 Received 6+4 handovers this week

Posted by: kazko
-----
We picked up some handover sugars from San Antonio and Austin areas this week while on a roadtrip.

1. JP is a 1 year old male received from Yolanda in San Antonio. He was handed over by his keeper Jessica and her dad. Jessica was very sad to see him go. He came with the largest cage per animal and supplies. I think he was loved and will be missed.
2. 4 adults were received from Melissa in Kyle. Both females are with pouch and it looks like 2 each. Chico is the dad, Lucky is the son, Kimmie and Cookie are the two females, prolly one of them a daughter of Chico’s, but that is a guess. They came with supplies and Leadbeaters mix items. Hence forth they will be referred to as the Sugar Shack family.
3. Kairi is a single female about 1 year old received from Josh in Austin. She came in an extremely tiny cage and was a biter.

Pican's baby girl is a backflipper

Pican’s baby girls are very spirited. One of them will run on the stealth, turn around and ride it and begin doing backflips over and over with increasing speed. It is a fantastic site to see.

 Rehomed the girl rescue today

Posted by: kazko
-----
I rehomed the girl rescue today to Todd in Allen. She had been causing a lot of fighting between the boys so it made sense to let her go. I think Hunter has taken to big guy and hopefully he wont miss her.

 Rehomed the two boys today

I merged blind boy and girl with Big Guy and Little guy. They are doing fine but Blindy tends to sleep and keep to himself. I rehomed the other two boys to a nice couple from Frisco.

Received rescues from Living Materials Center

Posted by: kazko
-----
I received two cages of rescues today from Jim Dunlap at the Plano Living Materials Center . Cage1 had two boys and cage2 had a neutered boy and girl. The boy turned out to be blind and somewhat of a runt. I have no doubt that he was sold as a "special" sugar glider with blue eyes. Standard flea market fare.

I am very glad to have removed these animals from the shelter. They keep all of the animals in one large warehouse type of room which is ok except that the large birds and primates will randomly SCREEEEEECH a shrill sound that will scare the ghost out of an unsuspecting visitor. These tiny animals have been tormented endlessly by this I am sure.

Big guy had his tail amputated

Posted by: kazko
-----
Both boys are doing fine from their neuters. I took Big Guy in today to have his tail amputated. I think Buddy broke it when they tussled a few days earlier through the cage walls and it finally dried up. He has been gnawing at it since and it looked horrible. I partook in the procedure and snapped a few photos.

Neuters for Buddy and Big Guy

Posted by: kazko
-----
Took Buddy and Big Guy in today for their scheduled neuters. They came home with their ecollars on. I left Buddy’s on overnight to make sure he wouldn’t touch himself since he was so young, but Big Guy went straight to cuddlin with Lil guy so he was fine.

I got some photos:

 Baby Hazel

Posted by: kazko
-----
Baby Hazel is growing quickly. I never find her nursing anymore although she must be, and she is starting to want to chew on things. I think she may have even started eating some stuff. Pican has been chattering and shaking the last few nights and I think it is because she has more in pouch that are attached to nipples and it is causing her discomfort. It is probably about time to get Buddy neutered. I am taking the boys in to be neutered on 3/26.

 Mickey and Minnie are dead

Posted by: kazko
-----
I was just informed after my own query that Mickey and Minnie and family are dead. I didn’t like Minnie much but I did respect her especially after she was able to pair with Mickey and have offspring. Mickey was a sweetheart and I might liked to have kept him for myself. I will take this as an affirmation that not all families are able to take care of sugar gliders and I should be much more picky as to who I give one to. Perhaps this is why rescues always have too many animals… How can you adopt out an animal in good conscience knowing that there is a 50% chance that the family will kill it.

quote:
Terry:
Max had a few of his friends spend the night and one of them got up during the night and took Mickey out and did not put him back in the cage. I found him dead the next morning. Minnie and the babies were doing fine for two days; but after that they all died and I have no idea why. They had plenty of food and water and seemed healthy. I had been handling the babies and they seemed to be growing. Max and I were heartbroken. Happy for you that Buddy finally got his act together.

 Baby Hazel opened her eyes

Posted by: kazko
-----
Baby Hazel finished opening both eyes tonight. I am taking lots of pics! I am looking in to getting the boys neutered. It will reduce marking and smell, it might calm Buddy down a bit and it might let me eventually merge the two boys in with the new family. If not, I may let them go to a new home and allow Pican and Buddy to mate again. A twist is that the boys are not from Traders Village which means that they might be a better breeding stock than Buddy. What to do… I just want to keep a single cage with a colony, nothing more.
