 Our new addition!

We have adopted another sugar glider. Her name was Crabby, we have renamed her Bella. She comes to us from Rebecca in the Ellenington area. Rebecca recued her from a very unclean and undercared for place. She had a fecal smear done and all is well. She has spent about three weeks nursing her to better health.

Bella is very wheel protective and we found out she is pouch protective to. The trip home with her was very stressful for her. There was lots of crabbing. We already had a cage setup and ready to go. So she is now settling in and we are hopeful she will adjust to us OK. She did eat some of her dinner last night too. We will start the bonding process in a few days to let her settle in with us first. We hope to start intro's to our other gliders within a few months.

My other babies are doing great. I feel we are bonding at a fast rate compared to some of of the stories on the forum. All my babies will sit on my and Kneo will fly onto me and off. They are all taking treats from my hands now. Some personities are coming through. Kneo is my clown and is the most playful. Pickles is the cuddly one. Gizmo is still just a bit shy but very playful. Trinity is my challenge, she is very shy and scares easily.

Kneo has been nurtered. Recovery has been easy so far. He is still very playful and does not even notice that he has been fixed. He missed the girls so much we are letting them all together for playtime till he can be back in the cage with the girls.

Hey everyone ^.^
I'm a newbie with suggies and I need a little advice. I have owned one for a few months now and shes about 4 months old. Shes really sweet and loving, So I decided to get another female baby. I bought her from a friend, she is about 10 weeks old and shes sweet with people, but everytime she sees my other glider she crabs and swats at her. My 4 month old seems scared of her and I can tell shes happy to see another glider! but the baby isnt so happy around her. I'm not really sure how to handle them to get use to eachother. Can anyone spare some advice please ? :)
Thanks!

 Bonding & vacation

Posted by: bholland7

Well as some of you know I did go on vacation a week after adopting my four sugar gliders. Not the best plan. I got home this past week end and found that some of my gliders have bonded to my daughter. Thats OK. Now we are back home in my house and they are not very comfortable with me. So I'm back to square one with them. The last two nights I've tried the bathroom play time and no one wanted to come out to play. So now I'm back to holding their pouch and loven on them that way till they are ready to try again. I don't mind because I get up close with them this way. Gizmo is so cute she is my crabby one but she also will get up close(nose to nose) to check me out. Kneo is doing good too. He likes his treats and will come to me for them. Pickles is open to getting her treats from me too. Now Trinity is a different fish. She wants nothing to do with anyone. She is so shy. I'm working on just letting her get used to my hand. She will not take any treats from me yet. She will hide her face so she thinks I can't see her. and she shakes alot when you are near her. No biting or crabbing so that makes me hopeful that I can get through to her. She is so darn cute I just want to kiss on her but I know better. I'm enjoying the time spent just holding the pouch. We have a three person tent that I'm considering putting up to try a tent time.

 My First Sugar gliders

It all started with us meeting a local breeder at a flea market. I fell in love with his four gliders. However did not have the money to spend, $400.00 got you one glider, a very small homemade cage, pellet food and a leash, one bonding pouch.

I was hooked and started the research to learn as much I could before getting any gliders. three weeks later check craigs list everyday for a week. I found a very sad ad that had 4 young gliders for sale. All from the same parents. I called and set a time to go see them. Drove one hour to get there and found a very sad situation. They were being kept in a tiny cage(all four together). The cage had not been cleaned in a very long time. It was caked in pee pees. They and the whole room stank to high heaven both of the sugar gliders and of cigar smoke. YUK! YUK! YUK! None of them had names so sad. They had not been handled for a long time as well.

I decided to buy them at the time because they were very neglected. I brought them home made them a clean sleeping pouch and moved them into a large flight cage. I also started them on fresh fruits and veggies. That night I also started to make blender mixes from ingredients I had at home already. Eggs(cooked), veggies, honey, fruit.

Their nails were over grown so I bought perch covers to help wear their nails down. It's working very well.

It has now been three weeks and they are thriving. I will be taking them to get a vet check and to schedule a nueter for my male Kneo. I noticed a change in their fur coats and some weight gain. The smells are not as bad as well.
Our next goal is to find the materials and make a very large cage for them. I want them to have a castle to enjoy and lots of room for playing.

My babies all have names now. Kneo(Boy), Piclkes(girl), Trinity(girl) and gismo(girl). They are all adjusting well. Trinity is so shy but we are working with her. I like to sit with a book and hold them in their pouch as they wake up at night. Then we go into my bathroom and have playtime. They seem to really enjoy being loose and using me as a climbing tree. I may end up getting a tent too. Would like to try it. I have decked out my bathroom with climbing ropes and a large fake plant that they love to play in. They do let me touch them. Kneo will fly to me if I'm to far away to climb on.

I have set up this tempary home for them that has ropes, wodent wheel, ladders, shevles, corner shelves, toys, sleeping pouches, perches with rough texture to help with nails. Looking into getting some tunnels asap.

I plan to start BML or HPW as soon as I can find ingredients to get it mixed.

We've got our second furry baby!

I'm so excited! I was looking through some classifieds on Hoobly and found an owner in the Chicago area with 3 16 weeks OOP joeys, 2 boys and 1 girl. Our biggest problem with purchasing anything right now is that husband is in the reserves and they don't really care about sending out the checks right away. So we are waiting on payment from them before we make any decisions on the furry babies.... but now that we have found Artemis a companion we both feel much better about moving forward with this!

 Pup Tent

I don't know if any of you have ever put up a pup tent and got into the tent with your babies, but I did the other day. Stuck the pup tent in the middle of the living room and released some crickets in there. Climbed in w/my babies and they went hunting. I loved it. Watching them have so much fun. I brought in my wodent wheel and let them play in it. It was just fun to bond with them in that way. Please feel free to comment on this topic. I'd love to hear other stories on unique ways to bond with them. Thanks.

I would love gliders within the next year...

My name is Jenna and I'm going to be 21 in Novenber of 2010. I am a huge animal lover I've have animals of all sorts. I've had Ferrets, dogs, cats, snakes, frogs, lizards, iguanas, hamsters, and rats. Not all at once of course. I have also taken in 5 baby squarrils and nursed them to health, unfortunately i came to find out why the mother abandoned them...they were very ill and died 2 months later.
I currently have a pug his name is nicholas and he is the light of my life. I go to college but the campus is by my house and I live with my mother (because of this garbage economy). I am hoping to get a pair of gliders for myself because I want another additions to my family. I have been debating on whether to get gliders for about almost 4 years. Now i really know i want some shuggies =]

I do have the time to dedicate to them and if anyone has any joeys or want to put up for adoption within the next year email me at strwbewykiwi@aim.com I'm hoping to adopt around the beginning of 2011. Thanks

 Hm. First post...

Alright, so I'm Alex and I am currently the slave to a joey with no name and a glider who is about a year old named Kayla. :)

I love my gliders so much and unfortunately was very irresponsible about another male glider I had named Mikey. I loved him so much but his curiosity got the best of him when I was heading into the house. He jumped off me without my noticing and ran away.

This is probably going to sound like a rambling but I'm sorry.
Well, I'm 18 and I love gliders. I feed mine the BML diet with some mealies and fruits my mom brings home from the store.

My new joey came home with me yesterday and while his fur is beautiful and he eats well, I recently noticed that he's missing a couple of fingers. He's a special little guy and he needs a special name :)

Um... I'm not sure what I'm getting at in this entry but...
yeah....

My new little guy loves to crab. I touch his pouch, he crabs. But the interesting thing to me is that when i pet his head a little he calms down and stops crabbing. It's cute. The thing I'm worried about the most however is that the store I bought him from has a bunch of joeys crabbing in one cage split in half to divide the males from the females. There were at least seven in the female cage and they were all obviously unhandled. I'm hoping that this joey will take to me well if anything.

 Milk Dud and the Rescue's

Posted by: Goldwinger
-----
I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. Tonight when I went to the cage where Milk Dud, Jack and Luna live to see if they were awake I opened the cage door. To my surprise Milk Dud just can right to me, crawled on my arm and let me walk away from her cage and take her in the kitchen. She was still a bit nervous but just crawled around on me looking around and checking things out. I did not even have any treats on me. She just came out and to me without any bribery. Of course I had to rewatd her with a treat once we got into the kitchen. I was so excited I could hardly stand it.

But that's not even the best part. After I had Milk Dud out my husband went to their cage and opened the door and low and behold LUNA came out of the cage and crawled onto my husband. After she went back into the cage JACK did the exact same thing.

After 1 1/2 years I cannot believe we have finally gotten to this point. It's the day I've been waiting patiently for. They trusted us and did it all on their own.

My biggest surprise is Luna because she is the most timid, scardest of the three and runs from almost all human movement so believe me when I tell you she not only did this once but Three (3) times. No treat bribery involved at all. Complete trust and I still can't believe it happened.

These gliders have never left the comfort of their cage on their own before and tonight we got to enjoy it for the first time. It's like watching your child take their first step.

I am just ever so thankful that my patience and my daily routine paid off and I think my rescue's are finally starting to trust me and my husband.

Remember everyone who questions whether or not your glider will ever bond with you that they may not do it right away but with love and patience, constant human contact and routine and some treats here and there that it will happen one day. Just love them with all your heart until they feel comfortable and feel trusting.
