I think both of my suggies are female. I pretty much assumed since they did not have the bald spot on the top of their heads. The original owner got them from pocket pets...do they neuter the males? It is hard to hold them to check since they aren't really hand tame, but I can't seem to find the pouch. Can someone tell me how to check and or post pictures of their anatomy?? Please.

I think PP does neuter. It can be difficult to see the pouch unless they move a certain way. A neutered male may have a little spot where the pom used to be.

A vet should also be able to verify the genders if they are experienced.

I guess I'll ask him when we go back next week. When I went in I was assuming they were female and hadn't asked him to check, but I will now.

Can't help you with the boys as all of mine were neutered when I got them, and yes, I got them from PP and they neuter.

If they are male then they are def neutered. The original owner got them from pocket pets, and I have been looking at pictures on the internet and they most def. don't have a scrotum. When I try and check I can't find a pouch. @JazzNZoeysmom...can you show me a pick of what your boys look like for comparison purposes please??

The Pom (scrotum) is in the middle of their belly. If they are pocket pets gliders they probably had a pom off neuter. There may be a small scar on the belly but fur may have covered it.

Female gliders have a slit in the middle of their belly which is the pouch. In young joeys it appears "U" shaped.

Where Zoeys pouch is, on a non-neutered male you will see a pom. A round tuft of hair like a bunny tail. On a neutered boy you will either see nothing or possibly a small scar where the sac was removed. If it wasn't removed during neuter, you would see the tuft but it would look like a deflated balloon.

You will not see their genitals unless they have them out. It looks like a little red worm coming out of their bottoms and is forked on the end like a snake tongue. You can probably use the SEARCH up top and find older threads with photos.

I'm pretty sure Harley was a pp joey and he just has a small scar on his lower abdomen where his pom was. I'd take a picture but he won't be still. Omi and Kai have the same scar but they have longer fur on their belly's so you can't really see too well and my camera stinks. I'll try to get one though.

From what you all are saying I'm pretty sure that at least 1 (the 1 that was sick and now lets me pick it up) is a neutered male. I am going to keep trying to look, he/she has a little bit longer fur on the belly and I can't see a scar or a pouch. If I don't find anything I will ask the vet when we go back for our recheck on Monday. My other sugar glider still won't let me handle it, but as soon as I get my bonding pouch and can handle it I will check it too. Good think I haven't yet named them.. he he.

I had this same problem with my first glider. He was from Pocket Pets and I rescued him from his original owner. He didn't have a pom and I couldn't see much of anything because he wasn't tame and wouldn't let me. So I was a little unsure of his gender. The first "exotic" vet I took him to told me he was a girl. I went like 4 months thinking so, until he got sick and I had to take him to the vet. I decided to go to a different vet because the first ones didn't even know how to handle him lol. The second vet I went to, who is VERY experience and amazing with gliders, confirmed that he is, in fact, a male. She showed me where the scar was so I knew what to look for in the future with pom off neutered males. So... moral of the story... if they won't let you look and you're unsure, have a professional look for you lol.

When I took my suggie to the vet a few weeks ago I had just assumed it was a she, so I never asked the vet to look. I will be going back for a recheck on Monday or Tuesday, so I will ask him to check for me. Both my suggies were taken to a local animal control by the original owner who was being deployed. A friend of mine works at animal control and took them in. She had them for a few weeks before deciding it was too much and she was afraid her dog was going to get them and then gave them to me. She pretty much didn't get any information from the original owner other than that she got them from the mall. I know it was PP, bc we were at the mall and saw them there...I was thinking then that it was a little scetch to be selling sugar gliders in the middle of the mall. I have since a bunch of sugar gliders listed on craigs list since.

I can try to get pictures of my male for you. It's just a little closer to the cloaca than the pouch is, or so it seems.

No, not yet. I have tried looking myself and cannot find a pouch. She/he goes in for her recheck this week and I will ask the vet to check for me then. I will keep you posted.

Here are some photo's of INTACT male gliders. Intact males are easily recognised due to the bald patch on their heads (from 12wk+), scent glands on chest (from around 16wk+) and their poms (from birth!)

This little guy is about 4wk old.


This big guy is 3yrs old.


This is what the belly of an intact male can look like. Not all males will have staining to this extent (Stitch is pretty 'manly'), but there is often a little baldness and some discolouring.


This one looks a bit nicer, he was quite oily on the pic above.


And the baldy head.... Again this one is quite oily, his head was damp to touch - and STINKY!

Before anyone gets concerned about the stained belly, the flash from the camera on the oil made it look 10 times worse, but at least it shows how much oil can come from their glands. He was damp to touch that day, never seen him like that before. The next day he was fine. I think the glider next to him was my female, she had twins a few days OOP, her belly fur is a little dark from the stretching and I think you can kinda see the slit where her pouch is

Yeah, they DEFINITELY aren't intact. That is a little too obvious for me to miss...he he.
