someone asked me if dartanian was a pie bald? I thought he was a mosaic. What are your opinions?

I don't know what he is but he is stunningly gorgeous!

I have seen pics of Mosaics but not of a piebald but I'm sure someone on here will know...

I dont even know what a pie bald would look like. can anyone tell me?

Piebald Sugar Gliders:


There is a phrase called "Piebald Marker" I believe. This means, a Glider shows piebald markings, but doesn't actually carry the gene. Similar to fool's gold. I looks like real gold, but isn't. I thought piebald is just another variation of mosaic like, ringtail, WFB, ringtail, etc? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

Morgan, Piebalds are pretty rare and expensive to buy FYI. They definitely aren't the typical Glider.

Dar has a dark spot on the top of his left front leg. small but different from the rest of him

Hmmm, im not really sure. Hopefully someone more experience under this category can help. On my first post i realized I listed ringtail twice. Te second one was suppose to say white tip tailed. Oops

I just watched a web cast of Glider talk and one of the speakers(from the pet glider)talked about Pied or piebald mosaics.

She was saying that a true piebald has 2 mosaic parents but if the glider has the "white splash markings" on a color coat they are "Piebald markers/traits"...if I got that right...and Piebald gliders have not produced piebald babies but they are still trying to see if they can get definitive results.

Piebald is a mosaic variation. You do not have to have two mosaic parents to have a piebald sugar glider. This just comes sporadically. Though the chances of having a piebald joey will greaten if two mosaics are paired together.
I would definitely say that Dar is a piebald marker at the least. According to The Pet Glider, he would be a piebald. My Peter is a piebald marker, but he only has two spots on either side of his stripe, one is more noticeable than the other. The odd white on Dar's back is a piebald characteristic. It looks like a form of the "reverse stripe" which is said to be a marker. Any direct contrast in color on a mosaic besides a splash of white on their neck (which is very common) is abnormal for mosaics.
Also, the dark spot on his leg that you talked about is a piebald marker. I have been doing much research on them lately. There are not many piebalds around, but they can cost upwards of $2000. The Pet Glider has three piebald sugar gliders for sale on their website. If you look at their coloring, you could compare Dar's coloring to theirs.

Aalysonh is correct, piebald is just a variation mosaic, it's like saying your glider is a silver mosaic, or a ringtail mosaic, still mosaic. In theory, any mosaic parent can produce one, there has just been a higher prevalence seen in certain lines, the exact inheritance is still being studied and not fully understood. What constitutes a piebald is also slightly debatable, different people will give you different answers. Personally, I would categorize Dartanian as having a "reverse stripe," which is essentially just having white where the black dorsal stripe would be. Some people would probably call that pied, some would not. Regardless, it is a very unique and striking marking, he's a handsome boy for sure.
