Restaurants, shops, grocery stores - all have mice at some time or another. We cant all become hermits and never leave our houses. (altho at times I would certainly like to!)

You're right but don't you guys think this should just be another reason we shouldn't drag our gliders out everywhere we go? I think so.

agreed!
a couple of months ago a local chinese place got shut down because they had 3 cats and like 12 rats in their freezer....

Miss doolittle this is a highly contagious decease, I have visited and seen the shelter that has had this decease here in Melbourne. You should not rehome any animals as it is highly likely they can carry this decease with them. It obviously stays dormant for some time. The sanctuary advised a gap of not taking in any ringtail possums here for a period of five years which is a long time even after continued decontaminating. We had to dip our shoes in disinfectant all through the tour of the shelter and were advised to wash all our cloths before touching any animals after this visit.
Just like to add that the shelter here that picked up this decease is one of the cleanest you have ever seen. So you can not be faulted for keeping a unclean premises its just that the spores can get into tight little places and then stay therefor ages. It is a really hard thing to eradicate once it has infested a place.

No matter how clean we keep our animals, there is ALWAYS going to be some risk. One of my ringtail possums had toxoplasmosis a while back luckily it was caught in time and he recovered, it isnt a commonly seen in captive animals or it is mis diagnosed. The vet said that it would have been in the mulch I used in the aviary. It really freaked me out. The Zoo's vet told me that some of thier Meer Cats (sp) also contracted it. and zoos hose down and discinfect thier enclosure constantly.

Dont beat your self up its not something that you could have possibly known could happen.

I know when my possums got toxoplasmosis I went completely nuts cleaning, but I eventually realised that no matter how clean I kept my animals there was always a slight risk something could happen.

All you can do is take all the precautionary steps and pray that nothing happens, or you will go nuts constonatly worrying with what if's.
