Does anyone know how to keep those nasty little annoying things away from thier cage? I have heard to sprinkle a little bit of cedar. But I have also heard keep the cedar away. So any ideas?

I wouldn't recommend the cedar. The only thing that worked for me was washing the cage more frequently, and also containing the mess from dinner. Clean up old food the next morning, or make a glider kitchen.

There are other things that have worked for other people, so we'll have to see what everyone else posts. :)

You can also use apple cider vinegar. Mix some with water and put it in a bowl or a soda bottle, then add a drop of dish soap. The soap breaks the surface tension of the liquid, and the fruit flies will drown.

If you have fruit flies coming to the fruit as soon as you put it in the cage, you need to eliminate any place they could be breeding.

Always remove any fruit dropped in the pan under the glider cage every morning.

Do not let scraps of fruit stay in a kitchen disposal - run it and rinse the drain well with hot water.

Do not leave fruit peel, leftovers from the glider plates or other fruit scraps in a garbage can in the house! Take it outside to a covered garbage can.

If you are careful about taking the glider plates out of the cage each morning and making sure there are no scraps of fruit anywhere for the fruit flies to breed they should be gone pretty quickly.

I use a bit of vanilla in the a corner of the cage in the pop trap so that they can't get to it(on the fabric in the pop trap)
