Mar 1, 2012 New gliders coming! Posted by: JerrycnhI have 2 new babies coming into my life tomorrow night! I finally got lucky with Craigslist, 2 9 month old greys, one male and one female, plus cage and supplies for $450. I thought about asking the forumers what to look for in inspecting these guys, but then I decided there's no point - if they're in good condition, I'll take them because they're in good condition, and if they're sad or sickly or troublesome, I'll take them anyway just to try to improve their living conditions. :) So they're mine either way. I'll just have to alert my forum support group once I have them if I run into anything unusual with them. I'm not going to rename them, I wouldn't rename a human child I adopted so there's no reason to rename the gliders. :) So part of the fun will be finding out what their names are when I'm introduced to them. I'm also going to bring along something scented to go in the bonding pouch with them for the ride home. I promised their current owners that I would keep them updated with blogs and pictures, and so I shall - thanks to the journal here. :) I think that'll be nice for them, certainly if I ever gave up Serenity for some reason I'd want to hear how she was doing from time to time, maybe see a cute picture. The funny part is, since I'm getting basically teenager gliders, I'm expecting a little bit of rebelliousness from them. ;) Since they're coming with their own cage, I will actually do the short period of quarantine/item swapping recommended to help my new baby get accustomed to her new colony and vice versa. Wikipedia said "a dominant male will mark his territory and members of the group with saliva and a scent produced by seperate glands on the forehead and chest, intruders who lack the appropriate scent marking are expelled violently" :P I don't want my little girl "expelled violently"! :P
Feb 28, 2012 Tents and Kiwis Posted by: JerrycnhWell, Serenity taught me something today - Kiwis and her don't get along. First day I fed her kiwi, she had diarrhea the next day, which was scary - for a few seconds there I was all ticked at the people who told me to vary her diet, and swore to go back to pellets and cantaloupe only - and sure enough, as soon as I switched back the diarrhea went away and all was good. But I've given her a few other things over the last two weeks and there's been no diarrhea, so I decided yesterday, "Okay, I'll give her kiwi again tonight, if she has diarrhea tomorrow then I know it's kiwis specifically that don't work for her." And this morning, she had diarrhea again, so... oh well, no kiwi for her. Shame, it's such an awesome fruit. Anyway, she's got her mealies and pellets and HPW mix, which she was so eager for last night that she didn't even wait for the ice cube to melt, she started eating the cube like a lollipop. :) We've had tent time twice now. She doesn't really seem to climb the tent, just run along the ground and climb me. :) I bring her wheel in with us so she has something else to do, and music or iPad for me. She seems happy, she gets very frisky especially in the early morning (like around now) where she really wants to run and jump and play. She's a little off what I'd expect for nocturnal, seems like she sleeps from 10AM-10PM. :) Oh, yesterday I picked her up while she was asleep and put her in my pocket and she didn't even wake up. :) Still no luck finding her glider playmates. But I'm searching daily. Feb 27, 2012 My new glider: Bella Lou Posted by: FallonAndrea I've only had my sugar glider, Bella, since Febuary 19th. I got her as a birthday present to me! Haha. She's 3 months old and is the cutest pet I've ever owned! I've already got her spoiled and I'm in love with that cute face of hers! At first I was scarred of her biting, but now that I've felt her bites, it's no big deal. Although I'm still a bit frightened I'm going to hurt her accidentally when I go to pick her up. Each day she gets used to me a little bit more, and the same goes for me with her. I left her cage door open and let her venture her way out of her cage. But it took an hour and a half to get her back inside! Haha. She's a sneaky little fella. I managed to get her into her exercise ball, which is progress at least. I'm used to all the racket she makes at night, and her barking-- which is so so cute!! She's LOVES those big popcicle sticks people use for arts and crafts. I love how she uses her little paws for everything, it's adorable. She reminds me so much of a monkey! Her favorite snack is apples. She likes to open easter eggs! (Because she's learned there's usually treats in them for her to find.) Goodness, I've never been attatched to any animal like her! Feb 26, 2012 just a story Posted by: TONYA1W1so for the first time today my glider (sugar babe) come out of her pouch and in my shirt. thats a good sign to be i think its funny i was tring to get her out of her pouch she didnt want to come so i was doing her food clean water putting food in the cage all that good stuff well little mama runs out her pouch and up my shirt then inside her nails hurt but i sucked it up now she is in my arm just sitting there till i move a little bit then them nails sure digs in my skin owell the price i pay to her her love lol....ps she dont like no one else i think that is to funny...ttyl Feb 24, 2012 My First Week Posted by: TONYA1W1Ok so monday i got my first sugar glider and i have been holding her in her bonding pouch 4-5 hours a day and if i leave the house i take her with me. i think that is a good thing, she still dont come to me unless i have something to give her but i have t meet her like 80% of the way i hope this is a great sign that we will become best buddy.i still cant hold her unless she is in something i think its because she is still scared but she does lay in my shirt and sleep that is post to be a good sign too.i am looking for a tall cage her and hope to find one soon i dont thik the one she has is good one. Feb 23, 2012 The Beginnings of a Bond Posted by: JerrycnhI think Serenity and I are continuing to hit it off well. :) I brought her her nightly fruit, some honeydew with vitamin sprinkles, and she just hopped onto my hand and literally ate out of my palm for a solid two minutes, then kinda fell into a routine of "hop on the wheel, run a bit, hop on Jerry's hand, eat honeydew, repeat ad infinitum" :) I feel like she really trusts me a lot now, though only when it's /just/ me - if I'm with someone else, she's still very skittish. Feb 23, 2012 Progress at Month Five Posted by: RChurchMonth five now and the babies seem to be making great progress! We've hidden their meal throughout their cage but we still have some food on their plate so they won't stress out with the change--not to mention we still have their HPW Complete on their sturdier divider plate. But this is forcing them to go forage. This turns out to be a great idea because now Batman is getting out of his pouch more and getting some much needed exercise. We've cheated with the Ball Pit recently and that has paid off. What I mean to say is, we've thrown in some meal worms in their Ball Pit and now even Batman goes in to investigate. He considers it another area for foraging. Currently trying to get them to use their fleece ropes and Catwoman was quick to pick up on it. We've clipped foraging cups to the fleece rope and put meal worms in there. We had a few nuts and yogies but that didn't seem to be enough incentive for them. The meal worms worked like a champ!! Batman is still a little afraid of heights but we're working with him. Every day, I see him climbing a little more confidently on the links, poking his little pink nose here and there, even climbing on the hammocks. He is also getting bolder with us. He doesn't go diving into his pouch anymore. He is less antisocial now that he & Catwoman have been cage mates for 4 months. And she is calmer, though it looks like she is putting on a little weight. I remember reading somewhere that white faced blondes do have that tendency. Well, thank goodness she loves her wheel as much as she does. I can't help but think that maybe it's not so much that she is putting on weight but that she has finally reached full maturity? She was 10 months old when we got her. I can't begin to describe to you the joy I feel of seeing them both stretch out their patagium from time to time. It especially warms my heart when Batman does it because it is so rare for him to be hanging upside down, enjoying a treat. (Hard to say who is really getting the treat, him or me.) I'd rather watch them play than watch TV. I'd rather play with them than my favorite video game. I'd rather spend money on them than get myself anything new. I guess this is what parenting must feel like. (I don't have any human kids of my own.) I love the fact that they let us pet them so much more now. Catwoman will actually sit in your hand for a few while she nibbles on her treat. Month five is wonderful! Feb 22, 2012 Wheelin' and Mealin' Posted by: JerrycnhSerenity LOVES. HER. WHEEL. :) Took her about 2 hours to figure out what to do with the thing, but once she got the hang of it, WOW, she's the giddiest glider in Glidonia. :) It's your standard Wodent Wheel, $20, not bad especially since I was able to get it right away and not wait for shipping. The pet store's food supplies all come from a company called Exotic Nutrition. I bought a pack of freeze dried mealworms (the label says "glider grubs"), which so far Serenity doesn't seem as interested in as her pellets and cantaloupe. But I haven't put any in her bowl yet - we'll see how she feels about them then. She spent most of the day with me on Sunday and on Tuesday, including when I went out to the pet store. Our bonding continues apace - she now eagerly runs across my hands without fear, though she doesn't really climb me unless she's out of her cage already. She's started trying to bite my fingernails (and I thought it was a bad enough habit when I do it, heehe) but when I make the 'tsssst' noise she backs off right away, so.. that's good. Hopefully there won't be a biting problem in the future. Feb 19, 2012 2-19-12 Posted by: CountrynCraftyLast night I was making the ball pit & scratched my eyeball, so I didn't write a journal, but I have lots to write about today. First in case I didn't journal it, lil' buddies name is Cab (for Cabernet/Taxi Cab & my son can say it :P ). Second he ate all of the fruit smoothie & veggie relish. Gave him the first mix I made again last night & he ate most of that too (only left a teaspoon!). As stated, scratched my eyeball last night and had to go to the dr/ER. They numbed my eye, dyed it, looked at it with a black light, washed it, then numbed it again. We finished the ball pit today lol. I met Cora and took her the fleece for my girls, I am going to go see them hopefully tomorro but def sometime this week. She said she gave them some of the fleece already; Brandy crabbled a little but the other two kept eating their mealies-yay! I also weighed Cab tonight and he only weighs 52 grams. I think that he's younger then the PPP told me. Trying to find more toys I can make him/figure out how to sew the fleece. Guess that's about it. I'm sooo ready to move and get settled in so that I can have everything ready for my girls; Also setting up his vet appointment (since it had to be canceled) for this wed. Feb 19, 2012 I'm only me, you get what you see. Posted by: KoziWell, I'm not even sure of what to say. I guess this is a warning label, of sorts. Yes, I can come across as mean. I won't use 'bad' words. :P But think of it this way.. I try to help out on here, via personal emails I get DAILY, and on multiple FB pages, one of which has 14 thousand viewers. I've gotten tired of sugar coating things. I'd rather be blunt/honest/straight forward and help the glider and have the owner's feelings a bit hurt than sugar coat things to save the owner a bit of butt hurt. If you can't handle that you probably shouldn't be on the internet. Honestly, too many of these people don't bother to do so much as ONE google search on gliders before diving in because they're oh-so cute. If hearing the straightforward truth hits home and hurts their feelings in the process, I'm fine with it. If they can't take honesty and get too scared and run and hide.. well why in the hell are they on a forum in the first place? This is the internet, it isn't candyland. Everyone isn't going to be sweet and sugary. You're opening yourself up to truth here, you should expect no less. Now -- For those of you who do bother to take the time to get to know me.. I know how you feel. I know those people who truly know me REALLY do like me. Some more than others.. I can be difficult, but we all have our quirks. Believe me, I truly do care about these little fuzzbutts. I love them and I HATE seeing the awful things that happen to them daily due to the misinformation out there, the impulse buyers, etc.. If you bother to get to know me.. you'll understand better. I am a true friend, I protect those close to me. But once crossed.. I can and WILL be vicious. I don't take kindly to slander, rumors or that kind of thing. If you EVER have a problem with me, hear something you aren't sure about, see something you worry about.. whatever the heck it is.. If you have a problem with me.. COME TO ME. I am MORE than happy to discuss it with you, expose the truth for what it is and be as honest as I can. I won't attack you, I won't slander you and I won't bash you. I'm more than happy to answer any questions whenever I can.. about sugar gliders.. or myself. The end! :P Feb 18, 2012 2-18-12 Posted by: CountrynCraftyTonight I started making the other 2 recipes I want to try for Cab (SSG Fruit Smoothie #2 & Veggie Relish #2) but of course my microwave blows out so I can't nuke the sweet potatoes for the veggie relish; Fruit Smoothie #2 is in the freezer though. Idk why but the fruit only made 3 and 1/2 ice cube trays worth. If I want this to last as long as the Fruit/Veggie mix from yesterday it looks like I'll need to make more. Tomorrow we are getting a new microwave so I'll be able to finish the Veggie relish then. Tonight I gave him part of the veggies I already had chopped and the Fruit Smoothie...hopefully it will be gone in the morning! I also finished making the dining hall besides decor-which I can add later. Hubby also let me get some more fleece so that I can make him/the females I'm soon to get another set of toys :D Tell ya'll in the morning how he eats tonight. Feb 17, 2012 A Morning Person Posted by: JerrycnhWell, TGIF, few more hours of work and then I'll have a full uninterrupted weekend with my baby. :) Can't wait! I hope I'm always this enthusiastic about her, can't imagine not being. :) So last night, I got home and, as I read from some people on here, picked up my suggie through the shirt she was bundled up in instead of digging her out first. That wake up did seem a little better for her. I gave her some kiwi with vitamin sprinkles, then picked her up and, as has become tradition for me, held her up to the water bottle so she could have a pre-play drink. She very rarely fails to take a drink when I put her up to the water bottle, and that's how I begin and end every session with her. I then let her run around on my hands for a few minutes before putting her in the bonding pouch, along with another piece of kiwi. Once in the pouch, I played some Skyrim on the PS3 while periodically petting her. She was good for three hours that way except for a little crabbing when I zipped open the pouch and peeked in at her. :) I then took her out for another few minutes of, well, what I wanted to be hand play, she decided she'd rather just perch on my thumb and stare at me. :) Went to sleep, woke up at 7:30 and, as usual, she was pretty much inside her food dish half-eating, half-playing with her food. Opened the cage, gave her a brief head rub and moved her to her water bottle, where she drank as if she'd forgotten it was there all night. ;) Then she left my hand and curled up in the shirt that I gave her for her cage. I cleaned the tray off, I didn't realize left over cantaloupe wedges dried up like that :P Maybe I should put a newspaper on the tray next time.
