 Thursday 1/1

There hasn't been too much to record, just the same routine. Today I thought I would try some face-to-face introduction. I put a soft towel in the bathtub, took two mealies in a jar lid; got Washi out of the sleeping pouch because he has the gentler temperament of the two new boys; and took Shikoni nest and all. Got the boys into the tub and used worms to entice them out of the bonding pouch and nest, respectively. They both were a little sleepy and not too active; they ate their worms and then Shikoni moved over near Washi. There was quite a bit of sniffing of tummies, feet and butts; then Shikoni jumped at Washi's throat! They scuffled for about two seconds and broke it off; moved away from each other; a little more sniffing and another attack. Again they broke off and then fought. The fights were just two-second scuffles, until the fourth fight; that one was much more serious, I had to break it up. Shikoni ran right up my arm, I checked him for injuries (none) and then got him calmed down and back into his nest. With the other hand I was soothing Washi, poor little guy; gave him his pouch and he got right in it. I took them back to the library and got Shikoni into his cage; kept Washi with me for another fifteen minutes or so. Checked him also for injuries, also none. Once he was settled I took him home too; the first thing he did was get a big drink of water. I gave everyone a cricket and left them in peace.

Right now Washi and Kioko are sound asleep. Shikoni's up and running in the wheel, he doesn't seem to be distressed by his afternoon wrestling match. I'll try again in a few days. Sure hope it works sometime soon, I'm ready to get them all together in one house. But I know the mantra ... patience, patience, patience.

Offered collard greens for the first time yesterday. I simmered a chicken tender in the microwave, then put the greens into the chicken water and nuked for thirty seconds; they were still bright green and just slightly steamed. Kioko and Washi cleaned the bowl! Shikoni didn't eat any of the greens. But he doesn't like anything new, generally the third time I offer something he'll eat it. Except bugs, he took to them right away!

I went to water the garden with the bottlebrush yesterday. There are only a few flowers right now, it was being visited by several honeybees and a goldfinch. So I left the flowers. Haven't had time to visit the nurseries, they're usually all closed on Sunday and Monday, my days off.

 Sugarglider Bathing

Posted by: BuddyCup
-----
Smells:
Sugargliders have stink-glands much like skunks but less strong. It is important to thorougly clean their cage [including toys] at least once a week.
Hygiene:
Sugargliders are self-grooming which means they clean themselves. Though if you feel it neccesary you can purchase shampoos and conditioners specialized for sugargliders at your nearest sugarglider retailer.

 Robin's webcams are back online

Posted by: kazko
-----
It has been awhile since I have had any of my webcams running. During the Summer I was doing my best to save energy so I disconnected anything not necessary to trend my power usage and find out how I can save money.

I have finally started hooking up webcam servers again. Robin now has two cams in her cage which is still parked out in the garage for the Winter.

If you can see the images below, it means that the cameras are on and the images are live and clickable.

Being out in the garage, there is no ethernet available for the camera servers. So I modified an old Linksys wifi/router/hub box with a hacked firmware to turn it into a wireless bridge and hub. So that gives me an easy four ports out there and I am using two for the cams.

 Sugar Glider Love and Care

Posted by: BuddyCup
-----

I have 3 sugargliders now: a baby boy: Peppermint, my baby girl: Buttercup [now a mommy], and my sister's baby boy: Emu [now a daddy]

I love them all dearly and they brighten anyone who see them's day. They require though a lot of love, care, and attention. You have to remember with glider's to put yourself in their position. To give them plenty of cage space and to often play with them. They require about 1/4 cup of fruits per glider [full grown] and 1 tablespoon of grains per glider [also full grown]

Babies:
Babies need to be taken away from their parents at minimum age of 8 weeks. ***Hint": This may seem unfair but you need to take into account that in the wild sugargliders will be released away from their parents at that age. With domesticated animals it's different because they cannot naturally release them for they live in a cage.

 The New Gliders

It was there first night here and so far so good. The cage they are in was the one they came in. I will have to clean it and pouchs that came with it. The pouchs are realy bad. You can't even hold them that is how bad they are. These little one are so sweet. The old owner said she could not put her hand in the cage with getting attacked. I didn't have any problems at all. I put my hand in when female was running in her wheel and she just looked at it and keeped running in her wheel. I had to get them a water bottle becouse she send one with them. So when I went to walmart I got that and I even got them some monkeys too. Yep I already spoiling them like my other babys hehe. They didn't eat much last night but that is ok since last night was there first night here. In a couple days they will be fine. This is the first time I seen a WFB up clost and they are so pretty. I am realy glad I took them in and gave them a for ever home. I don't know why they went through 3 home's. But they don't have to worry about leaveing this home becouse they are here for good. Welcome home Precious and Doodles and don't worry my new baby's you won't be leaveing this home at all. You are here for good.

 Bonding

Posted by: momasangel

Well we are trying to bond with our girls and shew wee, it is a time and a half. We have been doing a lot of tent time with them and I think that has made the most progress with them. They like to stay up late though, they usually go to bed around 1 in the afternoon, so usually I will take the pouch and the girls and carry them to work with me. I hope that is doing the trick. I am excited.

 Pedipaws nail trimmer

Posted by: kazko
-----
So I got a Pedipaws powered nail file for Christmas. It is basically a Dremel tool with a replaceable round Emery sandpaper band. I had doubts about this device especially knowing how their saturated marketing campaigns have become rather annoying. I swore to never buy one of these after getting ten emails a day about them for months.

Well, after some use, I am here to say that the device does work. You put the nail into a hole and it hits the spinning sandpaper wheel. The magic with this device is the plastic cap guard which makes it almost impossible to injure anything while using this so it becomes rather easy to hold the paw with one hand and the tool with the other and sand away.

As long as your animal is not afraid of the light motor sound or of a paw being held, they wont notice a thing. My dog was yawning whilst I gave him the pedicure.

The thing is not super powerful or anything like that, but all in all, nail trimming is quicker and less annoying for me and much less painful for the animal. You can easily do a small buff weekly and slowly make a previously ungroomed nail become shorter. Plus, there are never any splintering ends since it is simply sanding and not cutting.

I think this will become my preference for trimming nails as it is much easier for me to use and I do not expect to cause any pain with the tool and it leaves the nail in a healthier state over a pressure cutting tool.

Buy one and give it a try, they arent expensive.

 Monday 12/29

Well, I caught 'em at it. When I went into the library this morning everyone was awake; I wasn't sure at first about the brothers because I only saw one, he was hanging on the top of the cage, and then I saw two tails! Kioko was mounted on Washi, I could see someone's little red genitalia (probably Kioko's). No one seemed to be in any distress at all, so I left them at it. Got Shikoni, he came right onto my hand and we went to play.

He's gotten pretty adventurous! His new game is to glide from my knee onto the sink, scurry across the counter and jump to the door; up the towels and back down; run across the floor, up my leg, onto the curtains; back down onto me ... and repeat. He must have done it twenty times. I like that he's getting so much good exercise and having fun, you can tell; he finally got tired and I took him home and gave him a mealie. The other two were in their pouch; I left them there. I checked on them a few minutes ago; both were eating. One's on the wheel now, I can hear it rattling.

Have to clean cages today. They got shrimp last night, so there'll be a nice fishy smell. I have some clean fleeces and a corner hammock; no clean pouches, we'll see where everyone sleeps and I'll wash what's available.

Dinner last night: shrimp, black and blue berries, spring mix, a few radish slices, snow peas and carrots. Also strawberry yogurt. I'll get some other flavors today, I need some to take to work for breakfasts. Sure wish we had more grocery stores; there are only a few flavors available without artificial sweeteners. Makes me crazy that both grocery chains have essentially the same thing, for all the groceries; there's just not a lot of variety around here.

I'm giving them V-8 Fusion about every three days, diluted half-and-half with water. It's a big hit! It's been peach-mango. There's strawberry-banana, but I know I won't like that, and since I also have to drink the stuff, it's gotta be something acceptible to me.

I found a website that gives a very detailed nutrient analysis of (so far) every food I've wondered about. It's WHFoods.com. Click through three screens, and up comes the chart with everything: trace minerals, vitamins, fats, amino acids, other components. I was surprised to discover that many of the meats (like chicken and shrimp) are lower in calcium than phosphorus; I wonder if this is also something we need to track, like we do the vegetable kingdom. Even eggs: 22:76 mg. I don't know, before long we'll only be giving them sesame seeds and molasses! Wonder what the ratios are for crickets and mealies ...
