Ok...I have a mommy and daddy. They have had one set of twins about a year ago that were perfect and just had another set of baby joey's. They are fed very well. They get glider food at all times and I also give them live mealworms fresh fruits and vegetables and yogurt every single night. The babies are 1 week old and I have not handled them yet only looked at them. Tonight I checked on them. Mommy was not in pouch and daddy was with both babies. One was holding on to him and he was eating the other one. I don"t now why but I need some info. I took live joey away from him and put him on mommy. I took daddy out of cage and into a small cage. Is this the right thing to do? Please help...what do I do? I am devastated

some animals eat thier young becasue there is something wrong with the babies and they know they wont survive so they take them early to not waste food for the other babies if you want the baby to stay alive the best thing to do is to remove the dad from the cage like you did and sometimes certain animal dads eat the babies just because thats how some species are but for sugar gliders its usually because something is wrong with the baby if that is the case then the dad wont eat the other one unless something is wrong with it to

It is VITAL that daddy is with mommy and baby/ies.
I would put him back with mommy and the other baby. Parents eat their young when something is wrong with them, even if it's not something a person can see.
Please put daddy back. It's important that he is with the mommy and the baby.

I agree. It is not best to remove dad. If the parents reject a joey, they have a reason. If the other one gets rejected as well and does not get injured, you may have to hand raise that one on your own.

Thank you for your responses. I put daddy back with mommy and baby. The joey is inside mommy's pouch right now. I hope that the joey will be ok. They both took very good care of the last joey's so i am assuming that they did this for natural instinct of defect. I am sad but I know stuff like this happens. Thans again...

Please read that website and get the supplies because it looks like you might very well have to handraise the survivor.

Also, just reread your original post. You said glider food at all times. Are you talking about pellet food?
If so, check out the recourses tab for better diets. =)

So called glider pellets are very very bad. In fact, if that is what you are primarily feeding, then there is also the good possibility that the baby might have been eaten because the parents are malnourished. Please take the time to research better diets. HPW is what I feed. There are plenty of threads on here in relation to it. You feed it along with a selection of fruits and veggies that are high in calcium, because calcium is something else these guys need. Especially since you have a breeding pair. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. There are plenty of people here on this forum - myself included - who will gladly help you in any way we can.

Welcome to the board... I just wish it was under better circumstances.
