My sugar glider Mona hisses whenever she defecates and has always done this. Is this a sign that she is unhealthy? she eats better than the rest do. She has been seeming to be a little lethargic lately, but her ears stay upright and she does run and jump around with the rest. She also has started to squint one of her eyes. I have had her about 3 years now, but her exact age is unknown to me. She is also one that has most likely had a lot of offspring, two of whom I know for sure. Anyways, what is with the hissing and the squinty eye? Should i be worried?

my belief with the hissing may be that she's constipated, but what can i do to help this?

You should probably take her to the vet, just to be sure. If she is constipated, I know there are foods you can feed to try to lessen it, though I can't think of them at the moment. Take he to the vet though, preferably sooner rather than later. Lethargy in gliders is usually a sign of something bad and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Take you're baby too the vet. If you don't have a vet, tell us were you are, so we can help you find a vet. ~Erica~

I've read that sugar gliders can hide illnesses really well, because they are prey animals and don't want a predator to be able to identify when they're not at their best. If you're noticing her being lethargic and she seems to be in pain/discomfort (ergo the hissing) while peeing, those could both be signs that something is wrong. You should take her to the vet. If you wait, she could get worse.

You can feed her pumpkin. Just plain canned pumpkin...not the pie filling. It works for both constipation AND diarrhea. Don't ask me how but it does.

Did you try the tent test? Pinching gently the skin between the shoulders, pulling up, and then seeing how long it takes to go back down? If it takes more than a few seconds, it's a pretty good sign of constipation. If this is a CHRONIC problem, as in not just once or twice in an isolated fashion, it really is important to do a vet visit to rule out things like a bowel impaction or blockage.... Hope your baby is well!
