New owner of an 8 year old female Glider. Need help!!!!

I've looked at getting a Glider for a few years now just never went and got any. A friend of mine was over and had stated a friend of hers had one that she was looking to give to someone. I told her I would take it in. Her name is Fury and she is 8 years old. She has been feeding her "chicken flavored" baby food in the mornings, fruit yogurt in the evenings, with Vitakraft high protein formula in a bowl as well. Do I need to change her diet? All she had in her cage was a towel for her to corral in to sleep, a water bottle for a ferret, and a plain plast hamster wheel. What toys do they like the most? Going to get her a sleeping pouch this weekend. As well as, building her a new bigger cage that I found on this site of PVC pipe. Also she runs around in her cage a lot. Is this good? We have tried to let her out, she climbed around on us for a good bit, and loves crawling inside my Fiances hoodie and curling up. Should we handle her more with our hands and let her crawl around on us? Or keep her corralled up? I was told that she had two of them and the other one passed away. Do they mourn the loss of a friend? I am a brand new owner. Never had any before this one. I appreciate all the help. Thank you in advance.

I have learned from talking to the previous owner myself that she is about 4 1/2 years old. Thank you for the information. I want to learn about them and grow more knowledge so I can take better care of her and the ones to come. They're very unique creatures and that's what attracts me to them. Everyone has dogs and cats, but I know of no one that had a sugar glider, or chinchilla, or etc. I like the off the wall pets lol.. I appreciate the advice and I will follow the links provided and advice provided to help better care for her. Do you, at all, put your glider in a hamster ball and let them run around the house?

The diet can really be improved, pellets are not a good food source for gliders, their digestive system is not at all adapted to eat dry food. There are several widely used diets among which BML, HPW, Pricilla Price, LGRS. all the infos can be found in the gliderpedia here by searching the keyword "diet". Do not hesitate to read the forum extensively and ask questions ;)

Hello and welcome to the site. 1st thing, toss away the hamster wheel, those are dangerous and can hurt a glider. There are some good glider safe wheels on the market http://www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/index.asp?ExerciseWheels as for toys, mines love little plastic soldiers, monkeys from the barrel, anything they can grab and carry around, they like braided fleece too to climb and unbraid. Most of gliders do not like being handled, they are happier just jumping and crawling on you ;) And yes, gliders do mourn, especially if they end up alone, they are social animals afterall, and fare much better with a mate of their own kind ;) If you have further question, do not hesitate to use the forum (glider gossip on top of the page) to post them, they usually get answered quicker than here in the personal journals ;)
