I have had Maverick and Dakota in my shirt for about 4 hours now. Dakota woke up and is ready to play. My wife and I were petting her and playing and we noticed this lump on her face. Before u say it I already know vet visit. We will see if we can get her in tomorrow. What I was wondering is what it could be? She is eating and drinking without any problems. I have posted some pic's of the bump, any advise.

This is MrsKing (an older user)'s glider Scrat. (RIP Scrat)

He had an abcess. It required surgery and an eye amputation.

It certainly looks like a tooth abcess. With Scrat, if I remember correctly, his went on a little to long before going to the vet as she didnt have the funds for his surgery and the infection went into his eye.

Since this just came up, going to the vet tomorrow is the best thing to do. It will have to be drained, antibiotics given and possibly a tooth or two removed. Dont let this go very long - it will only get worse. INSIST the vet see her tomorrow. This is an emergency.

this would also be known as like lumpy jaw:

Lumpy Jaw (Impacted Salivary Gland)
Lumpy jaw, or actinomycosis is an infection primarily caused by the bacterium Actinomyces israelii.

Infection most often occurs in the face and neck region and is characterized by the presence of a slowly
enlarging, hard lump. It produces abscesses and can also infect the lungs and intestinal tract and other
parts of the body and can lead to gangrene and other complications. It is fatal if left untreated.

If I understand correctly it can be pretty common. They get a tooth abcess and sometimes if one of their cage mates gets into a fight with them a simple scratch or bite from another glider can cause an absess. But I believe tooth abcess is the most common. Most definately needs a vet check to possibly have it drained and antibiotics. Please keep up updated. If it gets to bad it can be like a human with an abcess tooth it can get into the blood stream or even get into the brain and cause death.

And, no - lumpy jaw is not caused by eating hard or dry foods.

Animals get infections just like we do. Sometimes there is no explanation for our infections either - they just happen. And they can happen very quickly. My oldest son, Doug, just experienced the same thing you poor little girl probably has. He went to bed one night and woke up the next morning with half his face swollen. Its painful and very nasty to deal with. Again, he has no idea how it happened. Fortunately, he didnt have to have a tooth removed.

If she is eating and drinking, at least the pain level isn't that high. Sounds like you caught it early which is always better for treatment and recovery. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hey Jerry here. Had our vet visit at 10:30 this am. Wife took Dakota and Maverick in. To my luck I am working a 48 hr. shift and today just happened to be the day I was working for someone else, so I couldn't take off and go. My wife told me the DR. could not believe how well they both behaved. He kept telling her that when he knows he has to see a glider he knows he is going to get bit and have a hard time. He was just amazed at how calm and tame they were. Maverick had clean bill of health. Dakota same but for the lump. He thought as some of us did abcess tooth. No it wasn't the teeth and mouth are great. He thinks it might of been and scratch that got infected. Wife sts he popped it like a zit, almost and sqeezed alot of puss out. She said a lot. Dakota just laid in his hand and let him do it. Wife states he cleaned it and recleaned it with different stuff and then put other blue stuff on it. He sent Dakota home with some antibiotic liquid, give one small drop a day and he wants to see her next Monday or sooner if we think it is not healing well. got call neeed to go

Ok I'm back.
At check out all the staff could not believe how calm they were and how Maverick and Dakota would let them hold them and pet them and no biting.
So far all is well, but I think she might have gotten it from Maverick. If he wants what she has he takes it and she lets him Maverick for past few days has had his face in her butt all the time. I think she might be in heat. So if something like is keeps happening he is getting neutered sooner than later. My wife is going to bring them to my work later to do the drop and let me check on her. It sure is nice to only live about 5 min. from work and about 5-8 min to the vet. This vet we have had used before, we have known him for about 23 years.
