 A Quick Hello! :)

Posted by: RACHEL.BURNS
-----
I have been reading the forums for the last two weeks and realized that we haven't been properly introduced! Hello, my name is Rachel :)
Brief(ish) story: I was born in Oregon, have lived in Alaska (twice), Oregon (twice), Washington, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Arizona, Tennessee (twice - also, I claim this as my home), South Carolina, South Korea, and Colorado (my current residence). "Why?" you may ask - military. Born into it, raised in it, joined it, then married it... that may have sounded weird. Father was Army, I grew up and joined the Army, met my husband in Korea (who was in the Army), was medically discharged, and married him shortly after. My super awesome amazing husband cooks like no other - did I mention he recently kicked cancer's sorry keister? We have the most low-maintenance kid on the continent who has cried all of four times in her life. She has recently become mobile (cue the horror music) and it is so fun chasing her all day. We have a 35-pound dog named Kate (after a character in our favorite show, Castle).
My husband and I were recently told due to the chemo our only options for growing our family are fertility treatments or adoption, and since fertility treatments are risky and expensive, and it is horrible to find an adoption agency that is both military AND cancer friendly (and did I mention it's REALLY expensive?), we are choosing to stick with fur babies. We have wanted this for a while, and now that I can stay home and he will be home for quite a while longer it is a more realistic option.
Things to know about me: Wanna see a picture of me? Grab a dictionary and look up the word "awesome" - then roll back a little till you find "a$$" and I'll be there. :D Seriously, I'm a fairly easy-going person. My husband and I are Buddhist so very few things get to me. One quick way to do it - harm through blatant stupidity/negligence. I cannot stand unnecessary violence, and there is only one scenario where it's okay to hurt a kid or animal: zombie apocalypse. Other than that, I become a very bad Buddhist when I hear of harm to animals (or kids).
I respect everyone's freedom of speech (I am proud to say I once defended it and my husband still does) and I wish people would respect it enough to use it more intelligently (petty arguments rather than uplifting/intelligent conversation to better the world).
I am very new to the glider community (until about a month ago I didn't even know a community existed! I just liked to read facts on the sugar gliders themselves - I'm amazed I didn't run across this site sooner), and I am very eager to learn from the experts :) Please feel free to share your stories (good and bad), lessons learned, and general tips on glider care. I hope to be a lifelong member of this wonderful community.
OH, one more thing - HOW I became interested in gliders. When I was seven, we had a loss in the family and my sisters and I were very down. My dad had a friend from his recruiting station come see us and he brought a special little friend of his - a glider! It was the first one I had ever laid eyes on. His name was Pip. I specifically remember my dad telling me that morning that his friend would be over, but couldn't come till the evening because the "friend" he was bringing was nocturnal. The friend explained bright sunlight would hurt Pip's eyes, and Pip liked to stay up and play at night. We got to feed him fruit pieces and watch him glide from my dad's shoulder back to his owner. It was amazing. The memory has never left me. Only recently did I see another one - those vile PPP jerks came to my mall. I'd never even HEARD of this group and there was something shady about them. My dad's friend's words kept playing in my head: "He likes to sleep during the day - the sun burns his little eyes." I am not am impulse buyer so I came home and did some digging - and found you guys! Thank goodness, too. This has been so educational and I hope to keep growing my (limited) knowledge through this group. Also, I found someone on here who will have joeys OOP I should be meeting with soon. YAY! I get to be a mommy (again) soon!

 State Fair of Texas 2012

We went to the State Fair today. It was pleasant and I had a good time. We saw the bird show as usual. The "Dominator" tornado chaser car was there parked under a tree. But our focus was on food. We got one of everything deep fried that we thought we could stomach and shared it. All of the "winners" were terrible and my favorite out of all the things we tried wasnt even on ANY list anywhere, it was the deep fried pepperoni pizza. It was fabulous!

 An Introduction.

Hi! I've been around the forums as a lurker for a while, and I should probably come out of the woodworks and introduce myself!

As you can amuse from my username, my name is Sami. :) For a really long time I refused to get into sugar gliders, as adorable and fascinating they were. I was told they their were extremely high maintenance and hard to take care of. I've raised, bred, handfed, and endlessly doted on everything from dogs, cats, rats, chinchillas, hedgehogs, rabbits, mice, and even the all allusive Kinkajou. Back in July I started to look into gliders after my mother's urging to how cool they were, and I wanted to know what my mother was trying to get into.

I was pleasantly surprised how easy they were to take care of. The first website I stumbled across, yes was the PPP care guide. I thought it was a LITTLE too good to be true. However, being the polished and very good researcher I am, I prefer looking into forums such as this, and to be honest once I came in I never left. This place has become my bible for glider care!

I got my first glider from a petstore about.... two hours from me. I had three gliders coming to me; it was arranged from a breeder that I would get two girls. One was 4 months, the other just OOP. The glider from the store was a little male, just 9 weeks old. He was cute, curious, despite being a little crabby. However, not even 24 hours after I got him, he died on me due to a wound on the outside of his right wrist. I was devastated and I felt like a terrible glider mommy. :( I didn't know that he had a wound, and the local vet just told me to give him wound care, rinsing it with a saline rinse 2x's a day and to put neosporin on it. His little monster hand was all puffy, and I've affectionately called him Hulk. Lol!

We fought with the store for a replacement, their guarantee covered 3 days, and 24 hours was DEFINITELY under those 3 days. They claimed it was MY fault, and that they would reduce it half price. This is also the same place that claims that sugar gliders don't have bones, that their bodies are made up of completely cartilage(I haven't found scientific evidence to support this, so I think that's a load of bull). I cut my losses of $250 and got my female a week or so later.

This little female is just too much.

She discovered my conure's hanging playstand.

She came to me named Kaluha, at 4 months, but once I get her 8 week old sister this friday, I think I'm going to be renaming them to something more appealing to me. He has bonded to me in such a way that she calls to me every night at the same time that I've affetionately called, "food time." I take her from her cage and walk downstairs to the kitchen, where we pick out her fruit for the night, as well as her daily liquid diet. Just tonight she decided to steal a grape off the counter and run off with it and hid in my hair while she ate it!

She goes everywhere with me in her bonding pouch. Class, babysitting, store, or even just to sit with me on my computer, if I offer her the pouch, she'll gladly run in as quick as possible.

I'm very happy I have gotten to take care of one of these creatures, and I just CAN'T WAIT to get more!!

 Introducing a glider buddy

My husband and I recently adopted a sweet un-neautered male glider, Grizzly Bear. We call him Grizzles for short. We got him checked out by our vet, built him a nice big home, and have spent lots of time with him so he got comfy with us (he's sleeping under my shirt as I type this :)). Now that we feel he is well adjusted we were thinking about getting another glider since they live in colonies typically. Just wanted to reach out for advice on the topic because 1. We don't want to get a female because we don't want to breed them and we really don't want to fix him if we don't have to. 2. He has been by himself most of his life. He is about 5 years old and the couple we adopted him from had him for two years as an only glider and I believe he was an only glider before that too. From reading posts on here I know it can be tricky to introduce other males due to dominance. Just really torn about the whole situation because I would love for him to have a companion, but not sure if he would want that.

 new owner. priscilla price diet?

I am the new owner of a recently abandoned two year old girl (Owner went off to college and couldn't take her). I have always wanted one so now I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I got her from a local exotic pet store. The people there are incredibly knowledgeable so I don't doubt what they've told me. I have the glider cereal and the monkey bisquits and two other dry pellet things to be used in small amounts alongside with her fruits/vegitables everyday. I made a batch of priscilla price's diet and I just used the calcium/vitamin suppliment that Pet's and Reptiles Select gave me instead of buying Priscilla's. And a few mealworms as bonding treats. She seems to be happy and we are working on the bonding process. I hold her all day in the pouch and when she chirps at me at night I get up and sit by her cage for an hour. That usually makes her stop talking so much:) She is fantastic and I love her. Named her Calypso by the way. Also gonna go back and get some Gliderade from that store this weekend. Am I doing things right? I could really use a bigger cage though. Taller. If anyone has an extra to give away or knows of someone who does can you email me? Thanks!

Help me! I have no idea what to feed my sugar glider.

Every night I feed my sugar glider a green bean, a corn, pea, carrot, mango, banana, and strawberry. I try not to feed her so much because the breeder i bought her from said that their stomachs are only as big as your thumb nail. I just ran out of pellets that the breeder gave me and have no idea where to order any more from. I also heard of things to buy such as calcium but have no idea where to get it and what to do with it. All help is appreciated!

 Nail Clipping 101

Well, my babies claws were already so long when I got them that they were snagging on the fleece set in their cage. With a lot of help and guidance from Kruegon I finally managed to get them done with minimal injury. Two accidental nicks, one per glider. Thankfully the little cuts clotted quickly and they seem ok now. Hopefully things will be smooth sailing from here on out with the beginning of the bonding process. Glad that's over with.
