Is it safe to use Hartz Nodor Bedding spray on my sugar gliders bedding? It says safe for all small animals and non-toxic, but just checking first to make sure.

From the year or so before finally getting my glider this past week I would say no, Gliders from what I know are very Smell intensive creatures, while it may work for you and your nose, my concern would be that you are de smelling your gliders environment an what your glider deems as theirs. Also anything that deodorize's your glider's habitat runs a risk of damaging both his nose and sense of safety. if it was a matter of putting deodorant under your own arms I would say it would be safe.

If your looking for something to cut down the smell of a cage (I'm new to the actual experience of owning a glider, but have studied) I would suggest linen mist. most that you find is made from either flowers and water or from a fruit and water, Febreeze works too for a room but please make sure you spray it NO WHERE NEAR your kids cage, but it has it's draw backs, it again limits the smells your glider can pick up, and could potentially if your bonding make it harder because your smell is covered by febreeze.

Like I said I'm new to owning a suggie, so I could be wrong, but I hope it helps you somewhat, try the linen water first though because 1. you can make it yourself if need be, and 2. it's the safest approach. Other alternatives have chemicals that neither you nor I can pronounce.

If someone knows of a safe all natural product though, then by all means try that afterward

It is safe for certain. There is not really an odor to it so you can't expect complete elimination of glider smells, which is good for the gliders, but it does "freshen" and neutralize urine odors. I also use OdoBan to freshen the areas of the house near the cage but not in the cage itself. I think most glider owners are used to their glider smells and don't mind them since they love their babies so much :)

Another thing that my breeder taught me is not to overclean their cage (I was wiping it every day) and not to clean everything at once. Overcleaning it will make them mark it more, even neutered males. She said to change the bedding and their pouch every 3 weeks (and use good absorbent bedding) and not change everything at once. So far this has worked great for us.

Diet makes a difference too. If they are on a good glider diet, they will smell less (I use HPW instant, exotic nutrition pellets and add fresh fruits, veggies, and treats such as yogurt drops, papaya treats, mealworms - my boys love this diet, are healthy, look great and don't smell bad). There are different diets that are good so research it and see what will work best for you and your babies.

I boil Eucalyptus leaves that have gone crunchie. Drain off the "tea" and dilute it in a spray bottle with some water and WhaLah! A nice misty, spritz of Euc. water to freashen the cage and bedding.

I think people do forget that if you overclean (like mentioned above) or start adding foreign smells, you will probably have a worse odor issue on your hands. If you have unneutered males, neuter them. You will be amazed at the difference.

i never thought about that whole "don't clean everything at once" thing...now I feel stupid because I just did that and I've been doing that since I've gotten them a year ago :( and to be on the safe side I'm going to refrain from using the spray. Thanks for all the input!!!

Yep I clean one or two things.. wait a couple days.. and clean something else in the cage.. it keeps the smell down because they don't over scent.

Neither of my males are fixed yet and I don't think they smell at all. They have both scented me and their cages and it doesn't stink to me. I just smell them.

It could be that your so use to it (because you live with them) that you don't notice the smell.. or they could be non smelly :p lol

Don't feel stupid just because you're unaware of something, your'e not the only one. I did the same thing the first couple of times, cleaned everything. I put my girls in their carrier and washed all fleece & bedding, plastic toys, and wiped down entire cage with vinegar/water solution. Then I read how it's best not to wash everything at once, which just happened to be on the day I just did it for the second time, lol.

Now I wipe down sections of the cage, and clean a couple of their accessories each week, as for poop tray I do use newspaper (to absorb urine), I change that out & wipe down tray weekly. I'm considering making a couple of fleece liners for poop tray, that can be washed & reused, but for right now sticking with paper, they pretty much leave it alone and I'm not sure if they would try to play with the fleece. I don't use any "odor eliminating" spray after cleaning or in between, but I don't think my girls are that stinky, lol. I do notice a little gradual odor change though between clean days, but it's not that bad.
