What kinds of things do you need to know? Diet, housing, bonding, anything like that?

Did the person you get your suggie from give you any idea of what kind of diet they were on before? (BML diet, Priscilla's, Zookeepers, any of those, none of those?) Whichever diet was given before--unless the answer is "no diet plan"--should be continued by you. There's a HUGE debate by many as to which one is BEST...the BEST diet is one you select AND STICK TO FAITHFULLY.

As far as bonding, there is a WONDERFUL narrative written by a lady on another glider board (which is DOWN RIGHT NOW) on bonding techniques. I can try to find it & link you to it...but it's written almost from a glider's point of view. It covers everything from first meetings to playtime to biting & how to handle it all. Let me go see if I can find it & link you up.

Bourbon has been involved with suggies for 20+ years now, she's a wonderful no-bones individual who will share her knowledge with you & let you decide whether or not you want to take her advice. Some people don't share the same love & respect for her as others...I've had the honor of calling her a friend for 2 years & have learned A LOT from her in that timeframe.

Happy researching!

Thanks. When do you think I should first handle my gliders.

I have to dispute this statement, Bourben will not share her knowledge with people. I had a long running post asking Bourben information on her diet and she would not answer me about the background to her diet but pussy footed around the questions.

So I will put it out there that there are some great people on this forum who are very knowledgeable and have there gliders on fantastic diets and would love to share that information with you. The gliderpedia is a great place to start and don't forget the chat room is usually very helpful.

With all due respect:

Baybe (Bourbon's very special suggie) lived to the ripe old age of 13. She came OOP while Bourbon had her mom (can't remember Baybe's mom's name right now) whom Bourbon had for some time prior. So that puts the numbers CLOSER to 15, not 10.

About the diet information: I myself asked Bourbon about the research paperwork regarding her diet formula. She told me (to great lengths) how she worked with an Austrailian nutritionist and obtained "comparable" ingredients that could be purchased by ANYONE here in the US. Not unlike many of us (I'm including myself in this statement), all the documentation concerning this research is "in a box somewhere". Someday, that box will be found and the information will be disclosed.

And I am in complete agreement that there are MANY people out in cyberspace who have a great wealth of knowledge about suggies--diets, behaviors, experiences, whatever--and I am very grateful that they ARE willing to share what they know with people who wish to learn. They are angels in my opinion.

Whilst this is not the thread to start this sort of thing, there does need to be some comments made.

1. In August 1998, when asked in a thread about how long had other posters had owned gliders, Bourbon replied that she had owned gliders about a year and that Babye (her first) was approx 1 1/2 years OOP in August 1998. This would make Babye born very early in 1997 and that Bourbon had gotten her approx 6 months OOP.

2. In the same thread in August 1998, BetsyCC (a friend of Bourbon's) said she had gliders for 1 1/2 years and that her friend Bourbon had joked to her about Betsy's high priced hamsters. This confirms the time frames and that there was no error on Bourbon's part when she posted.

What does this all mean? Bourbon's first glider was Babye and that she passed just reaching ten years of age not 13.

As for diets, this is what Bourbon (in her own words) was feeding her gliders in June 1998.

Well it sounds like you are on your way... the best thing any of us can tell you is try anything and everything that is healthy, No additives, No presevatives, No salt, No Fat, No refined sugar, No cheese.People ask me what my gliders eat, I tell them everything that we should but most of us don't. take a walk through the produce section of your local food store, pick a pinch of everything and bag it up (except fruits and those choose 1 of everything) you will find some things there that will suit his fancy, you will also notice as with babies sometimes they don't want something other times they will. Don't rule out anything. My Baybe loves canalope, our Smokey Loves grapes. Both love live insects, and mealworms. but be sure to keep those to a minimum due to the fact they are high in protien and very fattening. They love corn and peas fresh or frozen (not thawed), raisins, carrots, apples, star fruit, kiwi, fresh green beans, tomatos, watermellon, scrambled egg, overcooked rice, banana pudding (fat free) and only a litle bit. try to offer a pinky nail size of each thing as a variety and let him choose. remember he may not want it one day and then turn around and eat it up the next..

As for the first modified leadbeaters, Ruth Rogers appears to have been the one to start them adding wheatgerm and apple juice (instead of water). Not sure of the date she started (still looking into that)but people were posting her diet (Bourbon included) in July of 1998. With a short time, other people had posted versions with very slight additions including Betsycc and Bourbon.

Just a little background history which was researched when told by Bourbon to research things myself if I wanted any diet history. I have found this and a whole lot more but again this isn't the thread to go any further on this.
