Ok, so my glider has been overgrooming, and now, shes biting her butt, people say that can kill them, and it says make a collar. And what can I use to make a collar?????
HOLD HER AND KEEP HER FROM DOING IT UNTIL YOU CAN GET HER IN A COLLAR. it will take a few tries to get them in the collar, and she'll fight it.
Takee her to a vet and have them run a urinalysis and a fecal smear, it sounds like it could be from depression or stress though from the overgrooming, I'm not exactly sure though only a vet can tell you.
Well, its going to be hard to find a exoctic vet!! I havent taken her, her formal owner had taken her before I bought her, so I thought she didnt need it, and i cant get ahold of that person that sold her to us to ask which is her vet! Ive got her with me right now, im crying over it Dx
Nashville is far away from you, but there is a vet I took neo to that is experienced with SM's. Maybe your family can make a day of it, and visit your sister.
Or if you call the vets around you and say you need a general wellness exam for an exotic animal to check for a UTI or crystals in the urine, they should take her.
A quick and easy e-collar can be made from a plastic lid to a yogurt or similar container. Cut to the center, cut out a teardrop shaped hole large enough for the neck, pad it with a little tape, apply around the neck by overlapping the ends and using a stapler to fasten it. It should not slip off yet it should be able to rotate with effort so that it is not too tight.
It could be from being lonely, it could be from an infection. If her pee doesn't smell strong and she doesnt hiss when she pees and her poo is normal....with her overgrooming in my (NON PROFFESIONAL) opinion yes, it seems to be from stress or depression. Make sure she eats and drinks normally and keep an eye on her. In her collar you may want to put an old fleece blanket at the bottom of her cage or a hammock since the colar makes it hard to get in pouches. I'm sorry this is happening to you.
The real trick with a collar is to make it a funnel such that the animal cannot reach it's nether regions. This design is borderline and may still allow such especially if done poorly. I need to try a larger lid from a butter container or such and funnel it more to see if that does the trick better. It is ok to cut off the edge as that ads weight and discomfort.
