And the power bill is in!

Posted by: kazko
-----
We paid 12.5 cents per kwh this month and probably consumed much more than the average home although down here in Texas many homes have two central (zoned) air conditioners and they arent very efficient homes. Many folks are seeing power bills of $700 on up and they are paying up to .25 a kwh on their new "money saving" energy plans.

I am also very happy to announce that my energy saving efforts have paid off greatly. This was the hottest month of the year and the bill is always the most. By following the trending in my spreadsheet, this month was guestimated to be around 5173 kwh consumed and it ended up being 3357. This bill was $120 cheaper than last months and I expected it to be $80 more. So I calculate that we saved around $200 this month by my simple efforts alone. I have turned off equipment that we dont really need. All computers are in S3 sleep mode now including my TV pc. I have a more efficient air conditioner in the server room. We dont run ceiling fans all day anymore unless the room is occupied. We turn off tv's when leaving house or not in room... These things mentioned prolly saved an average of 100 watts per hour each.

Using my portable wattmeter and the whole house meter I have been able to slow down our energy usage and keep tabs on it.

I never thought Id be excited over a $419.53 energy bill, but I expected $620.

My goal is to keep chopping that down moving forward. Radiant barrier and insulation will help some. Sealing the house better will help some. A new HVAC system should help some. Earning more money on my websites will help a lot. And then some day Id like to have solar and wind systems helping a lot. Hopefully we will see a day where our city, state and fed govt all work together to help fund these renewable energy initiatives. Right now the city of Austin will pay for more than 50% of your solar system and you can also get a $2000 rebate on your taxes from the fed. That would be a nice business to be in down there right now. I hope to see this in Dallas some day.

I should probably get certified as a solar and wind installer and general electrician.

 Will cruelty ever cease!

I just would like to share this story about a glider that had been rescued, an is now trying to find a good home to re-home in my state. I'm trying my hardest to get this poor little thing, I've had a friend e-mail this lady Then e-mailed me with the posting for the ad.

I warn everyone now, this is about the worst that I have read so far. My boyfriend just dropped his jaw when I read it out loud. An he truly does not have a liking for my little critters.

I have a very special little glider for adoption. This girl came to me in a plastic critter keeper, she was being housed in sawdust bedding that looked like it hadn't been changed in weeks (months?), the bottom of it was black with urine and fecal matter and possibly what may have been mold. All that was in there was a urine soaked pouch with chew holes in it and some cat food and mixed seeds. She had an eye infection that was SO BAD her eye had swollen up almost the size of her little head. She had also chewed half of her tail off. Her fur was matted with fecal matter and stained orange with urine. After almost a year of vet work and rehabilitation I believe she's ready to be adopted out into a home that has another glider she can go with and more one on one time to spend with her. She's a sweet glider, not too crabby, but doesn't like to be physically picked up or grabbed (as most gliders.) We have named her Chance.

Chance still has thin hair on her tail, but after it being so badly infected I didn't expect it to all grow back right away, these things take time. She has no use of her right eye but gets along fine and has adapted to not using it. She's pretty healthy right now, ofcourse with her previouse diet you never know what kind of issues may arise from that as she gets older. She's been on BML with fruits/veggies meal worms and organic goatmild yogurt with live cultures here for the past 10 months. If you think you could provide a loving home for this VERY SPECIAL little girl please get ahold of me! She's been through alot and I would keep her if I could but right now it's not fair for her as I don't have any other gliders for her to go with and I don't have enough time to devote to her.

 Kentucky sugar glider rescue

Posted by: foreverfreeplay
-----
I have started a rescue for suggies.
I am located in kentucky.
I have heard so many reasons and excuses as to why people have had to give up their gliders.I am not here to judge anyone.I understand that life happens. We will rescue the gliders with no questions asked as to why someone needs to relinquish their glider(s).Once the glider reaches us we will make sure that the glider(s) are vetted and then we work on finding their forever home.We will not buy gliders. We do not breed Gliders.Just simply rehome them to a family who has been checked out. Also we do follow ups on the family to see how the glider is doing in its new home.Feel free to email me here for more information.

 Phil's Necropsy

Posted by: kazko
-----
Well it looks like Jennifer did the necropsy yesterday and came to some conclusions.

quote:

I did go ahead and do the necropsy yesterday, and I found multiple nodules in his lungs, and a very enlarged, pale liver. It appears he had metastatic lung cancer, meaning cancer from somewhere else had invaded his lungs. I'm thinking maybe from the nodules in his skin or by his mouth? I didn't see any signs of problems in any of his other organs. Probably the liver failure was because he hadn't been eating (hepatic lipidosis or "fatty liver disease"). It does mean, though, that there was nothing you or I could have done to save him. I'm sorry for your loss, but know you did everything you could for him.

~Jenny

Rest in peace Mr Phil Philander Opossum.

 Phil died today

Posted by: kazko
-----
Phil died today at around 9:30am in the vets hands. He had not been eating since surgery and I cant even be sure that he was swallowing his meds as he was such a stubborn creature. She took his exhausted panting body away to draw some blood from his neck. Apparently his heart stopped during that procedure and she couldnt revive him and he was brought back to me dead.

I am sure it's the same for everyone, but it seems so surreal seeing this once hyper hissing flighty nippy animal lying there, still, limp, eyes open. I am sad for him as I did not want him to end this way. I was happy to put up with his odd temperament in order to see him become a daddy. His offspring would have been the tame kept animals I was wanting.

I left him with Jennifer so she could do a necropsy to determine what may have went wrong, what we can learn from it and if it is any threat to Robin, my sugars or even me.

We have our gliders now.
The male is really outgoing and the females a little skiddish.
Hopefully she'll warm up to us.
During tent time she was jumping all over the place.
I have them right now in the pouch, I'm trying to bond with them as much as I can so maybe she'll stop being so crazy lol.
They have a baby too, it's a little boy.
He's so cute and small. I havnt played with him yet because I'm afraid the female will reject him if I do.

 Possums make it through surgery

Posted by: kazko
-----
Phil and Robin both did well today in surgery. Jennifer removed two mammary tumors in Robin and Phil lost around 9 teeth. He had rotten roots and rather inflamed areas. He must have been in some severe pain.

Phil is up and drinking water. He will get liquids and soft foods tonight and for a few days. Robin should be able to eat normally on her own and I just need to keep an eye on her pouch.

Jennifer was able to get a sample from Phil and she did inject into Robin. Would we be so lucky to get something from it. But if not, I now have a method and supplies to try myself.

 Both Possums back to surgery...

Posted by: kazko

Phil has been acting different for a few days so I decided to take him to the vet. He has not been eating anything except for his yogurt. He has been still and weak and not his normal hyper self. I also felt what appeared to be a few tick like bumps on him.

I took Robin as well for a basic checkup since I knew my vet would want to see her anyway, but she has been doing great lately.

Turns out that the bumps on Phil were just dirt and stuff that I couldnt easily investigate while holding him still by myself. Inspecting his teeth, Phil appears to have a number of dental issues including his original broken jaw area but also not limited to that. I think Phil has attacked the side of the cage a few times and has probably broken more teeth or hurt his gums or such, so he has a few noticeable issues. I believe the mouth pain has kept him from eating anything and thusly he has been losing strength and appearing sickly. So he'll be in tomorrow for dental surgery and removal of a number of dead teeth and she'll do a more exhaustive inspection on him then as well to look for any other issues.

Robin get a big hello from Jennifer as she inspected the original chest surgery area. I decided to hold Robin upside down for inspection and suddenly out of her pouch popped a large thing I had never seen before. Turns out that she has been hiding a couple of mammary tumors in her pouch, one being rather huge. I had felt something solid in her pouch before but having little experience with these animals I paid no attention to it thinking it was a normal part of something down there. So it is my fault for not catching this issue sooner. Opossums should have nothing hard or bony anywhere in or near their belly or pouch area.

So, she is also going to surgery tomorrow with Phil. Since Jennifer will have both animals sedated, if possible at the time, she may try to collect a sample from Phil and use it to attempt an insemination of Robin for me. That is low priority of course but naturally I hope it happens and that it works.

Hopefully Robin will retain at least 3 of her 5 nipples intact after her surgery tomorrow.

UPDATE:

I wanted to get a photo of Robin's tumor this afternoon so I got her out and immediately found that she has been bleeding. I dont know if she has suddenly decided to groom her tumor or if it has suddenly burst, but this is just super odd timing as I wasnt even taking her to the vet this morning, it was Phil. I guess it will be taken care of in the morning, but I did not expect the thing to be all bloody all of a sudden.

 The great escape!

Everyone warns you that one day your glider will slip out of his/her cage - and that you should have your house well secured at all times for the eventuality. Well, the inevitable happened, and no I wasn't prepared. Lucky for me, tragedy in this case did not strike times two.

I cleaned their cage the day before, and didn't double check the doors (3). Well, one of the access doors near the top of their cage must have been loose, or open (Opps!), and they got out during the night.

Early morning, I heard the music box in the guest bathroom downstairs going off - it's activated by motion. Instead of sending my husband down to see if we had an intruder - I put my robe on to investigate.

I found Tinkerbell climbing up the shower curtain. This is the bathroom I usually play with them in, so maybe she just returned to it for more fun. Fortunately for me, she didn't fall in the open toilet bowl. I haven't been able to train my husband to close the lid!!

So, after getting her back in the cage, I went in search of Peter Pan. I checked out the laundry room, which is where the cage is, no luck. I turned back to the den, and whom should I find merrily hopping up and down on the carpet without a care - but Peter Pan - and two feet away from him, my sweet kitty was checking him out, no doubt wondering why he was out and about. Fortunately, I had fed her that night, and lord knows why she didn't think he was a fun new plaything for her to bat about - but she just was watching while I scooped him up and put him back where he belonged.

I was soooo fortunate. I felt like I didn't deserve such luck, but I knew then, that even sugar babies have a guardian angel, or two. You can bet, from now on, before I go to bed, I double check their doors, close the toilet lid, and feed the cat!

 They love it soooo much....

My sugar babies - Tinkerbell & Peter Pan love cantelope so much, that when I stick the rinds up on top of their cage, they will work them down to the floor of the cage, and sometimes pull them into their pouch!

Something weird though, whenever I feed them sweet pototoes/yams - their poop turns orange! Weird.

 Squirt :D

Posted by: LarryOutOfControl

Squirt is my Sugar Glider. He is AMAZING. He is nice, and he is active, but something is different. The days he lived here, he barked, and now, almost a year later, he doesnt. Only when im gone. I know that he is looking for me, because he is used to me being, literally RIGHT THERE, but does anyone know if it affects him mentally if im not there all of the time? I dont think it will, but i just want to be sure. :D
