I hate asking questions. I don't want anyone to get the feeling I didn't do any reading before I got my baby.
I have, I've actually done alot, but there's just some things I need answered.

Anyways....

I have Sassy's bonding pouch hanging up in her cage since I don't have a sleeping pouch right now.
I also have a pillow case on the bottom of her cage, with my boyfriend's hat on top of it so she can get use to our smell. She refused to sleep in the pouch. She only wants to sleep under the hat on top of the pillow case.
Is that normal and is it safe?

Please dont take the recent post to mean you cant ever ask questions. That is not the case at all and not what we meant.

It would be safer for her if you got her some well made sleeping pouches. You always need more than one so you have some to use while some are being washed.

Go to critterbin.com and you will find pouches - and lots of wonderful glider items! I shop there way to often.

Does the bonding pouch have a screen? I've noticed that two of my three gliders dislike the bonding pouch because of that screen.

Personally, I don't think anything she's doing is harmful or unusual. She just prefers it. Maybe because it's darker, or maybe because she's bonding to you both and wants to be near your scent.

I agree with Rita as well though... You need to get some well made fleece pouches. eBay is also a good place to look.

Or if you are good at sewing you could make your own out of fleece! There are also no sew projects, but I don't have that link, I'm sure someone else does, so hopefully they can post that link! My gliders seem to sleep in one pouch for a few days in a row and then sleep in another. If only they could talk and tell me why!

I'm getting sleeping pouches, don't worry. Just gotta wait for them.
I just wanted to know if this was OK while I waited to get her sleeping pouch.
I think its helping with the bonding process a lot to. We've only had her for about 24 hours now, lol, and she seems like she's starting to like us.

Scent is incredibly important to any nocturnal animal, so if she feels comfortable enough to sleep surrounded in the smell (I hope your boyfriend doesn't smell to bad! kidding!), then this shows that she will probably be comfortable falling asleep on you! Just make sure that she doesn't get stuck in any of the threads!

Last night we let her out and I had on a fleece jacket. One of those columbia jackets. She climbed right up on me and went straight for the pocket on the inside. She slept in there for a while to.

I'm thinking that the bonding process between me and her is going to be easy.
She has bit me a few times already tho. Well, more like a nibble didn't hurt or anything.

Now when my boyfriend goes to touch her, its a different story. She screams, not sure what the noise is called, at him. She hasn't tried to bite him tho. She also eventually gives in and let him petg her after a little temper tantrum.

There's about 7 people that live here and its fun to watch her reaction with other people.

I agree with what everyone is telling you. Please ask away wanting to improve for your glider is what we want! I honestly knew nothing about gliders except for what the mill breeders told me when I first seen them. We are all still learning. Noone expects people to know it all before they get their first glider none of us did. And I might add we still don't.

I just know that a lot of you suggest that people do their research before getting one. I just don't wanna seem like I didn't, because I have. There's just some things you don't know that you won't wanna know till you get one.

You know what? I was an impulse buyer and have always thought it was ridiculous to reprimand someone for not always doing their research first. There. I said it out loud! I was suckered by a smooth-talking, very convincing salesperson and had no reason not to believe them. After getting them home and finding those salepeople suddenly and conveniently not reachable, I got online to start researching just feeling like these guys couldn't really be that simple or more people would have them. Anyway, just wanted to put that out there. ASK AWAY.

The fact that you are on a site like this says you want to learn more. I think that is what truly matters! There were a lot of odd behaviors with my glider when I first got her that I was worried about, but it turns out that they were normal and it was only odd because I have had no other animal like them to compare to! Please continue to ask questions, and to share stories......and pictures!

That is soooo true!

I have an idea... take lots of fleece squares and sleep with them (some you sleep with, some your boyfriend) for scent. Then put all the blankies in the bonding pouch, so she can "nest" and cover the areas where there is light. This should take care of both issues until you get better pouches...

Also, please check very often on your baby when these foreign items are in the cage. It's probable that the bonding pouch is not 100% safe for unsupervised play, getting nails stuck, etc... and I'm not sure what your boyfriends' hat is made of either?

That's a really good idea. I'll have to try. We try to keep an eye on her at all times to make sure. We try our best. I should hopefully getting a some fleece tommorrow to make her a pouch and some toys.

I sleep with fleece on me and so does my husband and then we put it in their sleeping pouches. They love them and cuddle with them and get our scent at the same time.

I have the website book marked. Lol. About how much would you say you guys pay for fleece at walmart? Just trying to get an idea so I can get idea of how much toys I can make her.

And in response about researching first and impulse buying. I was an impulse buyer but not from a mill breeder.

I first saw a sugar glider at the Peanut Festival in Suffolk, Virginia. I just thought they were so cute and they were gliding to everyone and letting you hold them and I was smitten. I did not buy one that day as the cost was $500.00 for the whole SHE-BANG. I never forgot about Sugar Gliders though and happened to be shopping for Rabbit stuff at our local Pet Store and my Gosh, they had a (1) sugar glider. Well, I bought it. Never studied one thing about them. Got home with that little bird cage, and it was tiny and was so proud of myself for now having one. He just crabbed and crabbed and was terrified. I then began researching the word "Sugar Glider" and found this site. I started reading about them being colony animals and I KNEW I needed to get him a friend. Approximately one week later after reading and learning that my cage was also too small I went back to the pet store to purchase a bigger flight cage and guess what, they had another (1) glider. I bought him and it has been uphill all the way ever since.

I will NEVER fuss at anyone for not researching BEFORE they buy a Glider. I only get upset about people who don't educate themselves AFTER they OWN one. Almost everyone who has gliders was uneducated before they purchased one. I feel the people who researched before they got one are way smater then I was but I spend almost everyday on here reading to teach myself and typing to educate others.

I buy Fleece blankets that I pay about 3.00 a blanket for and cut them up and make my stuff with them.

It is good that you are asking questions. How is anyone going to learn anything? It is hard sometimes to search and then try to read everything to get one small question answered. I swear I am search retarded!

I was also an impulse buyer and would never look down on another one. Thank God I didn't listen to Mr. Swank sales dude and got right on the internet and this was the first site that popped up. I quickly learned that you need more than one (which I was told, but I was also told he would do OK with lots of attention ) and ran back to the show and got another the next afternoon. I asked a ton of questions here - how do you think I got to 500 posts? LOL!

By the way the "screaming" at your boyfriend noise is called crabbing.

Edited to add that my babies preferred to sleep in an old t-shirt of mine at the bottom of the cage for a while too.

Crabbing, I knew that's what it was. Lol! We are getting another female in 2 weeks. The new one will be about 14 weeks OOP when we get her. I know all about the 'quarantine' time, and not to put her directly in the cage with Sassy, the one we have now.

But...
Since Sassy is 2, and the new one is only 14 weeks, will they be fine together? Well should it work out? Or will the ages be a problem?

Sometimes the age is a concern, sometimes not. You'll just have to wait and see.

You may need to wait until the joey is close to the same size as your current glider. After the 30 day quarantine, if they are close in size, take the introductions slowly and give them plenty of time to get to know each other. There is always a chance that they might not get along at all. I had one glider that refused to have anything to do with the colony I wanted her to join - but she is fine now and living happily with my other colony.

Introductions take a lot of patience but they should get along if you take things at their pace.

Size isn't a issue I have personally experienced, but as you may recall from my previous post I am absolutely addicted to this site so I have read alot. I have seen it mentioned that you wait till they are closer in size. Nope, the 30 day quarantine should be in an other room-no contact. It isn't ideal, but she'll be OK for the 30 days. It truly is for their own health.

Yes I am pretty sure the smaller cage is ok for the 30 days. No the cages shouldn't really even be in the same room until after the 30 days and the 2 vet visits coming back parasite free. Than you can move the closer little by little. also no play/bathroom time until after the 30 days. You will even want to wash your hands real well in between playing with the gliders.
