She has runny poop. Should it be like that or more like a hamsters. What will help with that?
zoeysmom Glider CO, USA 87 Posts I just got her last night. I feed a 1/4 apple & glider grub. Thats what he said to feed them. I am trying to get a shopping list of food to go get. She came from pocket pets/cageworks. Now I relize that they don't care for them very well. What is all good for them to eat? G ive her some scrambled egg - just egg, no salt, pepper, milk or oil. Or you can boil an egg. Or get a boneless - skinless chicken breast and bake it, Here is a recipe: [ b]Suggie chicken bake packs
1: Take one boneless, skinless chicken breast
2: Cut in 2 big strips, wash well, rub with "flavor" (flavor = dried green leafy herb, i.e. rosemary), make sure plenty herb sticks on too, as you can count on about 60% of it falling off by the time it gets to the suggies food bowl.
3: Place on a 8x8 sheet of aluminum foil, pack in any veggies you plan to serve with it around and between the chicken strips.
4: Wrap closed like a burrito with one end open, sprinkle in about 1 tsp water and seal the open end. 5: Bake at 350 for about 20 - 30 minutes, always open one pack and cut thickest part of chicken to check it is not pink, however slightly rosy is okay IF you plan to microwave leftover to thaw it (since this cooks it more). 6: Once it is at room temp, serve some (about 1.5 square inches worth of chicken per suggie cut in smaller cubes to start, add more if you actully have small furry pigs, take some out if you have small furry super models)[/i] Also get her some fresh fruit like melons. Walmart has small packages of precut fresh fruit that has 3 different kinds of melons. It should last her all week. Give her one tablespoon each night. Also offer her the fruit as treats.
Get a bag of frozen vegetables that has green beans, corn, peas and carrots. (no lima beans) Give her one tablespoon each night. I always put a couple of drops of water in the veggies and put them in the microwave for about 30 - 40 seconds. This will get you started on giving her something more nutritious to eat. We can go into diet in more depth later. Did you do the "tent" test on her???
You can give her a piece of two of Old Fashioned Oatmeal (NOT instant) - this may help her with her runny poo.
If she is dehydrated - PLEASE let us know asap. There are things you need to do right away to help her. Her stool should be like hard little pellets. A good diet should at least be 25% fruits, 25% veggies and 50% proteins daily. The Glider Grub can be left in the cage as a staple food, but I hate that they give you a year's worth. Seems unhealthy to keep food sitting that long, I don't know... Anyway to get an idea of fruits, mine like papaya, mango, apples, cherries, grapes, peaches, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, blueberries, etc.. For veggies, mine eat peas, carrots, green beas, corn (you can get the frozen mix at the store), spinach, sweet potato, cucumber. Protein can be cooked egg, chicken, tofu, yogurt, cottage cheese, beef, turkey. For the meats, I personally use baby food form. No onion or garlic. When I cook egg, I put spinach in it too. Make sure she has access to clean, fresh water at all times and if you're using a water bottle, check daily to make sure it isn't clogged. zoeysmom Glider CO, USA 87 Posts she is not dehydrated.I just checked. so what are some good foods? Fruits, you can give things as honeydew, cantelope(sp), papaya, peach, etc. Also make sure to look into some diets such as BML diet, HPW diet... zoeysmom Glider CO, USA 87 Posts Well we went & got some of the prepared mixed fruit that Rita suggested, some frozen veg. & baby food like chicken, turkey, sweet potatoes & peas. Yougut & juice. Can they have pinapple? That was in the prepared mix fruit. Also can they have applesauce or bananas? I only bought the package for $375 that included the cage, heat rock(that is pointless), a small thing of glider grub & vita- glider, water bottle & two food bowls, his useless cd & a book. scienceteacher1217 Starting Member USA 8 Posts Runny stool is not unusual for a glider who just moved to a new home. Stress is a big contributor of health problems in gliders, as is dehydration. Start on the BML diet and her stool should harden up. It will take some time because she is still adjusting to her new surroundings as well as her new food. She needs a fecal check anyway, whether she had runny stool or not. All gliders should have a vet check up once a year, just like any other animal. Find a vet in your area who deals with gliders on a regular basis and knows a lot about them. Not every vet deals with exotic animals, so do some investigating before you pick one. Until you find a reputable vet, pedialyte is a good idea to restore fluids and electrolytes in her body. Ensure (vanilla, strawberry or butter pecan) will also help, as will it provide her extra protein. zoeysmom Glider CO, USA 87 Posts So we have been giving her water mixed with a few drops of pear juice in a medicine syringe & feeding her & she drinks it well. I will keep you all updated Also make sure you get another water source either a bottle or another bowl. Just in case one malfunctions. zoeysmom Glider CO, USA 87 Posts Yes she has a water bottle too. She is acting fine. Even kind of more trusting already. Her ears are perky & we did the tent test again & shes ok. Good!! It is amazing what a proper diet can do.
