 bored and thinking of names

Posted by: meggledzzl1124

So I'm bored here at work, and OF COURSE thinking of my soon-to-be suggie(s). I'll be a first time owner, and I'm SO excited, as anyone can imagine. I've been mulling over some names in my head, and keep switching around between A LOT of them. But, I think I like the name Dublin. That's one I haven't heard used yet. Since he/she isn't born yet, I don't know if there's more than one..but if there is, I'm going to try to get the siblings together. If that happens, my boyfriend Jett wants to name one of them Hammy (however you spell it) like off of Over The Hedge. Ha! I suppose I can handle that lol. I think he's starting to get excited too!! He's been set on that name and of course looking up pictures and videos of suggies on youtube. My my how I love him. :) If you want, let me know what you think of the names we've picked out! And wish me luck!!

 Rest in Peace Peitry

Just Wanted to post on the loss of our beloved suggie Peitry. We found him on the bottom of our cage when we went to feed him, called the emergency vet immediatley without much help from him, I attempted to contact a "reputable person whom I thought would be able to help me and she signed out when I asked her...thanks :( " I had to quickly try to find another vet-and by the time we did he was gone. I then with the help of my very good friend Tammy from MO--I am sure most of you know her, she tried to help me find someone that would do a neecropsy on him as he was the epitomy of health.

We got him in for it and received the inital results yesterday and were told that there was no sign of injury, no infection etc everything looked good. The vet indicated that it may have been a stroke. This surprised me as I thought he had to be overweight to have had a stoke and he was not. They sent some tissue samples out to histology to see if that told us anything more, it will be a few more days before we hear that report. We were able to obtain his body and are preparing to bury him this evening. The kids beautifully decorated a wooden box for him to be buried in.

Peitry came to us form a college student who couldn't care for them anymore and it took him a while to warm up to us but when he did boy oh boy. He wanted you to play ALL day lol and would sleep on my chest anytime he was given the chance. He was a energetic silly little guy who liked to be hand fed and then would fall right to sleep. He really was a beloved member of our family and will be sadly missed by all of us and his cage mate Chole.

As far as her I have been spending every minuite I can with her and have been carrying her around all day everyday..thoguh she is already showing signs of possiable depression. I am actively looking for a companion(s) for her ...sooner than later. I have contacted several persons in the classified list regarding gliders in VA. I am located near Harrisonburg VA and would be willing to travel. However the money for new glider(s) at this moment is sparse as it cost us 391.00 for the necropsy on Peitry (not including the cost of the visit where we lost him). If you have any questions or ideas on where I could find companion(s) for her please don't hesitate to email me.

 The opossum nestbox gets warmer

Posted by: kazko

It is going to be freezing tonight and I am going to keep Robin outside. To prepare, I just reworked her foam nestbox a bit with the hopes of the heating pad being more effective. I have a metal radiant barrier in there and I have had the heating pad on the wall so as to warm up the space and try to avoid overheating the animal. That only works so well against the cold, so I have decided to place the pad on the metal sheeting right below where she will nest so that the heat can rise up right to her body. She can bury herself under blankets and sit right on top of the heating pad if she wants to. I did relocate the thermostat a few inches above that area so that it can turn off the system when it gets too warm. I doubt it will shut off at all tonight. The pad only draws 8 watts. If you can imagine an 8 watt incandescent light bulb; well, it would give off very little heat or light, and this pad is no different. It is warming and pretty safe for her and should do the trick.

The pad is a Zoo Med Repti Therm 6"x8" flat nichrome heating pad controlled by a Repti Temp thermostat with probe to turn it off which does the job well.

I fastened the pad and the power wire using metal hvac tape. Since I have the thermostat controller to protect from overheating, I might get the 8x12 version next time if it fits just to give an extra umph to the warming.

You can watch Robin on her webcam , and I am monitoring the box temperature with a wireless probe. I havent been able to figure out how to get it to display on the video feed yet.

Robin opossum moves out of the garage

Posted by: kazko

Today I moved Robin and her cage back outside. The weather has been really nice so I figured that it is time. I used some spare rotting wood to make her somewhat of a roof to provide a little more shelter from the sun and rain. The trees do the job pretty good already though. She still has her warming nestbox if it gets chilly but I imagine that she will spend most of her time up high in the pouches swinging in the breeze.

I still have her webcams working but I need to find a good way to weatherproof the electrical center while still giving it ventilation.

I had her out walking around the yard today and then watched while she dug around in the grass and grabbed something into her mouth. Turned out to be a lizard which gave her quite a smile after chomping on it.

 new glider - Lucy

Posted by: zoomom
-----
Well, it's been awhile since I've posted here. 13 hours of school has kept me busy. This week is Spring Break and the week I'm going to introduce Ricky to his new babe - Lucy. I got Lucy from a pet store. I didn't want to get a suggie from there, but I couldn't find any girls within driving distance from me. I called around and found Lucy. She had a sister, but one is enough for me right now. The pet store didn't know how old she is = they thought probably under 6 months out of the pouch. I took a pouch to the store to bring her home in and I thought she was going to eat through the pouch and eat me. She bit me once at the store when I was trying to get her off the salesperson and again when I gave her a blueberry through the little opening in the pouch when we were in the car. She's fiesty!! I've had her for about 10 days. She's calmed down considerably, but I haven't held her yet. I'm going to take her inside the tent with me tomorrow and see what happens. Her cage is close to Rickys and they've sniffed and sniffed. If all goes well in the tent tomorrow, I'll put Ricky in with us and will be prepared to grab Ricky if necessary. I could grab Ricky much better with less chance of getting bit than I could Lucy. I want them to get along. I have a new large cage coming for them. I've read all the posts on putting them together, but I'm not sure how I'll actually put them together to stay yet. I'm debating on whether or not I should wait for the new cage so they are in neutral territory or if I should clean one of their cages real well and put them together in that first as it is smaller and will force them to be closer to each other. Oh, well, I will wait for sure and see what "tent time" brings tomorrow. I so want them to be buddies. Ricky is unneutered and is 3yrs. old. There is no chance they are related so if they have babies, that will be alright. I would like a colony and Mom wants 2 also. After that, I will have the boys neutered as I don't want to have to rehome any.

A grudgingly responsible decision and a date to be snipped.

Posted by: Otaku

So I found a friend for D’argo and am going to get her on Thursday. The more irrational part of me wants to leave D’argo intact and let them have cute little joeys and for the world to be euphoric and happy and utopian!

Though you guys really don’t know me, I’m going to be rational this time and D’argo is getting neutered on April 22nd. It’s a little far away, I would rather have done it sooner, but oh well… It should cost me about $100, so not too bad. The other vet I called quoted me around $300!

The other reason I’m getting D’argo snipped is that there is a good possibility he and the one I’m picking up on Thursday are siblings. They were bought at the same petstore the same summer.

I’m slightly worried because I’m going to have to ‘quarantine’ them in the same room, I really don’t have the space to keep them in separate areas of my little house. I’m hopping my husband will let me buy the cage she’s in right now from the guy so I won’t have to put her in the little cage D’argo came to us in.

According to the owner she’s had a recent vet check and was found to be healthy, so I really only have to worry about D’argo making her sick, I guess?

I’m not quite sure ho to juggle this one, but I feel like the sooner D’argo has a friend the better off and healthier he will be.

 Getting used to each other!

Posted by: Otaku

So D'argo, once named Buddy, came to live with my husband and I last week. He was in a small bird cage - 18"x18"x22" and really only came out of his pouch to eat. I started calling him my 'sugar poucher' because he seemed like he barely knew how to jump, let alone glide!

He's doing much better now and is starting to become pretty hyper. We've been trying a variety of foods with him, and so far he likes:

rehydrated freeze-dried strawberries
green beans
meal worms
turkey baby food
scrambled eggs
boiled chicken
papaya
plums
yellow squash
bell peppers
Zoo Keepers Secret

He doesn't seem to like:

brocolli
carrots
rehydrated freeze-dried bananas
sweet potato baby food

I'm basically doing a 50% protein 25% fruit 25% veggie diet. I'm going offer Zoo Keepers Secret at all times in small amounts. I'm also going to provide nectar.

 Here We Go Again!

Posted by: Goldwinger

My daughters and I picked up a rescue on February 22, 2009. The young woman and her father met us in Port Royal, Virginia. By the time we got there it was freezing and snowing. What a miserable day to take a road trip.

She had a small bag of stuff and a glider in a smelly pouch for me. Thank god I brought my travel bag. We put his pouch in my travel bag, said our fairwells and headed home. We peeked in the bag to get a look at him and to my dismay the whole top of this poor gliders head was completely bald. I mean no hair on his head whatsoever. I already knew he was overweight but this I was not prepared for. She never mentioned it in her e-mails to me and I asked a whole load of questions. I saved all of them.

I have a Vet appointment set up for him already for this comming Thursday, 02/26/09, and will see how the check-up goes. He's also getting neutered that day as well.

Right now he is in a small cage in my daughters bedroom away from my other gliders. There was nothing I could save from the things that the young woman gave me. The inside of his pouches were completely torn to pieces with loose threads in huge balls of knots. I'm surprised he still has a foot from that mess. All are in the trash. He had not one single toy to play with. I took from my others and gave him some things. They are spoiled anyway so they can share.

He's currently on a bird food diet whatever that is. The young woman gave me a bag but I'm not sure whether to continue to give it to him. I'll talk to the Vet on Thursday. I guess I'll have to give him some until then but I really hate doing it without knowing more about this stuff.

I found out his mate died about 1 and 1/2 years ago. She was found on the bottom of their cage dead and he's been alone ever since. The young woman did not pay him any attention and he's been alone a while.

I'm really scared as to whether I am up for this task. I've dealt with so much from the other two I "rescued". My Luna and Milk Dud but I have him now and will deal this hand I guess I asked to be dealt. I can't hardly stand to see and hear about these poor gliders that are alone and then the people who own them don't have time for them anymore or never did and now they are depreaaed, lonely, sick and terrified of people. What do I do and how do I start to fix this poor poor baby? I guess I know that answer, the VET's and we are headed there.

His name is Jack but my youngest daughter may want to rename him. I told her she had until Wednesday night to let me know because he has a VET appointment and I need to make sure that his name is correct at the Vet's office. I guess it's okay to name your animals if you want to just not sure whether they learn their names or just the sound of your voice and tone when you say their name.

Anyway another glider, another poor baby from a rejected home where people don't learn about the care of their pets and others end up with stressed out and sickly animals and the fear that they will fail. That's where I am right now emotionally. I'm depressed and scared of failing this poor thing.

Luna and Milk Dud to the Vet

Posted by: Goldwinger
-----
Today I took Luna and Milk Dud to the Vet. It was a wonderful visit.

Dr. Thomas fell in LOVE with Milk Dud. Said she was such a cute little girl even with the tip of her ear missing. She got her nails clipped and her fecal done and her weight checked. Her teeth were checked and her fur and her overall appearance and then Dr. Thomas even gave her a treat. She weighs 96 grams. She jumped out of her pouch and was exploring the doctors office. I was just amazed at how well she did for the Doctor.

Luna has been our biggest challenge especially in the food department. She went in for her second check. Very good news for all of us. She has gained 16 grams. She went from 80 grams to 96 grams. I guess she's eating now as we stopped feeding her with the syringe and have just been monitoring her plate and bowl to see if she is eating. She must be getting more comfortable with us. The Doctor said her overall health looks much better than last time and she is doing wonderful as well. Her fecal came out good and she is ready for intro's.

I am so very happy everything is working out so well for my two newest little girls. Dr. Thomas seemed very positive that they would be able to be cage mate's and is so happy that Luna will now have a friend.

I am beside myself with joy at how well all my babies are doing and how much I am learning. I spend so much time on the internet and on this forum trying to soak up all the information I can on the care of these babies. I guess I'm doing pretty good. I can only hope.

I love all these little fur-butts.
