One of my females has a mating wound above her shoulder. It isn't visible just by looking, it's covered by fur. But when you move the fur back it's an open wound about 2mm in diameter. She's currently in a sleeping pouch with another adult female (sister), intact adult male and two neutered adult males. They've been together for nearly 3 years and have great family colony dynamics, this is the first mating wound i've had.

Phoned my vet, he said to apply antiseptic cream and monitor it for 10 days, if it isn't healing then bring her in and he will prescribe something stronger. I ordered some F10 antiseptic ointment this morning, it will be delivered tomorrow. Is salt water recommended tonight?

I can't remember whether the vet said to split her from the colony. My only concern is that she's heavily pregnant with twins. I do have a spare cage and I have a snugglesafe heat pad and a sleeping pouch with a case for the heat pad behind it so she'l be fine heat wise being alone. It's just the pregnancy thing, if i'm having to keep her alone for a week or so. And how the colony will accept her and two joeys when she's healed, if they aren't used to seeing the joeys from OOP.

Any advise? Will a few more sleeping pouches in the cage and maybe moving her into one on her own if I see her in the pouch colony be ok? And salt water on a cotton bud tonight until the ointment comes tomorrow?

I will only post on this because I happened to be talking with Priscilla Price on Friday about the mother of my newest little boy. She had gotten a horrible mating wound while nearing her twins being OOP. They had to take her to have her stitched (in her case) but, she was put back in with her colony. And she was able to make it through that stress and healing well though pregnant. I would think other than handling her very gently, that the salt water solution is a good idea until you can get her some other meds. Even with those meds...usually they are 'cream' based of some sort, and a salt water flush and dry between applications might still be a good idea.

Unless he is continuing to aggressively pursue her, or if she is showing signs of distress...I don't think you would need to separate her.

Just my 2 cents.
