Here are some articles that will be of interest to pet owners... Again, I know the articles are talking about dogs and cats - but this is starting to appear in our gliders, too.

Thanks, Rita:

I am sure other health care workers out there can attest: MRSA and VRE have been problems in hospitals and nursing homes for years now, unfortunately. They're scary bugs!

When the doc tells us, "Take ALL of this antibiotic. Do not just quit taking it when you are feeling better!" we need to take heed. Not following through on the full course of antibiotic puts everyone in danger, because those microorganisms can build up defense against the antibiotics.

Also people who demand antibiotics for a viral infection are a problem because antibiotics don't help with viruses and thus the body's bacteria build a antibiotic resistance.

I have experience with this I was dignosed with MRSA about three years ago and HAVE taken all the antibiotics on several occasions and I still have outbreaks of the virus It is nasty and very painful. MRSA is a staff infection and is contageous by the skin, and can be passed on to your pets from you. I have had many outbreaks from my eye, belly, knee, back, and on my arms. It usually happens when you have an ingrown hair folical. I was told by the doctors that everyone has MRSA but to an extent and most will never experience an outbreak to transmit the virus. I have been to several different doctors and had many different antibiotics and still have not been able to get totally rid of it.

Yes, you are correct. MRSA is all around us at this point in history. I am sorry that you've had to experience this. :-(

I saw a thing on the news last night about MRSA research...they are linking it to genetics somehow or other. Something about the initial immune response being high but not as strong afterward and scientists are trying to figure out why. Here's the link to the article http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa090714_lj_stjames.3dfce55a.html

There is new evidence just published where they give cholesterol medicine and it changes the cell membrane to clear and MRSA is no longer resistant

Do you have a link on that info so I can read up on it. I get the outbreaks all the time, sometimes they are not very bad but other times they get very bad and I have been hospitalized for it in hte past but recently it has been suttle and some antibiotics have been helping out.

It is not really the overuse of antibiotics in people causing the problem so much as the use of antibiotics in livestock and food. Cows, pigs, chickens, etc are all dosed preventatively to keep them from getting sick. It is put in the food and water. MSRA and other 'super' bugs have come directly out of feed lots. It is really scary. And, while not finishing antibiotics doesn't help, it doesn't do as much harm as one would think.

The best way to fight these is buy organic - especially milk and meat!

A little birdie shared this with me today and I agree with it.
