I cant believe it. I had my gliders with me most of the afternoon. I just put them back in their cage about 1 1/2 hours ago. Went in to check on them again and Tosca has a nasty bite on her neck.

Ive had gliders for almost 4 years and NEVER had anything like this happen before. I am in shock.

I cleaned her wound - dried it and put Neosporin on it. She is now alone in a pouch with me. She will be put in the hospital cage tonight and until she gets better.

If need be, we will make a trip to St Louis to the vet tomorrow. I will keep you all updated.

I'm sorry that this happened Rita, and yes your right daily and nightly pouch checks need to be done.

I know Tosca will heal up fine, keep at it Rita! :)

Goodness, Rita, I'm so sorry. Do you have any idea as to who it was that bit her? Could she possibly be coming into heat?

Thank you. I am just sick about this. You hear so many horror stories of gliders who take months to heal after they are bitten...

i'm sorry this happened, but glad you caught it early! On a somewhat side note, I'm heading to the store tomorrow morning and am updating some of the things in my emergency kit. I have neosporin, but don't have the sterile .9 saline solution. I'm guessing this is completely different than the saline soltution used for contact lenses? Is this something I need to get from my vet, or is there something else (along the lines of peroxide) that I'd be able to use for cleaning wounds?

Sorry Rita. I hope she is all better soon and no vet visit is warranted.

Thanks for the reminder though. You just never know.

In walmart (or other like stores) you can find a bottle of Sterile Saline Solution for emergency eye flushing. Its a clear/white bottle with black writing on it.

( i cant seem to find a photo of it.)

This is just sterile saline, and can be used to flush wounds as well as the eye. Its nice to keep in the house for emergencies or in your glider kit. My Walmart sells 2 sizes, one is a large bottle (not sure of the actual amt) and a smaller bottle that would be about half the size of a bottled water bottle.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, everyone. Im sure Tosca appreciates the healing thoughts.

Right now, Im thinking of the post Ed had regarding the glider with the mating wound. I only have one neutered male, so not sure if this is a mating wound or not. But anyway - the glider appeared to be healing well, wound was scabbed over - but there was infection growing under the scab. This scares me.

I think Tosca will be going to the vet on Monday if she doesnt need to before. I would rather give her some antibiotics now to hopefully stop any infection.

No - I have no idea who bit her. Benji was neutered before he met the 3 girls and Ive never seen him try to mate with any of them. But I guess that doesnt mean he wouldnt ever. Tilly is my mindlessly happy little girl. She has never bitten - ever. Weasel is my bossy cranky one - but again - she only bites me, not the other gliders. It would break my heart to think they would bite each other like this out of anger.

Tosca is a very sweet, shy girl. She would never start a fight.

I dont know - I can only speculate. This has me very upset.

For those of you who are new - the reason Tosca has been moved into a cage by herself is so the other gliders wont groom her wound and make it worse...

Tosca did well last night. She ate well and ran in the wheel. Her wound looks good - nothing infected. So I will continue to watch her thru out the day - cleaning her wound and putting fresh Neosporin on it.

Tomorrow, Im calling the vet located here. They arent glider vets, but I think they will be able to do what I need instead of me driving over an hour away. Basically, I want her to have an antibiotic so the wound wont get infected deeper than what I can see. That is my main concern right now.

Hugs to you and Tosca. Glad she did well last night. What do you clean her wound with? I have neosporin and saline solution but do you use anything else?

That is exactly what I used - saline solution. You just squirt the saline solution on the wound several times to flush out any dirt or bacteria then pat the wound dry with a piece of clean, sterile gauze. You then put a big glob of Neosporin on the wound, pushing it down into the opening. It makes a big, greasy mess of their fur but that can be dealt with later.

Now today, Im wondering how to go about cleaning it due to the Neosporin that was applied last night. Anyone have any suggestions?

Poor Tosca! Does it need to get cleaned again if the Neosporin is still there? Does it act like a barrier?

After speaking to Val (Thank You,Val!!!) here is the plan for Tosca. I feel soooo much better now.

I have decided this is not an emergency situation. If her wound was bleeding or infected, then it *would* be an emergency.

Neosporin will be kept on her wound until she can see the vet, whom I will call first thing in the morning. Any type of open wound requires antibiotics, and I will be asking for an antibiotic injection called convenia. Convenia stays in their system for 14 days so there is no need to give meds daily. If the wound is not healing as well as it should in 14 days she can have another shot of canvenia. I will also ask for the pain med metacam and give that to her for a day or two. A wound like this can take up to 6 weeks to heal.

Most needed right now is for her to be kept calm and as stress free as possible. Stress slows healing. So I am going to put her back with Tilly, Weasel and Benji and keep them all on me today. I will watch to see if they are going to mess with her wound. If they dont, then I will leave her with them tonight and see how it goes. If they do try to clean it, then she will need to be either separated again or put only one glider in with her so she is not lonely.

Again, check on your gliders OFTEN. You never know what the next hour will bring. I am still stunned by this...

Will keep all of you updated on her progress.

Thank you Rita for the detailed update. I am always worried about wounds (mostly mating wounds) and it was wonderful of you to post such detail as to help me feel that I could do the right things if I ever found myself in this position. Prayers for you and Tosca as she begins her recovery.

You are welcome. That is what we are here for - to share and learn from each other.

By the way - the dosage of the Convenia antibiotic shot is .01cc - same thing with the dosage of metacam.

The Convenia antibiotic shot is something fairly new in the glider world. Please ask for it if your gliders ever need antibiotics. It will save both you and your glider the stress of trying to give meds everyday. Plus, you are assured the glider is getting all of the meds. When we give by syringe, we really dont know how much of it was swallowed.

It looks like Tosca will stay alone until she heals. As soon as I put her with the other 3, they immediately went for her wound.

I hope and pray she can rejoin them in a timely manner. I really dont relish the thought of doing introductions again. Her cage is right next to theirs and they were "talking" back and forth last night. I will try again in a few days to put her back with her cage mates.
