 State Fair of Texas 2012

We went to the State Fair today. It was pleasant and I had a good time. We saw the bird show as usual. The "Dominator" tornado chaser car was there parked under a tree. But our focus was on food. We got one of everything deep fried that we thought we could stomach and shared it. All of the "winners" were terrible and my favorite out of all the things we tried wasnt even on ANY list anywhere, it was the deep fried pepperoni pizza. It was fabulous!

 Mating season

I went out the back door this morning half-awake and was surprised by 8 to 10 squirrels on the porch pergolas, all collecting and grunting. My presence disturbed them somewhat but I witnessed a couple of them mounting so I figured out what was going on rather quickly. The following hour or so the squirrels near and distant were grunting, chasing, just moving constantly while randomly collecting in areas.

I think the "play" is part of the mating ritual where they show off to each other by being super active and then eventually a boy gets a hump in. The play, the mock fighting, mock mating, all lead up to this moment.

This is probably not a great time to be looking for Nibbler.

 Lucky Glider Baby Goats

Here are the baby miniature goats at Lucky Glider. I added some slow motion milk sac punching at the end. It is rather interesting to see.

 Found first duck egg today

I found an egg today just sitting in the middle of the yard with perhaps a singly placed twig for cover. I read that they lay one egg per day so it will be interesting to see if more come and/or if this gets taken by a cat or other critter.

 Squirrel meets sugar gliders

7am this morning I heard Nibbler out front making a commotion with the empty seed feeder. I went out to load it up with seeds and ended up bringing him inside to get some treats. The sugar gliders were all still stirring so he got his first eye full of them. He was very interested in them instead of the pecan I gave him. He was intently watching while contorting his body in various squirrel ways such as standing up high, down low, one leg in the air, head movement... He never tried to jump to the cage but he was very interested in watching them.

I thought that was notable. Of course no video...

 Roadtrip to Los alamos, NM

This is our trip to New Mexico to tour the particle accelerator at Los Alamos. We got to see and understand some very interesting things while spending all day at the lab, including: Cockroft-Walton multiplier, Faraday cage, proton injectors, LINAC, lots of beam pipe and tunnels, proton storage ring, proton radiography, neutron scattering, isotope production, various experiments, beam paths and targets, endless array of unbelievable humongeous power-hungry magnets: benders, kickers, quads, focus/defocus, cryogenics, vacuum, klystrons, cooling, ion pumps, detectors, choppers, bunchers, unimaginable array of power and control wiring for all the above.

A week later and I am still in awe of the massiveness of the mission and tools over there.

CLIPS: video of the Lesharo enroute, free BLM camp site, boondock propane coffee, picked up some Trinitite, view of the Rio Grande from my cousin's back yard, driveway overnight with electric coffee, a few things we saw on our lab tour, clips from Bandelier, expensive RV parked next to me, Valle Grande, road to hot springs, peaceful clips of the Jemez River, retuning home.

Thought I would share an old project

This is my back yard at night. I installed all of the lights and wiring and the pergolas and planters. Stuff has finally grown up so that it looks more like it was planned.

The lights are all electric and I used multi-channel flicker controller circuit boards to make them appear like soft gas lamps. It's a neat effect overall. The center lamp post was rescued from a neighbors garbage and I converted it from gas to bulbs and we also etched the clear glass with chemicals to help add to the gas lantern effect.
