My sugar glider has a very weird sleep schedule.
When I bought him he would wake up around 1-2am and run around all night until like 7am ish.
Slowly he would wake up later and later.. I literally had to get him out of his pouch at 3am so i could play with him, albeit sleepy, for a while before I had to go sleep. He wouldn't fully wake up until like 4-5... Then 6-7...

Now, he wakes up around 9-11am and stays awake until like 6pm running around in his wheel. (its never exactly the same. sometimes he wakes up a little earlier like 8 and sleeps around 4pm) Is he sleeping too much? or did he just become Diurnal on me? lol

he eats well,I feed the BML diet. Plays a lot.. he isnt bonded with me yet but im working on it. He doesnt crab at me and he lets me pet him. Although he tends to bite/nibble on my fingers a lot. I think its because he thinks i have food in my fingers.

What is your lighting situation?

Gliders will stay asleep, hidden in their pouches if there it too much light in the room. And it is pretty normal for them to get up, eat, play and go back to sleep and repeat many times a nite.

Your room should be lit during the day and dark at night. The daylight is their cue to go to bed.

I have my cages in the living room and I open up all my blinds every morning and turn lights off now around 11 or 12...they too were not getting up til 1,2 or 3 am. because there are lights on in the living room, dining room and hall ways.

So I have been shutting lights down earlier and feeding them earlier to try to change their schedule. I use a red light bulb in one of my lamps so I can watch them play...it doesn't bother them at all compared to regular white lights.

I guess that could be it.. lol
Im a college student so I stay awake in my room until like 3 or 4 and the lights are on until then. I cant really move it to the living room, but i can put covers on its cage if its necessary.. HOWEVER... if this schedule suits me better to play with him can i keep it?

I never thought you could trick them to change their waking hours this drastically but i guess its definitely possible.
I literally played with him for 3 hours today because he was awake in the afternoon lol

Some people have tried to adjust their schedules to diurnal but I feel it would be harmful to their long term health...that being said..it's your schedule and your glider. If your glider sticks with it...

I don't know if they were successful with that or not, but if you look at how "shift work" (second shift and especially over nite shifts) really can affect people...most can not do it forever it can really take a toll on their health.

I put covers on their cages when I go to bed, mostly to give them privacy from my cat and dogs, it keeps drafts out and contains some mess too.

From your post it sounds like you have a single glider?...maybe someone has suggested getting him a buddy? They are really much happier and need the companionship of their own kind for sleeping, playing and grooming when you can not be with him.

I kind of have that same problem too. Right now it's about 11:30 p.m. and I've got my lil Marcie sleeping in my hoodie. She'll keep running there to go back to sleep if I try to get her out to wake her up, and she'll continue doing that til around 1 a.m. Then I'll wake up and she'll be up and playing til about noon. It's not too bad right now, could be worse. I try to open the blinds in the morning so she'll go to sleep, but she'll still sleep in til like 1 to 3 a.m.

My suggie wakes up at 10:30pm or 11pm then rests during 3am then is awake all night til 8am. But she's usually in her pouch by morning just peeking outside. If her cute little face is nowhere to be seen then she's asleep already lol.

When I open the blinds in the morning and lift the cage covers for the day, I have little faces pop up in the pouch...they know they get a little "morning" snack before they go to bed for the day.

This is also good time to give them their mealies(every 3rd day or so) I don't give them any at night anymore...they would fill up on them and not eat their dinner. Silly kids!

well... it changed again.. yesterday he woke up at 6pm and stayed uo until like 11pm.
Today I actually got him off his pouch at 7pm. he is currently running around his wheel and grooming. I think he would have stayed longer had I not taken him out.

im getting a little concerned? I have not memorized his habits yet so I cant tell if this migth be signs of weird sickly behavior.

he is sleeping around the same amount. he does sleep alot though. He is usually awake for 6-7 hours maybe 8 on a good day.

He is just waking up at completely different times. I think a few more days and he'll do a complete clockwise cycle. He would wake up at 9 then 10 then 3am then 5am then 8am and so on.. right now we wakes up at 6-7pm. maybe tomorrow it will be 10.. who knows.. maybe he will reach a normal schedule and stay there.

Maybe I should turn on all the lights until like 7 or 8pm and krrp them on to keep my room bright then turn them all off so he wakes up?
or should I just let him do his thing? when he is active he is very play full. He eats almost all his food. runs around everywhere.

I would just try to get him on more of a routine. If you keep a different schedule even on weekends compared to weekdays it can throw them off sync.

My household has a lot of night owls so it's common for a lot of lights to be on but it was causing my gliders to sleep later and later. They are usually turned in by 7:30 am and I want them to have a longer period at night to eat their dinner...if they don't get up til 3 and go to bed at 7...that is not enough time to eat all of their food. I would leave their food in til I walked out the door for work just incase they would come back out to eat but they never do.

It's really more about getting to know your glider(s). In the last few days there have been some folks posting about their glider being diurnal and one that was checked even by a vet and it turned out they were just very sick and passed away.

If they are asleep and awake very randomly it makes it hard to tell if it's their "normal" because then they don't really have one...

I had that problem with my gliders, I work over night so the room would be dark during the day and all night except my nights off. So I put a light above there cage that is on an automatic timer. It comes on at 7 am and goes off at 7 pm. so that i have time to play with them before i go to work at 10 pm. They seem much happier now that they are on a set schedule and when i have nights off I try and keep the big light off and use a lamp so that I don't mess with their schedule.

My gliders live in a spare room. I keep the curtains open all day, door closed and lights off so they just have natural light. They wake up at 5pm every evening, sometimes awake from 4.30 but here its already going dark by 4pm. They do snooze on and off during the night but they are always still awake at 6am ish.

Nothing has particularly worked. I tried covering his cage to be completely dark at night, when I have my lights on and I even left the lights on in the morning so that the room would be very bright but he would still run around.

He already went around the clock 3 times. Right now he is waking up around 4am and sleeping around 3 or so pm. Everyday he wakes up a little later until he goes around it again.

He eats well, very active when he is active. At least from what Ive seen his normal to be. Im not sure if he was abnormal from the start though lol
