Posted by: hurley9today is was my 3rd day with henry. while he was in his pouch i took it out of the cage and left it unzipped so that i could clean his cage a little and put a new hammock in that i made for him. i put him under my favorite soft blanket. well he came out of his pouch and wandered around my bed under the blanket! i have a picture that i will have up soon. it was nice to see him out and about, not having to be in his cage!
Dec 2, 2010 Any helpfull tips? Posted by: tiffschludt1916]So recently my husband and I have welcomed two sugar gliders into our home, its been three days and i love them already. we have researched our butts off lol. is there any advice anyone would like to offer up to us? something that a site wouldnt tell us. I have a male and female they are 8 months old. Dec 1, 2010 Nov 28, 2010 Diet Posted by: sparklysuggieSo, I was wondering which sugar glider diet is the best diet? I think Kazko's sounds pretty good. Do you blend it and freeze it so it's like veggie ice cream? Or smoothie? Or do you just leave it how it is? Anyway, I have everything in Kazko's diet except for the nectar mix, which I'm soon getting. I'm also getting crickets and already have meal worms. Is that a good diet? Thank you guys!! :) Nov 28, 2010 Other Animals Posted by: sparklysuggie I know that sugar gliders don't do well around other animals at all. However, I have a dog, but he's not allowed upstairs (where the sugar gliders' cage will be) except for sleeping, which is in a different room than the gliders anyway. Also, I have a guinea pig, chinchilla, and lizard. They're all caged except for individual play time, which won't be around the gliders. So I don't think any of them will be a problem. What I do think might be a problem is my cats. They're kept in my room overnight, and let out during the day. That's the same room that'll have the sugar gliders in it. Also, the cats don't bug the chinchilla or guinea pig at all. All they do is watch them, and they don't even get into a hunting position. The cage wires will be too close for them to stick their paws inside, but could this be a problem? I have a lot of pets, and love them so much. I'm really passionate about sugar gliders and would like to own some, but will they be OK around the cats? Thanks so much! Please comment! Nov 28, 2010 Pet shelters Posted by: sparklysuggieDoes any body know how much sugar gliders cost from pet shelters? I know that regular grays (which I'm planning on getting) can cost from $150-$300 or at least around there, but pet shelters sell cats and dogs for only $20!! Are their sugar gliders usually cheap like that? Also, are they healthy? Thank you guys! Please comment. :D Nov 26, 2010 New Suggie Posted by: sparklysuggieHeya! :D I'm thinking of getting suggies. This is what I have so far. Bedding, water bottle, nail clippers, meal worms, and everything in Kazko's Diet. I'm going to get some toys from a pet shop for them to chew on. I've ordered crickets, a nectar mix, a wodent wheel, a play tunnel, a bonding pouch, and a hammock. I will also get a cage from a pet shop. Also, I am wondering if sugar gliders from pet shelters are healthy AKA if I should get them? If not, how can I find a good sugar glider breeder, or someone who sells healthy sugar gliders? Is it possible that a chinchilla breeder could know where to find healthy suggies if they specialize in exotic pets/animals? Thanks so much! Please comment soon and tell me if there's anything else I need. :D Nov 25, 2010 My Experiences :D Posted by: BailzI thought it would be fun to post something on here... So here goes. I'm just going to talk about my experiences with my Sugar Baby. About a year ago (March 2009), my best friend asked if I wanted a sugar glider. I had no idea what she was talking about. I went and met him one day after school. He was very sweet but even without knowing anything about the animal, I knew something was wrong. He was fed a regular diet of hot dogs, white bread, cornbread, hard candy, and walnuts. He lived in a really tiny parakeet cage and was only taken out once a week or so. I told her I would take him. That night I took him home. I sat up until the wee hours of the morning reading about gliders. The next day I went to the store and got some baby food, fresh fruits, and crickets. I couldn't afford to get a larger cage immediately so I decided to let him have free roam of my room for several hours a night. It actually got to the point that he would just stay out all night it didn't bother me one bit. He seemed to really love it. I would actually find him curled up sleeping soundly under my pillow pretty often. My dad and I got a huge dead branch and put it in one corner of my room and I hung his pouch from it. I thought it was so cute. Soon after, I was able to buy a bigger cage. I'd like to think he bonded to me pretty quickly. He spends a lot of time either in my bra or pocket :) It wasn't until recently-- about a month or so ago-- that I got him on a "recommended diet". I'd always fed him various fruits and veggies and a few crickets. Then I realized, for whatever reason, that I needed to change that. I put him on the Priscilla Price diet. He really seems to love it. I like it too because it's fairly cheap, easy, and I like the variety. After having him for about three or four months, I began trying to find a buddy. I lived in Kansas at the time and just moved to Tennessee about 6 months ago for college. I couldn't find anything in my price range there, nor was there anything that was acceptable (i.e. unnutered male, too old, etc.) When I moved to Tennessee I started my search again. Thankfully, I just recently found a little girl who is looking for a new home. I think she will be a perfect match. I cannot wait to go get her Saturday afternoon!!! I will post updates on the two of them in the coming weeks! :) Nov 4, 2010 Glider updates Posted by: aripolo2[ Hey evrybody its been a while since ive updated you all on my gliders well as you might know i have a 3 yr old glider named binki he is sooo sweet i dont think they come any sweeter than this.. and ive had baby blair for almost 4 months now. .. at first it was hard but lately shes doing great she really seems to be adapting to my brother and my dad... my brother has really gotten over his fear of her bitting him hard and hes doing playtime in the bathroom and she actually prefers to be on him rather than running around and exploring... she lets us hold her without crabbing and she rarely bites now... i believe that before new years she will be tame and pretty bonded to my brother..... i cant wait .... and after this i will start to introduce my two gliders.... ahh how exciting!!!! Oct 31, 2010 Meal worm farm exhaust fan Posted by: kazkoIn response to my previous journal entry A Better Meal Worm Farm
, I have been asked how to actually make an exhaust fan for a meal worm farm. You geeks out there probably dont need help with this but some folks actually dont own soldering irons or have donor computer junk handy, so for them, here it is. It took some creative searching but I finally found some usable product links to make this easy for you. All you need to do is choose any small computer cooling fan
that has the standard PC internal four-pin power connector as shown below, and then pick up a power supply
that has the same connector and that's all you really need. Im sure you can manage to figure out the rest. It is always a good idea to also cover the external side of the fan with a matching grill guard
to protect fingers or possibly curious sugar gliders. You can use your imagination and cut this into your box any way you please. You dont need a large fan or a strong one, it only has to slowly remove moisture. Those of us with soldering irons, skills and junk lying around might even end up using a lower voltage power supply on these or install a rheostat so you can pick a speed that works for your install.
Oct 27, 2010 New Mom Posted by: belovedbrittSo I have 2 new children and new to this site! Remi who is female, 5 months, very shy but likes to check things out now and then. Hermes who is male , 5 months, very very outgoing, loves to be nosy, and bonded to me very quickly. They are sooo cute and I feel so funny because I miss them when I'm not home...... loving this life with sugar gliders Oct 25, 2010 Sigh. Diets, why are you so hard to pick from? Posted by: KristyvanErvenWell. I have tried almost every diet I could find that was decent. Sure enough, I was bonded to a VERY picky sugar glider. To sum it up- Things he likes: Watermelon, Grapes. Yes. Those two things. So I looked around the organic isle of my store, and found a few interesting things. Wheat germ, and Steel cut oats. This made me get creative. So here is my trial diet I fed him that he ACTUALLY EATS, and will be verifying it with a vet to be sure its a good diet. In one bowl (I named the calcium bowl) Two teaspoons of Plain ol' yogurt, three teaspoons of Wheat Germ, Two teaspoons of the Steel cut oats (Red barn brand), blueberries, bananas, and a few meal worms to get him interested. I mixed this all together and it makes a nice chunky paste. In the other bowl (Named the Protein bowl/Phosphorous) I put two hard boiled eggs in(Sliced up), Two teaspoons of Apple sauce, Two teaspoons of steal cut oats, Three Teaspoons of Wheat Germ, corn, and meal worms. Also mixed up to make a chunky paste. Both bowls include vitamins, and a bit of glider nectar. Another bowl contains fresh fruit. (You can use whatever you wish.) The other has a type of glider kibble from SunCoast Gliders. I do not mind suggestions, but do not post with the intent of telling me I am wrong, doing it wrong etc. I was tired of the diet fights, and decided to make my own diet.
