Recently a local glider friend contacted me about rehoming his final newly single surviving glider Boomer, who is 13 yrs old. I wasn't sure if I could take him but I knew this couldn't be a normal rehome. He had to go somewhere secure where he wouldn't be rehomed again.

So it was either me, or Courtney another local that would take him in. It ended up being me, fortunately my bestie has a sweet spot for elder gliders so I knew if I needed advice I'd have it. I wasn't really sure what to expect, the oldest glider I've had was about 8 ish as far as we know.

When he arrived he wasn't in a pouch or bonding bag or anything, just hanging out on his dad. He came right to me n stayed on me, no fear, no anxiety, no nervousness nothin..... just ok hi!

We were outside for all that....... This glider is the MOST domesticated glider and socialized glider I have ever met! There has been 0 crabbing. No waiting a few days to handle him, in fact he craves the attention loves being held and petted and rather not be in a bag a lone. If he even goes in a pouch my hand had to be in there with him.

He has spent his entire life with his Dad and family and
it was a hard choice to let him go but dad knew Boomer needed new glider friends. Boomer has some severe over grooming on the back of his head and neck about the size of a 50 cent piece and noticeably lonely, reaally lonely.

So we let him settle in for a few days, and every morning I'd get up make coffee and spend the day holding Boomer as he slept. I really loved the time with him and wanted to be selfish for a few more days but this morning it just broke my heart how much he needed my hand in there with him, if I move it he wakes up and won't settle again til my hand is in there.

So this afternoon I did a cold intro with a colony of 4. It's only been a couple hours but he has so far been accepted with no issues what so ever.

Many times it's been asked what is better joeys or older gliders..... You never know which will be easier.

Joeys can be difficult, older gliders can be difficult, joeys can be super easy, older gliders can be super easy.

Don't over look an older rehome thinking they will be to much work, or will never bond... they can be the most affectionate, socialized gliders you'll ever meet. They are alwayssss able to bond with a new person, I don't care how old they are! In fact,a glider 10 or up I think bond easier from what I have seen with Boomer and my besties elder gliders. Don't let age steer you away or be the deciding factor, it's a sure way to miss out on some amazing gliders.

Congrats on your new addition! He sounds so sweet, and it is wonderful that your colony is accepting him. It always warms my heart when someone takes in an older glider, or a rescue. I hope someday I am experienced enough to attempt that. A lot of gliders out there need new, loving homes.

ptamom they truly can be! sometimes it can take a little work but once you break passed the fears its an amazingly deep bond.

The cold intro was a success! Their first night was completely uneventful!

This morning when I went out to make coffee Boomer was eating, the girls came out for treats then went back to the pouch... a few minutes later Boomer did one last loop around the cage and went in the pouch with the others.

Boomer hasn't wanted to be in a pouch since he got here so that is huge!! He also didn't even look twice at me this morning which was bitter sweet He chose his new clan over me!

I can't wait to see if his bald spot clears up now, but if not it is still clearly visible he is happier and accepted the way he is.
