hi everyone so as it says in the name, I live in the philippines. I highly doubt anyone would know, but if they do, could you tell me a vet somewhere in the manila area? preferrably near makati city? the last vet i called said that they wouldnt neuter my boy gliders because they werent together with any girl gliders, and they dont want to neuter them because they dont know much about sugar gliders. thanks

If they are not with a girl it is not neccessary to nueter but it will help with smell and sometimes with aggression, but if he is a sweet boy you should be fine. Also do you have 2 boys? They should always be in pairs or more.

Neutering is recommended even with two boys as from what I hear two un-neutered males will be more aggressive and more likely to fight.

to filly47: yes they I have 2 boys; yes its not neccessary but they smell pretty bad and their scent glands havent even fully appeared, but aside from that they also fight alot. its usually just the normal playfight thing but it could always lead to something else...

to wintersSong: yes those are reasons why i want to neuter them, but, as i said, im not asking what neutering is for, im asking if its worth the risk and if anyone knows how risky it is for someone who doesnt know much about gliders to neuter one (or two in my case).

so i got some answers, but they dont really answer my actual question
1: is it that risky for someone who has neutered small, exotic animals to neuter sugar gliders and
2: does anyone know or can find a vet in the philippines near the makati area?

I completely agree with you wintersong. I have heard more success stories with nuetered boys, but I have also heard of success stories of intact males in a pair from a few members. My concern was for an inexperienced vet. Personally I weigh the pros of nuetering to the complications of a vet who has never worked with gliders, especially when putting them under and using the correct type of ane....okay I can't spell it....and the right amount. I hope someone else will post if they know if a small animal vet is qualified to snip suggie man parts.

yes i did get them neutered, but they still fight alot but does anyone know why even after several weeks, the scent gland on their head has disappeared (i have a feeling i spelled that wrong)but the one on their chest hasnt? thanks

The scent glands will definitely shrink down - but they still exist. And sometimes, so do small portions of the bald spots.

Is the cage large enough? They could be fighting if they do not feel they have enough space.

You might see the one on their chests for a long time. With my adult male, I can still kind of see it and he was neutered in Sept. of 2008!

I can still see Benji's chest gland after his neuter over a year ago. It's definately not as obvious or "greasy" looking as it was before neutering. AND he smells so much better!!

ok thanks everyone. to answer the cage question, its about the size have a large mini fridge (ha ha ha), a little bit bigger maybe...

Maybe try going to something twice as big- then they can give each other some space ;o) Good luck with them!
