I really need some advice because me and my vet are soooo confused. My lil charlie has been sick for a REALLY long time. I got him back in July 8weeks OOP...in Late august he was taken to the vet for bleeding while he pooped. In the beginning of October he stared hissing real bad when he peeped and would get sooooo swollen and black and blue it looked like he was trying to pass a blueberry. When i finally found a vet it was the middle of October. he was treated for a UTI...two weeks later he was still sick. Since then I have been to vet getting his glands squeezed every two weeks and has been on a ton off meds. the last time i was at the vet was on 12/28, with again extremely swollen glands. We put him on Beytril for 28 days and he is still not better. He has never peed right either. My little girl pees right away in streams of fast drops and she's done. Charlie will only pee one or two drops at a time. He then will drag his bottom around the cage to help with the rest he will leak for hours. I also have to wear a certain shirt when i play with him because he constantly pees on me....Also since Dec 15th his urine has smelled like fish.....Any help would be so appreciated. I haven not seen any other glider with these symptoms and my vet is talking surgery...she's nervous because he is not even a year and she has only done this once on an adult...sorry this is so long there is just so much...

Poor Charlie. Has the vet tried to culture the urine? Baytril is a pretty good antibiotic. I'm surprised his anal glands keep getting impacted. I didn't think it would happen to gliders. Another vet might be able to help better.

You may want to see if you find a similar illness listed here:

I'll also post this over there in case anyone has any insight. In the meantime, where are you located? Maybe we can help find you another vet to consult that may have more experience or be able to provide a second opinion.

Here's the photo:

First off, a glider's anal glands really should never be expressed. It is very dangerous for them and could be the very reason he is still sick. A glider's cloaca is a multi-purpose opening, and squeezing anything into it (as can very easily happen when one expresses the anal glands) can cause infection to spread to multiple organs in the body.

If your glider is truly having multiple issues with anal gland infection, then the glands need to come out. It is a very, very simple surgery for sugar gliders, as the anal glands are not the same as they are in cats or dogs. Furthermore, your glider is not at all too young for surgery.

Please give me a call
806-274-9177.

Also, next time you are at the vet, have your vet give Dr. Walsh a call. He is extremely experienced, has removed anal glands from gliders before, and is the vet I trust with all my special needs gliders.

As an aside - from your picture it does not look like your issue is anal glands, it really looks like your glider has a different issue. Please call me to discuss this.
A glider's anal glands are a bit further back. It is not the best picture, so I could be wrong, but I'm suspecting you have a different issue going on.
