Feb 17, 2012 Notes about SSG HPW Posted by: CountrynCraftyToday I made the SSG HPW meal plan using the SSG Fruit & Veggie Mix 1. First off it made a LOT more then I expected. I bought 6 ice cub trays today with 16 spaces each which equals 96; each cube has 1 Tbs of the mix & 3/4 tsp HPW. According to their feeding directions 1 glider should get 2 cubs. Anyway all of the spots were filled & I also used my baby bullet thing to make another few & I still have over half left. I'm going to have to let the first set freeze then put in the next set. According to my calculations, feeding 2 spots per day to just him would last me about 96 days! But since in 17 days I will be getting the females I figure it'll last about 36 days-which is fine. I have also decided to make a batch of SSG Fruit Smoothie 2 & Veggie Relish 2, but I might not make them into actual smoothies-reason below. I want to make a diff batch(s) to give variety-I'd hate eating the same food every day so they prob do too. If All the batches do the same amount I'm looking at enough food for a total of 56 days. I also started to make the dining hall today to deter any messes, but it looks like I shouldnt worry about it tonight because he won't eat it! Idk if its because its smooth or because its not food he's ever had (bought from PPP so all he's had is pellets). I tried putting yogies in it ("sprinkled" on top), which he ate, but he hasnt touched the rest. He's also drinking more water, but other then that he's acting normal. However, I simply can't afford to switch feeds & the ingrediants weren't cheap today by any means so at this point idk what to do.well, I had to get up extra early yhis morning due to DD having a check up so I'm loggin.
Feb 16, 2012 Opening Entry Posted by: JerrycnhSo, I'm going to document my thoughts and feelings about my glider (hopefully soon-to-be gliderS) and how it's going, so that I can look back at it someday and remember how silly I was. ;) For anyone reading who didn't get to see my intro posts to the forum, I got my baby from PPP at a mall outlet on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. I had no idea what I was getting into but I wasn't /completely/ impulsive, I just apparently had too much faith in the internet. :) I figured I'd accept what I was told at the point of sale and expound on my internet knowledge once I got her home. Whereupon I have discovered that, at least on the topic of sugar gliders, there is definitely more than one "truth" out there online. :) I have since read PPP's instructions and talked to the various forumers here, absorbed the variety of opinions out there, and decided on the "opening approach" that I'm going to take with my baby. Issue #1: Companionship. Winning Faction: The Forum. I'm completely convinced that my baby needs a playmate more than any other possible toy, and I've made finding a second sugar glider my top priority. Not much luck so far because I'm still recovering financially from getting her, but I'm going to get one as soon as possible. Will probably need another cage because I've heard a couple of people (surprisingly few forumers have weighed in on this actually) mention the need for a quarantine/adjustment period, but I HIGHLY doubt that I'll be doing a full 30 day quarantine. I'll be at least making attempts to get them to interact after 7 days and, if that doesn't work, then after 14 days, etc, once a week until I'm sure they're okay with each other. I'm also planning on "switching" them from cage to cage on a daily basis, I have a theory that so much time around each others' scent might accelerate their acceptance of each other. Will post on that experiment as I do it. :) Issue #2: Diet. Winning Faction: Neither. I'm not convinced that pellets are worthless, nor do I believe anymore that they are God's gift to gliders. Today I tried the HPW ice cube thing over Banana Nut Cheerios instead of pellets, and Serenity looked like she was in heaven. :) I also decided that I agree with forumers that exposing her to variety in food now rather than waiting will help keep her from being a picky eater, so I gave her some honeydew last night (also enjoyed immensely by her) and I'll give her some kiwi with vitamin stuff tonight. As an interesting side effect, this glider is going to wind up being good for ME because I find myself eating some of whatever she eats, so my own fruit/vegetable intake is increasing, and oddly, while I would NEVER be willing to make a weekly trip to the grocery store for myself, there's something about doing it for Serenity that makes it seem more fun. :) I think I'm going to go 50/50 on fruits/veges and protein for now. Haven't decided on her protein source yet, I like the idea of using something more "human" than the HPW mix (IE eggs/chicken). As far as water goes, I'm going to continue to mix water with something tasty (gatorade, juices, etc) and change it every three days. Not often enough by some standards here, but then I'm sure those same people would be appalled to learn that I only shower every three days myself. :P I'm not holding Serenity to a hygenical standard higher or lower than then the one I hold myself to. Issue #3: Handling. Winning Faction: PPP. I think their approach to having "control" of the animal through the Mendenhall grip and the tunneling stuff is right on, the forumers in general don't seem to give their babies enough credit for resilience. What PPP says makes sense - these are pouch animals, used to being squished very tightly in mama's pouch, even with another joey. And, I picked Serenity because she was the one literally buried under her cagemates with just her head sticking out and seemed to accept that with a docile attitude. I think it's important to establish myself as her "alpha", and handling her with a little firmness is the way to go for this. Issue #4: Interaction with Other Animals. Winning Faction: The Forum (mostly). Gone are the fantasies of my glider and cats gathering over a bowl of spaghettios like they showed in the demo. My cat and my glider will never be in the same room without me, and if they're in the same room with me, then the glider will be safely in it's cage, in my hand or in my pocket, and I will be sure to keep a minimum 2 feet distance between cat and glider at all times. This falls short of the Forum's "OMG NEVER IN THE SAME ROOM" imperative, which I believe to be grossly overprotective (although admittedly, it's cage only until she's at least 12 weeks old), but it's certainly a lot more in line with their philosophy than PPP's. Issue #5: The Unknown. Well, one thing's for sure, I know a LOT more than I did when I took her home. :) I think documenting her daily life her for awhile might help with things that I have no clue about. This morning she did the cutest thing, she grabbed a cheerio while I was munching on my bowl of cheerios and we stared at each other while eating. :) I'm going to die from cute overload. Feb 16, 2012 Tent Posted by: jello737I recently got two new youngsters (usualy I get adult suggies from people who dont want them anymore) and I am having difficulty bonding with them. SO I got a small tent and set it up in thier room so I can sit in there with these guys. Im excited to see what happens and how long it will take for them to start trusting me. One of them will let me touch her on occasion when I feed her be usually she just runs. The second suggie I cant get near, and she lunges at me from the pouch. CANT WAIT for some progress :D looking forward to having 2 more cuddle buddies. Feb 16, 2012 Progress 2-16-12 Posted by: CountrynCraftyI am so excited about his progress! Yesterday he allowed me to pet him while he was in the cage (for the first time) for a minute & just now he took a his first treat from me-a yogie. He did crab at me, but he still took it! I think things are progressing pretty well, though I know we have a way to go before he's bonded enough to trust him on my shoulder. As soon as we move I'm getting my tent, but right now I can't get it out. I also got my HPW/bee pollen in today, but I ended up throwing the first batch out because I had no way to make it into 1tsp cubes as I forgot we didn't have any ice trays. Guess I will go again tomorrow...I burnt the eggs anyway (cooked in the pan with no butter or oil):P-going to try the microwave tomorrow too. I didn't know about this journal thing , so I will add that we made a 2ftwx5fthx2ftd cage for him on Monday and that in a lil over two weeks I am going to adopt 3 more from Cora. They are females named Chardonnay, Sangria, & Brandy. I have decided to change his name since he doean't know it yet; it used to be MacGyver (Mac) now I can't decide between Cabernet/Taxi cab (Cab) and Merlot. Feb 9, 2012 The new cage arrived! Posted by: sierranevadaKRue's new cage arrived yesterday! He's finally out of that little one. Now he has a bigger place to run around and I won't feel so bad if I have to go somewhere that isn't glider friendly. The cage is almost 5 feet tall and it's very wide and deep! Every time I walk into my room, I get so excited. Right now he only has a few toys and accessories. I definitely need to look into getting a cage set or something like that. I am so happy! Soon I need to work on getting him a friend! Feb 8, 2012 Hawaiian rescue update Posted by: PaaniSorry if anyone has been looking for news on Laki and Lele ... things have been a bit hectic. At last posting, I'd tried to intro them to my other two gliders, Anson and Judah, a bit too hurriedly. I was hoping they could enjoy the large six foot cage along with Anson and Judah and get out of the smaller cage. Alas, not onliy did that intro not work out but it doesn't look good for the future. Laki is pretty mellow but Lele still freaks and crabs at just about anything. Judah still goes into maximum scent mode every now and then at the part of his cage closest to Laki and Lele's cage. I replaced the Wodent Wheel in Laki & Lele's cage with a Stealth. Laki loves running on it, Lele rides once in a while. They enjoy bell peppers and Asian pears but really go nuts for peas. I put a mix of fruit and veggies in the cage with the peas buried underneath (still frozen) and saw Anson come out of the pouch and start digging until he got to the peas. Frozen or not, he went to town on those peas! About the only thing that competes with peas is fresh ripe mango -- haven't had both on the same night so not sure which one they want more. They DO love their LGRS Suggie Soup -- they'll dig and nibble at it even while still frozen. Tent times have gotten better -- they still don't want to be held or even touched but don't mind using me as a tree. They've gotten quite good at holding onto PVC pipe even without a covering so I'm looking at making some more climbing structures with PVC. I was really hoping to get the pairs to bond together but at this point I'm thinking I should build or buy another large flight cage so neither pair has to feel cramped. Feb 7, 2012 Introduction/ A little background on my Rue Posted by: sierranevadaK Hey everyone! My name is Sierra and I am still new to sugar gliders. I got my little glider about 7 weeks ago, a little before Christmas. My boyfriend's little brother wanted one and, without knowing anything about them, his mom went and bought one from a local breeder. My boyfriend's mother has a thing that I like to call CPPD (compulsive pet purchasing disorder). She buys dogs, cats, geckos, iguanas, and other animals on impulse, gets tired of them after a few months, and then she's on craig's list putting them up for sale. It's heartbreaking. My boyfriend and I don't like her activites in any way, but this time there was one little plus to her impulsive buy. I was sitting in their living room when she brought home a little sugar glider that they named Dexter. He was tiny but had the loudest noise. Over the next week and a half, I came to their house every night to visit the sugar glider. They had wanted him so badly, but now he barely got attention. He sat in a sock hat and crabbed at everyone. He was in a bright, fluorescent dining room. It was loud. There were always people talking, yelling, dogs barking, and the baby crying. I figured Dexter was scared to death. Every night he got fed a slice of apple, some dry staple food, a few grapes, and corn. I felt so bad for the little guy. Nobody ever touched him or played with him, except for me. He crabbed at everyone (except me) and they were afraid of his "mean growl". After only less than two weeks, he was back onto craig's list. Being an animal lover, I, myself, made an impulse buy. But with this "impulse buy" of mine I knew that this sugar glider would have a better home with me, a forever home. I had a common knowledge about animals, including sugar gliders. They offered to let me have him for 150 dollars, plus cage and accesories. He came home to me in a cage barely two feet tall. I went to Walmart and bought all the fruits and vegetables that I could find. I went to all of the petstores in town to get anything that I needed. I renamed him Rue and now I have a very curious, healthy, excited, and bonded sugar glider. So here we are today! I have my sugar glider and I am going to give him a forever home. I'm learning more and more about gliders every day and I'm taking this one step at a time, but I'm just so happy to give this guy another chance. I'm happy to have him! Feb 3, 2012 Testing the Waters - HPW Posted by: sillydasha When I got home from class yesterday, a package was waiting for me in my room! Finally I received the HPW powder, along with American Bee Pollen. Right away I ran to the market to buy the other ingredients that was necessary for making the SSG Fruit/Veggie mix. Finding the bok choy, butternut squash, papaya, and a few other items did not take much time, but actually making everything took way longer than I expected! Thankfully my brother was around and was nice enough to help me with the entire process. I also was not expecting how big of a batch that it made! Holy moly. I wish we had taken a picture of the huge bowl we used. We filled two containers and three ice cube trays full of just the fruit/vegetable mix. At that point, my entire family had their fingers crossed, hoping Dasha would like her new diet. If she didn't- what the heck were we going to do with all those fruits and vegetables?! When I filled her bowl, she was very hesitant. At first she just sniffed and sniffed. But then she got comfy and began to eat the HPW. She didn't go near the fruits and vegetables though. This was a disappointment, but when I came home a few hours later, I saw that the HPW was completely gone, and it looked like she tested the waters with the fruits and veggies. When I woke up, her bowl was completely empty! A success! :) She either liked it, or she didn't want to starve. I'm hoping it's the first one, because we have like a four month supply of the stuff. What fruits and vegetables do your gliders go nuts for?Feb 2, 2012 Outraged!! Posted by: H.peninger3 Yesterday I called my vet to have a check up for my new little boy and my female, the vet asked how old my babied were and I told him that Harlee was 6 months and that I'd have to call the breeder to find the age of my male. I was under the impression by the breeder that he was 8-10 weeks. Oh boy did I get a suprise!! The baby is only 6 weeks old!!!! I'm extremely pissed off!!! I cannot believe that breeder told me he was 8-10 weeks just to sell the poor baby!! He lied to me and took that innocent baby away from is mommy way way too early!!!! If I would have known his true age before I got him there is NO way I would have gotten him! I cannot believe this. I already knew it was kinda young at 8-10 weeks but the breeder said he was weaned and everything. I'm outraged! He is a big suggie so it didn't really cross my mind, but now it makes scence why he wouldn't eat the first night and acts the way he does to my female!! That is cruel to take a baby that early from its mommy and the lie to the person your selling it too!!! Well guess what buddy I caught u and I'm gonna make sure I spread the word to people in the area not to buy ur gliders. Thankfully I have a wonderful female and some experience (little but I'm in the medical field so I have good scence about taking care of thing) if I would have known about that babies age I wouldn't have gotten him but I guess it's better that I ended up with him instead of someone with no experience. He probably would have died! I just can't believe it!! Feb 1, 2012 everyday is a new day Posted by: H.peninger3Hello everyone! I have 2 gliders: Harlee(almost 6 months oop, female) and Shadow(8-10 week oop, male). I adopted harlee in december and shadow on the 29th of january. i believe shadow was pulled too early from him mommy by the way he acts around harlee, but i was unaware of that until we got him home. He has taken to harlee very well and she has in a way accepted him as her own baby. Everyday is a new adventure for the two. At first he wasnt much interested in food, and i believe that it was a result of being scared in the new environment and because he is so young and not used to regular food. anyway it has been a process but he is eating soo good now and actually climbs in the bowl to chow down. Well today he discovered the cage water bottle lol i know that sounds crazy and you are thinking "well how was he drinking then?"... our bottle drips and i occasionally keep a small bowl under the spout, he has been drinking out of the bowl. i was afraid he was going to make it a habit about drinking from a bowl until i took it from the cage and he just walked over to the spout and started drinking like he had been doing it all along..lol guess i underestimated my baby boy! By the way i posted new pics on my profile, go check out my babies! have a great night everyone! Harlee&Shadow mommy Jan 30, 2012 So tired... Posted by: Efula32Today I cleaned the girl's cage all by myself today. Usually I have help, but I didn't today. I managed to pull a muscle in my back and neck. Almost gauged a whole in the wall trying to put the darn thing back onto the stand. i have to say that it is alot of work for one person. It didn't help that I woke up late, and that put alot of pressure to get it all done before it's feeding time. I am exhausted and I still have to study for my quiz and finish my homework...and don't even get me started on my kitchen! :/ Jan 25, 2012 Catwoman climbed on my arm last night!! Posted by: RChurchWe had some friends over for dinner last night & we heard that the babies were out. Naturally, our friends wanted to see, too, so I took them to our bedroom where we keep them and as I offered a handful of sunflower seeds for Catwoman to take, she opted instead to climb up my arm!!! This happened twice last night so I know it's not a fluke; that she actually trusts and likes me enough to climb on me. :) I am SO HAPPY!
