clipping hind nails?
clipping hind nails?

It was once again time to clip our girls nails even though it wasn't quite a month. We could see as they were running around on the towels in the bathroom that their hind feet in particular were catching on the towels.

Normally we only clip the front nails, but since they were catching, we did the hind ones also. Because it has probably been at least 4 months since they were last cut, the nails on the hind feet were very long.

Could it cause a problem to cut all the nails on the hind feet? We did today because they were so long. But last time we cut the nails on the hind feet, we only cut the last two (the longest ones anyway). But they did seem a bit insecure when I first took them out tonight, but by the end of the playtime, they were moving around much better.

My question is this: when cutting the nails on the hind feet, should we only clip a couple/which ones? And what if the other ones are extremely long (like today)?

I only cut the two main ones on the back feet, leaving the fused grooming nails alone. Those grooming nails can get very sharp looking but I haven't noticed them getting caught on anything, they're a bit softer and have a bit more "give" to them. If you trim those they might not be able to groom as well for a bit.

I do notice my gliders seem a bit clumsy the day I trim all the nails but they adjust to the new length quickly.

And would the two main ones be the first ones or the inside ones?

What about the others if they are extremely sharp? Do you just leave them?
Our girls had extremely long nails on all their rear nails.

Sorry, I am terrible at explaining sometimes! I only clip the two that look like regular claws (the two outer ones).

The ones I don't clip are the two fused/grooming nails, those are the two that are closest to the nail-less "thumb". So, if you were to count the toes starting at the thumb on the hind foot, the fused grooming nails would be 2 & 3. Those can look really sharp but since they use them as a "comb" I don't trim them. I haven't noticed those ones getting caught on any fleece in my cage, regardless of their length. The nails on toes 4 & 5 get trimmed every 2-3 weeks in my house. Hope that helps!
