I am hearing some information about giving Gatorade to your gliders, I'm curious if I should mix it with their water and if so how much. and also any info about what I should be feeding them as a whole would be appreciated, I've looked all over the place and received lots of different information and wanna hear from happy owners.

Gatorade, nope. No need to feed it, they do just fine with water. In my opinion, they shouldn't have anything mixed in with their water.

Food in general, there's a lot of different diets available, you just need to do the research and pick one that your gliders will eat, and that you feel comfortable feeding them. Some popular choices are LGRS, HPW, BML, Priscilla's Diet, the Blended Diet, BLG's Mix and Match diet....

General rule: pre-packaged diets should be avoided.

ahh I have a question about the diets, when you make them how should you store them (freezing or fridge)?

In the freezer. :) They won't last more than a day or so in the fridge.

I give my girls water with a little pedialyte mixed in to ensure they're hydrated, which is something the vet told me was ok to do. She said to avoid any other 'drinks/mixtures' for the water.

Avoid 'pre made' foods like Gliderade or something like that; anything of the pellet 'fam' should be avoided.

I've HEARD cat and dog food are HUGE nono's, so I don't even dabble in that.

I feed my girls the BML diet with 'fresh' fruits and veggies (which are kept in separate containers, already chopped, in the freezer). To avoid freezer burn in the container the veggies are in I place saran wrap on top of the veggies (not the container).

I am a relatively new owner myself, but what I have found works well is to make a "smoothie" (Mine was spinach and other greens, oatmeal, some low fat chicken baby food with no onion, random fruit and veggies, orange juice fortified with calcium and vitamin d, some shrimp, and a couple hard boiled eggs) and I poured that into 2 ice trays and froze it. So I give them one of those smoothie cubes and some fresh chopped fruits and veggies along with a random protein each day. Sometimes it is shrimp, sometimes egg, sometimes mealworms and crickets. They love all the food I give em, my babies aren't picky :)

SugarPoi, you want to get your gliders on one of the recommended diets.. it's not best to just pick throw together a smoothie without having figured out the nutritional value and the Ca: P ratio of it.

Also, insects shouldn't (to my understanding) be fed as a protein source.... best to keep them as a treat.

Seeing as how I got my idea off this website, perhaps it IS one of the recommended diets? My smoothie is the same shown in the video, I just added more protein so I don't have to put in supplements.

And they eat bugs in the wild, so what is wrong about giving them bugs? If they get a few meal worms and a couple crickets maybe once or twice a week, how is that different from what anybody else does as a "treat"?

Insects are not a protein source, they are more fat than protein. They should only be used as a treat.

Welcome zombiedustin! I was so confused at first. You will find a recomended diet that works for you and your gliders. I had to try 3 before finding a good fit. About the Gatorade...its definitely a no. But there is something called GLIDER-ade that some people use. Thats why I was so confused. As far as I can tell mine drink plenty of water. Without Gadorade or Glider-ade.(I tried Gliderade and my girls didnt care much about it)

You should be able to make your own conclusions on this.

Gatorade contains approximately:

94 percent water
6 percent high fructose corn syrup
Citric acid is used as a flavoring and acidifying agent
Natural Flavors
salt
sodium citrate
mono-potassium sulfate
modified food starch
red 40
glycerol ester of rosin to provide coloring
emulsifiers

Summary:

Salty sugar water with preservatives.

I just read that, and I have some issues with the information they provide. The dragging hind legs is not from a vitamin deficiency, it's from a calcium deficiency. They recommend corn, dried peas and deli turkey and ham: corn and peas are both very low in calcium and high in phosphorus, so not good things to feed very often; all deli meats are very salty and should not be fed at all. The seeds and almonds are high in fat and should be saved for treats. I didn't see Gatorade mentioned, but as Kazko said, don't do it.

I think at one time people thought to give gatorade to dehydrated sugar gliders because that is the same thing we take when we get dehydrated (such as from playing sports). And then the fact that it is 'fruit flavored' I guess made people think their suggies would love it. Though it does contain electrolytes, which are good for dehydration, it is super high in sugar and is already bad for us and especially bad for sugar gliders. Pedioloyte is what kids and babies are given and are approved (from what I know) for animals for dehydration. We gave it to our dog when she was really sick (bless her heart she died days later from an auto immune disease-her white blood cells attacked her red blood cells). Water is just fine for sugar gliders, and they actually drink very little because most of their liquid comes from the fruits/veggies they eat. Give pediolyte if a glider is dehydrated.

You need to understand that this is still supposed to be a BALANCED diet... and you need to ensure all the ingredients are Ca:Ph balanced with each other... if you can't get the ratio's right I suggest that you use something like BML or HPW... A diet like Kazko's is meant for advanced glider owners who can calculate the ratios with ease and know the pro's and con's of each diet. You CAN'T just through random stuff together and HOPE it all evens out.... That's how they end up with vitamin and mineral deficiencies...

As for gatorade, it's packed full of artificial crap and sugar, so I wouldn't.

Fruit and veggie recipes with the 2:1 ca:ph ratio already worked out. Gliders need twice as much calcium as phosphorous in order to not have health issues.
