Thought of another question. Can sugar gliders eat cheese? Like cheddar or mozzarella? I read they like cottage cheese but should they eat other kinds?

Yeah, from the research I've done it's bad news to give them cheese, other than cottage cheese. I'd be afraid of making them constipated. That stuff is bad news for humans if we have too much. Imagine them with their little bodies!?
Oh geez. haha

It's OK to feed them cottage cheese and it's OK to give them other cheeses along with a combination of other foods.

As hind-gut fermenters, which enlarged caceums, gliders have the ability to break down all kinds of foods from pollen grains to gooey saps. Cheese does not over-tax their systems but of course don't over-do it. I mean too much of any one food is not a good idea...

So far, the notion that sugar gliders are "lactose intolerant" is not substantiated by any credible sources I have been able to identify in my research. At present, the notion appears to be an internet myth.

After all, they live on milk for the 15 week pre-weaning process so it's not like milk and by association, milk by product, are off limits.

We will continue to look into this because it seems to be a recurring issue that a lot of people are concerned about. If we find out anything new we will share that data.

Thanks for the replies :) I think I will just stick to giving them some cottage cheese once in a while for now.

I'm with Terry, I feed my girls a little cheese once in a while and it is one of their most favorite treats. But as always in moderation like Ed said.

Cheese doesn't even last in my house, primarily due to my 3 year old. I don't think I would even have the CHANCE to give my girls a tiny bit even if I wanted to. XD
But I don't know about the entire claim that they're lactose intolerant. When I made them scrambled eggs for their BML diet I added milk, just like I always do when I make scrambled eggs, and there have been no issues and it's been just over a week. Granted it's severely watered down, still.

I have not asked the previous owner if he put scrambled eggs in his BML diet and if so if he scrambled the eggs with milk, but wither way, they seem ok.

I'll give mine a few shreds of marble cheese from time to time, usually sprinkled over the ground turkey and then heated for a minute to melt. They love it! It's a nice treat. But not too often because of the fat.
