I recently just rescued a female suggie from losing her previous cage mate. Not sure on his death. She's all checked and even healthier now with me. It's been 13 days since I had her and I got back from vaca tonight. I keep watch over her and my other suggie going through the bonding process. Sometimes she will slap him and get really aggressive like on whatever cage she's in. I noticed a lump on her lower right now and look up pregnant pictures of other gliders and it looks exactly the same but just one. Could she already be pregnant? I heard their only pregnant for 16 days and give birth and in the pouch for another two months or so... I'm just wondering if they either give birth less than 16 days or she got pregnant before her old cage mate passed and the owner didn't know? He told me she's had twins not too long ago. Please help me I don't know what to do with this!

Pregnancy does last an approximate of 16 days. If you can see a lump it mean that there a joey already In Pouch. The website below has great information about joeys and the like:

www.suzsugargliders.com

Being pregnant your female needs an special diet, she needs more nutrients to be able to feed the joey she had IP and herself. Otherwise, she could end up losing the joey. Being a lone parent, in a new house, and trying to go through introductions; she is probably very stressed, this can lead to joey rejection or cannibalization. Please, at least don't force her to go through the introductions with your other glider just yet, also your other glider can steal the joey from her pouch and kill it; this is specially the case if he is not the parent.

Can you tell us what diet are you feeding? Depending on what diet she is currently on, there could be a simple way of modifying it so it is appropriate for a pregnant female and her joey.

Even so, I would go to Suz' webpage and prepare for joey rejection.

When I got her the previous owner said he fed her fruits and veggies with supplements like the calcium and vitamins.. And he said chicken and egg on occasions. Now I give them chicken mixed with a boiled egg with the shell on for natural calcium and protein. She looks a lot better before I had her. I think she's doing well. She does seem stressed but I after taken her out of the cage after last night seeing the lump. She's in the bigger cage for more exercise and my male I take him out for almost two hours every night with me. I have a feeling he isn't the daddy suggie of her new baby and she got pregnant right before her old mate died and when I got her which was 14 days ago

As I said, if you can see a lump, that means there is a joey IP; that would mean that your girl has been pregnant for 4 or more weeks, so your boy couldn't be the father.

Gliders have specific nutritional needs. Yes, the proteins, fruits and veggies; but all balanced out. Specially pregnant females need extra protein so they can provide for their joey. Please look into the diets listed in the link below:

www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/index.asp?Diet

These diets are approved diets for sugar gliders that have help them keep healthy for years. The HPW is easy to prepare, they even have a breeders formula which is specifically made for pregnant, lactating gliders; the only downside is that you have to wait for shipping. BML ingredients are easy to get, and I think she provides some instructions as to how to modify it to feed pregnant females. The links are below:

www.critterlove.com/food--sides.html - HPW
www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/leadbeat.html - BML

Please be prepared for joey rejection. Suz website describes what materials you need and how to set it all up. You can also ask here and people with more experience could help you. And do all you can to change their diet, right now their diet is not very good and their health could be compromised, specially momma glider and joey.

One more thing, if your male is not neutered I would recommend you neuter him soon. It could help making him less aggressive, plus it will decrease the odor, and the biggest fact will be that you won't have undesired joeys. Even if you want joeys, it is not recommended to breed glider that don't have lineage because of health issues and more.

Also, I forgot to mention. Candy is a member here, she created a diet of her own, you can find it below:

www.gliderkids-diet.com/Staple-Recipes.html

You may be able to ask her about an adequate diet for pregnant females.

I wanted to comment, as well, that before having tried to introduce your glider you should have gone through a quarantine period of 30 days for all of the reasons listed in her report below:

If you choose one of the widely used glider feeding plans, you only need to offer about an extra half portion of each food you offer (staple, fruits and veggies) for your female with joeys in pouch. She will eat what she needs to produce milk for the joeys.
