I recently adopted a pair of sugar gliders. I don't think they were taken care of very well. The male is missing hair above both of his eyes, but he doesn't have the normal bald spot on his forehead. Is this normal or could it be another problem?

If he is neutered, he may not have one. Mine never did either. Do you have a picture of his face? Bald spots are sometimes caused by overgrooming from stress but I think his bald spot not being there isn't a cause for alarm if he's neutered. Have you had them in for a vet check yet?

I will have to take a picture of him and post. He is not neutered. It could be stress. I really don't think the original owners took good care of them. I've only had them about a week so I have not had a chance to take him to the vet.

Do you know how old they are? I guess my best suggestion would be to get them in for a check as soon as you can.

There could any number of issues. Over grooming from stress, dietary deficiency, or some skin problem such as mites. I see you've already stated you'll be getting him to a vet, I think that's great. And welcome to the site!

Just wanted to let you know some males that are housed alone even unneutered won't develop a bald spot, I mean why should they? They're the only glider around, they must not feel a need to mark stuff. I never saw my glider mark anything until we took him to a hotel, and I never saw a bald spot until AFTER his neuter when we bought more gliders to keep him company.

Good idea on taking him to the vet! When in doubt always contact a good vet!
With that being said, both my girls had almost triangle shaped baldness behind both eyes. I have had them about a month now & with a greatly improved diet, (50% protein, 25% veggies, 25% fruit each day) more enrichment, (a larger cage, toys, out of cage time) both of their baldness is going away.
So, get him to the vet asap ... but, try not to worry too much! ;-D

Vet says my glider isn't sick, however he needs a better diet. I found out the previous owner gave him alot of cat food, apples, and peanut butter. They believe the bald spots are due to the diet and the poor care he has had. The bald spots are triangular shaped above his eyes. So overall, I'm happy that I got these gliders so I can give them what they need. They need some work (don't like being handled and bite sometimes) but I love them and they are worth it.

It's so great to see a new owner taking such good care of there new Gliders and not dissapionted that they are not so cuddly like everyone thinks they should be. It sounds like they have found a wonderful home. We all hope you become a regular on Glider Gossip and let us become part of your Sugar Gliders lives.

I have a Suggie male who is 8 yrs old and looks like he is starting to have a receding hair line behind his right ear. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It looks like someone has parted his hair in a way. His diet has always been fresh fruits and veggies w/ glider aid and mealworms. Thanks for you help in advance.. Im not sure how to post on here yet so sorry.....

Charub, she really needs to see a vet, to rule out anything serious. What are you feeding her?
