 New Cage

Posted by: SugieHoney22
-----
So I finally got my PVC cage together. It's awesome! I love it! The girls Love It! Best decision I've made. The cage my girls were in before was way to small for three gliders! I don't know how the owner before me was able to leave them in that thing. It sat on the floor and didn't give the girls much of a view except for under my kitchen table. The PVC cage I built is 5 ft X 2 ft X 3 ft. After I got the toys moved over it looked so empty. My next mission is make some toys for my girls. I did throw together a corner hammock and a braided vine that runs across the cage. If anyone has any Ideas I'm open to them. I'll post pictures tonight and I hope to hear back from someone!

Hi have now had Dobu for about a month now. He was 9 weeks when I got him.
Read some really scary things on the internet about who and what not to believe.Did purchase him from a licensed breeder though said I could contact them day or night. He's a screamer though every time u get near the little stinker he crabs then he slows down to this adorable little noise like he's talking behind your back it's so cute.I gave him about 3 weeks in my daughters room I have 2 dogs that bark a lot so I wanted him to get use to us a little before I moved him into the living room.Have to time his time out to eat cause one of the dogs does nothing but bark at him while he tries to eat.The funny thing is my son has a beauitful blue pit that is actually scared of him.I was sitting on the couch with him one night in his pouch and he was crabbing the pit heard him a little later I called him and he went completely around me and Dobu, it was so funny to see that big dog so scared of something so little.I am sad to say I have only one they are pricy little fellows but i give as much attentention to him as I can.The breader gave me some food, not pellets but said this should last him a year, gave some vitamins to put in the food and seeds and treats. He doesn't like green beans, peas, banannas.I sure could use a little info on portions size for just one suggie. And I also use the little blanky with my smell on it to get him out of his cage, it helps alot that way.He still crabs though, he's a crabber LOL

 first time owner

Our sugar gliders, Mickey and Minni, got their first opportunity out of the cage tonight. I would like some advice on how much time to spend in a bonding pouch, FIRST TIME they come out of the cage. I did not go to other sites to read up on this seeing as this is the best sugar glider friendly site I have come across. I was only able to get one of the sugar gliders out, and when I attempted to get the other one to have a little bonding time, both of them went into their little pouch we have in their cage. Whenever possible, we are going to get a Gengi tent to do some real bonding. When my fiance went in his parents' room to show that he had the sugar glider in it, the dog came out to see what was going on. The sugar glider and pouch were well out of reach before anyone gangs up on me, lol. Finally, my fiance settled down sitting and the sugar glider, which I believe was Mickey, and I placed him back in the cage(putting the pouch in before I unzipped it). It surprised me when I first opened the pouch and he stayed peeking out for about a minute. If anyone can give me advice about whether or not to put them in the ball tomorrow night(for my fiance's knowledge). Also for some bonding advice on do(s) and don't(s) for the next couple of days, weeks, months even. Thank you for listening, and I am up to criticism, just not about the dog, I already know about that and cannot control the mind of my fiance(lol.

Stealth wheel gets a new bearing

Posted by: kazko
-----
My stealth wheel is somewhere over a year old and has gotten a lot of use between my three cages. The plastic bearing has been going out and it has just gotten worse and worse. So I decided to fix it any way that I could muster.

The best thing I was able to find to replace the bearing was a 3" garage door pulley from the home store.

I removed the wheel from the stand and then used a small nail to tap out the one way quick screws that secure the plastic bearing onto the wheel.

I was not able to find a way to remove the axle bolt from the bearing as it was either rusted into its sleeve or was somehow magically affixed, so I simply pried the bolt head through the back wall to release it.

The pulley is a very close fit as a replacement.

I drilled a larger center hole to allow the new bearing to protrude through the wheel.

I decided to drill out three of the six rivets that held the pulley together and then use the holes to affix the pulley to the back of the wheel using new rivets. Small bolts would work as well.

A quick reassembly of the whole thing and I have a much better working wheel again ready for more slow motion videos.

 Working Hard!

Today I called GumbyandTraz about adopting their little girl. I saw some pictures I think and I'm super excited about this! It's our first huge step forward in getting Benji healthy and happy, along with calling around and finding some pretty good rates to get Benji his first check-up and get him neutered.

We are in the process of fixing up a house that we will "Rent to Own" that currently belongs to my DH's uncle. It needs quite a bit of work done to it initially, but we are already well on our way and I anticipate we'll be done by July and ready to move in. This will be a huge step up as it will have 1 bedroom (another one is currently going to be used for supply storage though so we won't be using it for a while), 1 kitchen, 1 living room, 1 dining room, 2 bathrooms. Which compared to our ONE bedroom apartment is crazy big, especially with one cat, one dog, and soon to be two suggies!

Also, I've started up a thread that goes to tutorial links, which is one of my favorite things to find on forums, so I'm excited to be in charge of it I guess, lol. You can find the links here .

Poor Binki hes had soo many changes this yr but considering hes adapting pretty well. um his cage used to b in the kitchen and it was small, but very comfortable with pvc coated wire... which is the best thing ever out there for gliders but its hard to find and even more expensive to ship.. well we made him a 5 ft cage.. the frame is wooden and its galvenized wire.. i wasnt very happy about this but i wash it like evry two weeks with vinegar water, and soapy water, or just soapy water. well he got moved to the garage which is fine because its open for about half the day ... now its getting real hot in florida so his cage was moved out back into my lenai porch... at least here hell know what time of day it is and come out earlier to play.. well see how dat goes im scared .. but im not at home during the week therefore i cant complain about anything... well im trying to find him a female friend this summer and if i do dat would b great.. if u know anyone selling them in either cape coral/fort myers area or miami please let me know.. thanx!!

Affordable Glider Vet for Sarasota Area & West Coast FL People !

Posted by: Sugar Mama
-----
This vet is your best choice if you have gliders who need new glider, regular care - like a neuter and fecal (not emergency care!

They have experience and are knowledgeable in Gliders. Their receptionist owns Sugar Gliders herself and the staff is incredibly sweet.

They are located in Lakeland, FL.

Marcum Road Animal Hospital
Dr. Gideon
131 Marcum Road
Lakeland, FL 33809

(863) 858 1718

- Neuters (They do "Pom On") are $45.00 per Sugar Glider and it includes pain meds in that price.

The "Pom On" neuter leaves the Scrotal Sac intact. They make a tiny slit and remove the testes. The slit is closed with a drop of surgical glue.

- Fecals are $17.00 per Sugar Glider but they may only charge you 1 fee for 2 fecals if you bring 2 gliders in at the same time. Ask if they can do 2 for 1 on fecals.

Sugar Glider PVC Cage Write-Up
By: Eric (AUtigers350z)

Supplies Needed:

9 - 10' long 1/2" PVC Pipe (Silver-Line) ~ $1.50/ea
8 - 1/2" PVC 90º Elbow ~ $0.30/ea
19 - 1/2" PVC Tee Fitting ~ $0.30/ea
3 - 1/2" PVC Cross Fitting ~ $1.00/ea
4 - 1/2" PVC Cap ~ $0.10/ea
6 - 1/2" PVC 4-way Fitting ~ $1.40/ea **
4 - 1/2" PVC 3-way Fitting ~ $1.20/ea **
2 - Garden Plus hardware netting 36"x10' ~ $14.50/ea
1 - 500pk 8" Cable Ties (white) ~ $12.50
4 - 1/4 x 1 1/2" Bolts ~ $0.15/ea
4 - 1/4" Washers ~ $0.10
4 - 1/4" Nuts ~ $0.10/ea
2 - 1" Hook & Eye latch ~ $1.20/ea

Total Price : ~$83.50 + tax/shipping

** Had to order these parts online (littlegreenhouse.com was best price) due to the angles not being compliant with plumbing laws - therefore nowhere locally carried them.

- Purchased all of the items besides the one's with (**) at Lowe's. Make sure all the PVC fittings are slip fittings and not threaded!

Building Process:

- Cut the PVC pipe into the following lengths:

20 - 15" pieces
17 - 12" pieces
4 - 29" pieces
4 - 10" pieces
4 - 18" pieces
4 - 8" pieces
1 - 36" piece
4 - 12.5" pieces
4 - 34" pieces

- Assemble frame according to the following diagram. Should be somewhat obvious by looking at the picture where the different fittings go..

- Assemble the doors using the 12.5" and 34" pieces and the 90º elbows.

- Drill a hole through both walls of the PVC on the frame and one wall of the PVC on the door for each of the hinges (there are 4 hinges total, 2 on each door). Assemble based on the pictures below, using washers to take up space where needed. See pictures below for help..

Top Hinge:

Bottom Hinge:

- Screw the hook & eye latches into the doors and middle PVC between the doors as demonstrated below..

*I found that after the netting was tightly fastened to the frame and doors, it was rigid enough that only one set of hook & eye latches per door would be sufficient. However, if your gliders are escape artists or would like more security, you could install one set near the top and one near the bottom.

- Lay the hardware netting on the outsides of the assembled frame and fasten tightly with cable ties, removing excess with scissors. (Helps to go ahead and attach the netting onto the horizontal parts of the cage first [top, middle, bottom] with the netting facing the inside of the cage). Then fasten a sheet of netting to the outsides of each door using cable ties.

- At this point, you're basically finished with the cage. Make sure the ends are clipped on the cable ties and that nothing sharp is facing inward where the gliders could get injured.

Other things to note:

- I bought (also from Lowe's) a 36"x30" appliance tray that fit perfectly under the cage to catch food, waste, etc.

- On the middle level, there should be an empty hole in the cross fitting to add anything else you might want to get experimental with. I have my Wodent Wheel rigged to fit in there. You should have enough PVC left over to experiment with this a bit.

- Helps to use some sort of power/circular saw to cut the PVC to insure accurate length and smooth edges.

- After I finished cutting everything, I washed them off in the bathtub with hot water to clean them up and get the shavings off/out.

More pictures:

Middle shelf - used for food/water dishes and somewhat of a waypoint for them to rest:
