My sugar glider has been eating his own feces. He's been doing this for a while now and it's starting to really worry me. My vet didn't act super concerned, but I am. Has anyone else had this problem or know what I would do? He's getting a great diet; BML, veggies, fruit, meal worms. I don't know what else I could do. Please help!

That's usually a sign of malnutrition. Maybe even if he is being served a good meal, he is not eating it well. Maybe a new diet would help

What diet should I switch to? I thought BML was the best. Plus he gets veggies and fruit and meal worms.

My girls will sometimes put their feces in their mouth and then spit it right back out. O_o

He actually eats it. I'm worried that he is malnourished but I feed him so well, I don't know how he could be. He's done this for quite some time now and today he bit me over me taking it away from him. He didn't bring blood but I obviously pissed him off. Ugh!

You could even be over feeding the critter. Too much food could lead to rich poop and the interest in eating constantly. I have am old glutton female and it is very hard to manage her intake in a cage with others. And the bigger she gets, probably the more diabetic she gets, so the more she eats to compensate. It is a spiraling effect that leads to glutton death.

He could also have failing organs which leads to malnourishment no matter how well he is fed. Most animals will seek nourishment anywhere they can get it when things are awry. Poop eating in general suggests some disorder somewhere.

If he is alone, I'll bet the problem is mental/behavioral. You would probably see a marked improvement in him with a cage buddy, preferably an older adult / rescue, or two, or three...

If he bit you with his poop teeth, you have just been tattooed with fecal bacteria and a barrage of other scary items. I recommend an immediate scouring, anti bacterial cleaning and antibac ointment. The human body can most always deal with this kind of thing, but all it takes is that one time that it cant. Ed can share his story with you on that matter...

Thank you so much Kazko. Ugh! I am a nervous wreck now. I would die if something happened to him. He has 2 friends but they aren't in a cage together yet. We are doing the quarantine and introducing thing.

I just cut back on what I am feeding him, because he wasn't eating everything. He's been doing this feces thing before that though. I pray it's not his organs shutting down, I would die!

I'm a nurse so everything got sterilized and neosporined! I'm all about cleanliness.
