, the intact male you currently have... is he lineaged? will he be neutered before adopting out??

Well alrighty !! Welcome to the glider world :) I'm not familiar with
Those folks but I look forward to looking them up, as I said new resources
Are very much welcome.

Save our Sweethearts in Fort Myers is an awesome
Exotic rescue, however her doors have been
Closed to new aurrenders until their new house is built and her new facility
Is ready.

Anyway, look forward to getting to know you better
There are a couple great glider groups on Facebook
If your interested let me know, one is very educational
Based but does have a vending group for selling and adoptions.

Sorry for typos its 4 am n I'm on my cell...

I am a wildlife rehabber. I do work with Carol Hardy (Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Central Florida 501c3). I do rescuing and fostering with Heidi's Legacy also 501c3. I have several people that can vouch for me that I am not a animal flipper. Every animal that comes to me gets a thorough vet screening, vaccinations if needed, spay and/or neutered if allowed for that type of animal being seen, chipped and what ever else is needed. I do background checks and vet checks before any adoption is even approved.
Leela Posted - Jan 04 2017 : 12:11:11 AM
ok, I deal with rescues and surrendered gliders all over fla. I work with a 501c3 Rescue in fort myers among other resources across the state. I have friends all over the country that work with rescues and surrenders and fostering. Mostly glider specific, but some are full blown rescues with all kinds of animals.

If your a legit rescue local to me it be another recourse to have and trust me we need more recourses. Florida is seriously over saturated with gliders in need of new homes.

However, If your not a legit rescue facility and just consider yourself a rescuer, taking in surrenders and "adopting" them out with a fee is considered flipping. If your not a legit rescue with the appropriate licensing, rehome fee's are illegal in fla.

DawnMarie Posted - Jan 03 2017 : 11:47:20 PM
I am not a animal flipper, I don't go out seeking animals just to sell them. Every time I have ad a animal surrendered to me, the owner has always been the one who contacted me. Sorry if you got the wrong impression. When I rehome the rescues that I receive I do full background checks along with home checks and vet checks.
Leela Posted - Jan 03 2017 : 11:35:53 PM
He's a white face. Nope, I'm full up and have plenty of rescues and surrenders in my area as it is I also don't support flipping. Is there an adoption fee for him?
