Hi ya all,As all of ya know I put a female glider with a neutered male and it was LOVE at first site, well everythings been going well till tonite,Hurley is being way agressive and keeps on trying to hold Lousia in one spot by the back of the neck,(and being rough about it) hes tried before to do the nasty but tonite is different, hes really trying and he seems frustrated as well, but anyway I played with them both for awhile then I came in the other room to play with the others and all of the sudden hurley and lousia are fighting big time too and holleren too real loud so I went in there and took lousia out of the cage and shes now in her old cage alone again,is this normal?and how many days is she in heat? and also should I try to put her back with him in the morning so they can sleep together? someone plzs advise,I feel bad but am I doing the right thing?

I think she's in heat for three days. I would say that, because he's being so very aggressive, you're wise to separate them for the duration. Mating wounds can be very nasty and neither you nor Louisa needs to deal with that. (Please check her carefully now and maybe tomorrow night too, especially the back of her neck and head.)

I agree. You can try putting them back together to sleep but I'd only try that if you'll be around to keep an eye out. When mine have mated before, I saw it during the day as well. Daddy is quite the gentleman though...I never once knew any of the girls were in heat until I saw mating and even then, no noise. LOL

Lousia is not happy she does not like being alone, but under the circumstances shes got no choice.she seems confused poor thing.oh yeah just wanted to share with you all this glider (lousia)when I got her she was wife a really big male and he was mean to her they had been together for years 3 i think but anyway I seperated them and she was so mean, big time well now shes so loving its getting better everyday, she lets me hold her and no more crabbying.whats sad is I did not want to bond with her bc I wanted her to have a new home and that has not happened so far but our relationship has grown and I do love her so,shes got a cute little personality and hurley hes a handsome boy too I wish I could get all of the gliders in one cage together.maybe one day Hurley is looking for his girl even now in the day time, these animals are so funny sometimes.glider love..............when they met it was instant love.

A strong female will be able to put off the male attention unless she desires it. But the male can be tenacious and things can get rough. I think I have been lucky to not see this behavior as my critters are getting older and they are all in colonies so the desire to mate is less than a new m/f pairing. If you do have a litter, you will probably see future heats go easier even if they dont mate.

I would separate them for the 3 day duration. Believe me, mating wounds are really bad. They take forever to heal. In the least, they require a vet wisit, cleaning the wound and antibiotics. Worst cases require stitching and even death.

My Tosca had a nasty bite on her nect and was spearated for two weeks from her cage mate. Im still checking her everyday and saw last night that the wound area has more fur missing. Im seriously considering separating her again. <<sigh>>

oh no Rita. Yeah, I'd say take her out now and let the fur grow back before returning her. So sorry. That fur being missing is an invitation for over-grooming, etc.

the fighting is part of the mating ritual and it's natural for her to fight him off and then finally succumb to his advances. It is OK to separate them for a few days like the others said. They go into heat pretty much like clockwork every 28 days. Lasts two or three days.
