Hello all,
I am new on this cite today, and have been looking around for the last few hours
At the end of the month, I am supposed to be getting a sugar glider. I have been doing research on cages, and could use some help. I found two websites with possible choices

www.sugar-gliders.com/large-cage-kit.htm

I was looking at the $ 193.18 one

www.sugar-glider-store.com/brisbane-cage-package-set.html

I am not sure if these are good/safe cages or not. I don't mind spending the extra money as long as they are good quality, and most importantly safe.

If these are not good companies or cages, do you have any suggestions? Also, I have been reading about sugar gliders getting poisoned from the metal of their cages. Is this true? what do I need to look out for?

Any suggestions on toys and making them a happy habitat is much appreciated :)

Welcome.

Either of those cages will be fine. I would go with the SunCoast Large Cage but the Brisbane is good for up to 3 gliders.

You can use the search feature and read a number of responses posted recently to cage selection questions.

Please consider getting two gliders rather than one. They are colony animals and really do need a companion.

Getting a second glider later will require the expense of an entire second cage and set up because a new glider in your home should be quarantined for 30 days in another room until vet checks and two fecal exams have been completed 30 days apart.

Getting two gliders together will be less expensive in the long run and you will not have to deal with gradual introductions. Gliders are territorial and might not accept a new glider added to its cage.

My recommendations:

Get two Gliders instead of one.

Get a Glide-arium , minimum size 100 gallons.

Get the Glide-arium with the wheel mount and buy a Custom Cruiser. See both this link and this link .

To line the bottom of the Glide-arium purchase two Custom Cage Liners (get two so you can have one to put in the cage while you are laundering the other).

Make a Glider Kitchen/Glider Diner . I put mine on the floor of the cage and not only does a bowl of food go in it but also a small ceramic/porcelain water dish with just a little fresh water. Keeps the cage super clean!

To hang the cage pouch make a simple long braid out of fleece and twist it around one of the horizontal bars of the Glide-arium. Attach the braid at each end to the bar with medium book binder rings and then attach the cage pouch to the rings using plastic c-links .

Attach any other toys as desired.

We had a gliderarium and it started snagging and was flimsy so we just ditched it and bought a cage.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. If you have any more, let me know. I have a month to get everything together, and figure out what I need.
I am looking into finding another little guy :) I know they don't do well alone

My first cage. Was the one above ^ the rat chinchilla one and I absolutely hated it. The bars are flimsy, a wheel can not fit through the door, and some of the bars actually started falling off! Yes it's cheap, but its not a very reliable cage. I got my new one from sun coast and I loooovvvee it!

That's terrible. I have not even received my cage yet. I was really excited about it. I hope it will at least last a little while.

Dont be worried. I have used the budget cages before and have a few around for emergencies. They can last a long time but are like any other cage that comes through the mail where sometimes you get a bad or broken one.

The budget cages do allow you to have more space at a lower price. Here are two examples of the 5 Level Cages put together.

Thanks Kazko I feel better I can't wait to setup my new girls cage. She is currently in a small hamster cage at least that is what is looks like. I ordered a bunch of stuff online. I spent a lot of money. I even bought a couple of yards of purple and brown fleece to make some hammocks ropes and toys. I bought a big wheel and many other things. She is going to be spoiled.

Oh, how I love spoiled gliders!!!! I wish all pets in the whole wide world could be spoiled. I really think they should be.

Congrats on your new cage lilrob, look forward to photos.

Jalaumann, I'm happy you found your way here and are learning a lot of good info. As for cage suggestions, start with how many gliders you're planning on keeping in one and your budget.

If you're considering the Brisbane, don't get the starter package, it's better to pick up accessories elsewhere and get a better wheel, won't really cost much more if you shop around either. I did a breakdown on some suggestions and pricing once before, I'll try to find it and post link.

Consider the Madagascar as well, it's a little more roomy then the Brisbane, different footprint, so not sure what fits your space. If you can go footprint of the Brisbane, consider if you could afford taller cages with those w x d dimensions.
If ordering Brisbane or Madagascar

** LOWEST PRICING ON 'HQ' SUGAR GLIDER CAGES!

Everyone that gave suggestions has offered good info to start with, so just take a deeper look into the ones that are the biggest in your price range, then select from one of those. If you still are in debate between any of them, go ahead and post a thread on those cages and get some votes on them. Then go with the popular vote in your list of acceptable cages. It's really the best way to help make up your mind if you continue to have doubts.

I wish you the best of luck in your search and look forward to seeing more posts from you.

I thought I would share this wonderful modification for those of you who have small and/or guillotine cage doors. It can be done on any cage, even the flimsy wire ones.

That looks so sweet! Glad my girls haven't seen it, we don't have room for one like that, but I wish we did.

TJ, the medium cage like that doesn't really take up that much room and it's plenty of room for at least 4 gliders : )

Thank you everyone, your input has been amazing. I think that I have it down to two cages. The brisbane and the madagascar.

www.sugar-glider-store.com/cages.html

I will have either two or three babies in the cage. Which one do you think is better? I know that the taller the cage, the better. So that leads me to possibly the madagascar?

If you have any experience with these cages, input would be much appreciated. :)

I have the Madagascar cage and so far love it. I made a thread showing photos of it all set up as well as listing the qualities I like and the things I didn't like, giving sort of a review. The girls have been in the cage for over a week, we already had cleaning day, and it was simple enough to clean and setup. Of coarse it did take a little longer than their original cage due to the size difference and more furnishing inside.

The Brisbane cage is similar size to my girls original cage, it was roomy, but I do really like the more space the Madagascar gives. If I had the space and money, I would have opted for the large sturdy cage from Suncoast which would offer even more space for my 2 girls.

IMO, for 3 gliders the Madagascar or something larger would be better.

I have actually re-arranged the cage furnishings and have added more stuff. I still feel there is room for more and may be rearranging again a little when I get new travel wheel. I'm going to use both regular and travel wheel in main cage to offer options, then the travel size will go with us when we travel, of coarse

I got my new cage in yesterday. It was not fun to build and there was a few bent bars that I had to fix. But other than that it is nice and Jeanette loves it. I am going to start making her some toys for it today. I will post a picture of it when I am done.

Kazko - How did you create the door you have on yours I would like to do that to mine?
