 Tuesday 1/27: intro problems

Posted by: snusie
-----
I've been trying to get Washi and Shikoni together. It's getting kind of frustrating.

I put a towel in the bathtub, and then both boys. I have to carry them in pouches, so those are in the room with us. What happens is, as soon as they see each other they ball up. Shikoni is usually the aggressor in this first encounter. The last few times I've let them go at it, it usually lasts about fifteen to twenty seconds and then they break apart. So far no one has gotten hurt, for which I'm grateful. Once they break apart there are no more confrontations. Washi will typically hide under the towel, tunneling around and coming out from time to time, then back under. Shikoni jumps onto me. I'm right there sitting on the floor beside the tub. I put him back; he marks the towel on the spot where Washi is and then jumps back onto me. I try to leave them in there for fifteen minutes, but Shikoni is getting more distressed the whole time, I can see it. Washi is also pretty upset, he just doesn't know how to handle the situation. Shikoni aims for his pouch, he just wants in there; he can see it from where we are sitting. I've tried hiding it but there just isn't a place; if I leave the pouches in the sink, he finds them; he's even gone up my sleeve.

I haven't even tried to get Shikoni with Kioko; he's bigger and also the more aggressive of the two brothers. My thinking is that if I get him together with Washi it will make Kioko more likely to accept him.

Right now I feel like it will never happen. Granted, there have been some small signs of improvement: the first time I put them face-to-face there were three fights within about two minutes, at which point I was afraid someone would be injured so I stopped the whole thing. Now they'll go maybe ten or twelve minutes after the first fight; but it seems to be upsetting to both of them. I don't know if I should just stand back far enough that Shikoni can't see me; close the shower curtain to keep them in the tub and let the chips fall where they may; I almost feel like giving up. I won't, but I'm pretty discouraged at this moment. I guess I'll see what happens tomorrow.

WARNING: DNS Hijack Trojan and other recent exploits

Posted by: kazko
-----
There are a lot of new exploits out there and one in particular is causing some havoc. It got me just last night. It is called a DNS Hijack or Changer. The trojan installs simply from you visiting a malicious web site, simple as that. I was browsing web administrator sites and blogs last night and got infected. Once infected, it changes your dns settings to a privately controlled and exploited server which intercepts all of your dns requests and proxies them and sends you to fake web sites. The malicious dns server often acts as a proxy and will exchange between you and the real website you are trying to go to and it will use that to collect your passwords and so forth and so on. Also, this system is used to give you a ton of extra popup ads. So if you get a lot of popups, you are probably infected. This is how I realized I was infected as all of my old sites suddenly had popups including sugarglider.com and my browsing became slower too as it had to wait for the proxy dns server to process. From what I have seen, odds are that most of you reading this are infected with at least some ADWare and maybe something worse like this.

What you can do?

First thing, check to see if you have the dns exploit. Open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all. Look for the DNS servers and see if they are what they should be. I didnt write mine down, but I believe the malicious ones on my system began with 238.xxx.xxx.xxx. As an Internet user, you should know what your DNS servers should be for your ISP. Odds are they will be automatic and not manually set which is good.

There are a lot of tools out there to use to search and clean your system. There are almost none that I trust. If you are surfing and get a popup ad that suggests you are infected with something, it's just an ad, it's a lie, and they WANT you to click on it to load up their cruddy trojan crud, so never ever do that.

One tool that I trust is called MalwareBytes Anti-Malware . I recommend that you download, install, update and then run this tool on your machine.

After it detects and cleans off the 200+ things that most of you are probably infected with, you need to check your DNS settings on your machine and make sure that they are what they are supposed to be. This program will remove the exploit, but it will not correct the DNS entries; that has to be done manually by you. Most of you should be set to automatic DNS via DHCP.

So after all of this, you really need to reboot and then hit F8 and select boot into safe mode WITHOUT networking and run the scan again. This may take much much longer this time, so do it at night or when you will be away. In safe mode, fewer things are running and the software can remove more exploits.

I have found that anti-virus softwares these days arent managing to be useful anymore. Mcafee, Norton, ... They all suck, seriously. It may well be worth paying the fee for the professional version of this program to have the realtime protection.

 Sugar Glider Webcams

Posted by: kazko
-----
So after a few months of having no webcams online, I got them all back up and running. There are three sugar glider nestcams and then my opossum nestcam and then whatever else I am experimenting with.

http://www.sugarglider.com/webcam/

I realized that these pages were not showing up at all in search engines so I created a better landing page that they can follow. So I hope this will let more people know that I have these cameras up and running because it can be neat to watch.

As I get more experience with this and locate better cameras, I hope the quality gets better. For the geeks out there, I am running a reverse proxy server as a Vmware guest OS and am using it to map all of the internal camera servers and whatnot through a single external ip address on port 80. Each camera stream shows up as a NAME.jpg from http port 80 and then the javscript refreshes it on the page. Firewalls all over allow this where they do not normally allow video streaming.

I also have a few robotic cameras and can also map the remote control function through the reverse proxy service. I'll get one added to the public webcam list here one of these days.

The cameras I am typically using are these enclosed weatherproof bullet cams from China.

I like the glass cover on the front as it keeps curious gliders from chewing the lens which I have had a lot of in the past with other cameras. I have also had the zoo critters chew the heck out of the camera cables, so I have devised something to attempt to prevent that from now on. I have enclosed the camera itself in the end of a pvc fitting and then routed the cable through pvc pipe and fittings to the side of the cage. Then I have the cable itself wrapped in metal tape hoping that they will not find it fun to chew on. We shall see how that endures. One benefit of the pvc setup is that I can now easily adjust the camera height and position inside of the box to get the best view.

 Co-op Trial at Exotics Vet

Posted by: TiggerBell
-----
So today I went in for a trial at the exotics vets for my co-op. Im taking co-op next semester but they want to make sure I can handle things like blood (I dont pass out or puke) and euthanasia (I dont start bawling), before they "hire" me. I think things went well. It was a REALLY slow day at the office today, but there was a cat that needed to be put down, and they needed to take blood from several different animals. I thought that might be a slight problem for me (Im hypoglycemic and when ever I get blood taken by sugars drop) but I was completly fine by the blood and while the euthanasia was, difficult to watch (I had seen one previous to this) I think I dealt with it well (meaning I got slightly teary, but didnt let it show). Everyone cross your fingers for me that I get this placement. If I dont get this one Ill be going to another office thats not exotics and not as friendly either. I really hope they think I did well aswell. I will let you know if I get it or not!!

 I'm so happy :o)

I can't help it! I have to brag about BabyGirls improvements... As many of you know, she is getting over a upper respiratory infection. Even though we paid a visit to the vet and got her on some baytril, I wasn't seeing the results fast enough to breathe again. She was sluggish, cranky, sleeping all the time in fact, her hours are backwards. She hasn't been waking up until almost 8am! Last night it was 6am, and tonight she got up at 5am! Whoohoo :) I know that is off, but I feel so much better because it was an hour earlier and she was actually playing with me! When I ordered from Suncoast, they gave us a fleece "ring thing" she refused to play with. Today she attacked it, pulled on it, latched onto me... almost back to her normal self :) I can't tell you how good it felt to play with her again!!! Thank God! I am working on getting back in bed before midnight like most normal people do :) I'm saying my prayers of thanks that she is getting better :)

 New Cage

Posted by: momasangel

Well, on 19 Jan 2009 we got our new Excel Tower cage, 30 x 18 x 53 cage... woo hoo... I was so excited. I got everything thing switched over except for the girls and when we did finally get them in there at like 7:30 they got up an explored the new home. I got to put a bunch more toys and it is also easier to access them and handle them because the other cage was homemade I didn't trust it, but this cage is great.. i finally to post some pictures today of the girls and their new cage. I sure do hope that we bond soon, because all they do it crab at me..

 Is playing at night

Posted by: zoomom

Well, Ricky is doing well. Jennifer said he was running around his cage, playing with his rope and bell toys when she got up this morning. That makes me happy. I hadn't gotten the opportunity to see that yet. Whenever I take him out during the day and he's in his sleeping bag, he runs to the opening after I get it on my lap. I think he's looking for a snack but it makes me happy that he's coming out instead of staying in the bottom scared like he did the first couple of days. For not being handled much in the last 3 years, he's a pretty trusting little fellow. I can tell when he's had enough of lap time as he will look for something to snuggle into. **** As for the diet, he LOVES peas! I hate peas so it's a labor of love on my part to feed them to him. I can't stand the smell, but watching him eat the inside while leaving the outer shell pretty much intact amazes me. After peas, his favorites so far are grapes, bananas and of course corn. He liked the yolk of the hard boiled egg, but didn't care for the white. He spits out the chicken and turkey, so they are definately going to be acquired tastes.
I confirmed with my local vet today that she does not do any kind of exotics, so it's off to the Lubbock phone book tomorrow to see who, if any, I can find. When we had a hedgehog, it got cancer and a vet in Lubbock removed the tumor, but I wasn't real comfortable with his bedside manner. Hopefully I can find someone else.

 Monday 1/19

I'm ready to get on with the introductions, but I sure have a hard time getting Washi by himself. I really don't want to start with Kioko, he's so much bigger and dominating. Shikoni getting sick delayed everything but he's better now.

He sure was playful this morning! No Hide-and-Seek, it was Leaping Lizards for about forty-five minutes ... up the robe, jump onto me, jump onto the curtains, the towel bar, the counter, the floor, even the top of the medicine chest. I've never seen him so energetic. I mostly just stood in the middle of the room and let him go, I was kind of like the center tree in a grove. It's a small room, and he was really into the long leaps. No gliding yet, it's probably a matter of time before he goes from one end to the other. If I hadn't been in the way he may have done it this morning. Gave him the last three crickets for a morning snack.

I gave Kioko and Washi an egg last night. I peeled of some of the shell and set it on the floor fleece. Kioko went to it first, he started pulling at the white and eating; Washi was at the food dish getting the mango. I didn't stay to watch much of it, but this morning it looked like they had eaten close to half. Most of the yolk was gone. There are little bits of shell scattered around, that's all. I guess they liked it! Shikoni won't eat hard-boiled egg at all; he barely eats scrambled. Just not his favorite food. I gave him chicken with the mango and celery. His dish was had only a few scraps; the boys left about half of their celery.

I gave Shikoni back his nest this morning. He sure was glad to see it! I had taken it out while he was on the Amoxy, it was just too hard to get him out of it; same with the tunnel. He had two pouches, so much easier. During that medication time he would hardly come to me, he associated me with the medicine and didn't want to take any chances of getting that syringe stuck in his face. Of course it didn't happen every time I held him, but I guess twice a day was enough! He's over that now, he comes right over when I open the cage and gets on my hand the way he has always done. I'm glad about that, he's such a sweet little guy!

Still working on the boys, they still won't come to me if the cage door's open. Washi will usually get on my hand, but not stay very long. Kioko rarely does, and when he does, he only stays a second or two. It's slow going, I think if I had either one as a solitary it wouldn't be so difficult, but since they have each other they only need me for treats!

Cleaning cages today and washing fleece. I washed the toys yesterday, I'll only have two pouches and some floor fleeces and blankets to do today. The bridge and hammocks and extra pouches & blankets got washed last week, so that's a job not needed today. Cage mesh and bars are not too sticky either, just a little wipe down should take care of that.

Bought some porcelain dishes at a garage sale, little Korean sauce dishes, plain white. Just right for the boys. Also found a nice deep squared saucer in a pretty yellow, it'll be great for juice for the boys. Like I need a few more dishes!

I'll get to the Dollar Tree today; hope they have the Cranimals or the bunnies. Our Dollar Tree has a very poor selection of toys; I've never found anything there suitable -- of course I don't go very often. I hate shopping! Belton's stores tend to be very inadequate, but I sure don't feel like driving to Killeen or Temple. Well, we'll see what I can accomplish.

Cleaned cages today and installed floors

Posted by: kazko

With three glider colonies and an opossum in a super large and heavy double cage, I pretty much have five large cages to clean so it can take some time.

I used this opportunity to also install square mesh flooring in the remaining two glider cages. The smaller mesh gives the animals more to rest onto so they might actually be able to open their feet while on the cage floor instead of having to grab a tiny bar for stability.

You can see the difference between the floor and the walls.

Three squeaky clean glider tower cages.

The smaller mesh is also a happy thing for the larger opossum that I keep. You can see the difference the mesh makes on the floor of her cage from the left and right sides in this photo. She goes to the 1" right side to poop and the left is where she eats and hangs out if not up high on the branches or in her nest.

If you are watching at the right times, you can actually see Robin emerge from her comfy heated nestbox to come out to the cage floor to do what she does.

 Name Decision & scratch

Posted by: zoomom
-----
I can't seem to decide on a name for this little guy. He's been everything from Skooter to Snoobi and now I'm leaning towards Ricky. What a change!! His big black eyes remind me of Ricky from the Lucy Shows, which I'm a HUGE fan of. So, I think it's going to be Ricky. That's been the easiest for me to remember too.
Yesterday, Ricky scratched my arm right above my elbow. I didn't think anything of it since I have a zoo full of animals and it's not unusual to have a scratch from something. This morning though, it's pretty infected. I've washed it deeply with an antibiotic soap and put an antibiotic cream on it and it does feel and look a little better. It's taught me to treat any sugar glider scratches right after playing with Ricky though.
Ricky did eat all the veggies I left for him last night. Sure beats the apples and cat food he was used to. Today, I peeked into his cage to see where he was and lo and behold, he heard me and out from his little hammock he came. I think he was disappointed when I didn't have a treat for him, so next time I go armed with a pea or a green bean.
