you can not change a cat's natural instincts. the cat will go after the glider no matter what. cat saliva is toxic to gliders so one bite or scratch can be deadly to gliders. just dont have the glider out when the cat is. www.youtube.com/user/LuckyGliderRescue you should watch luckyglider's youtube videos millbreeder lies. he has one about cats and dogs getting along with gliders.

We dont let our cats interact with our gliders. Cats natural instinct is to kill gliders. They are prey to your cat. Even if a cat doesn't kill your glider when it attacks it, the bite alone could kill your glider because of their saliva.

Heres a link to an attack recently. www.sugarglider.com/glidergossip/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41306

Please dont try to get your gliders to interact with your cat or they are going to end up hurt.

You DON'T. You can never trust a cat to get along with a sugar glider, they are natural predators. It is simply not worth the risk to even let them near each other, especially if your cat is looking at them like a tasty treat all the time, that will most likely cause stress for your gliders.

They will never be friends! My cat killed my Gliders Penelope and Philly and Penelope was pregnant with 2 joeys in pouch, please keep you cat away from your glider. Cats are hunters and gliders are their prey. That will never change!!

Hmm... I didn't mean that to sound rude - thought I'd better throw that out there :-)

Now, please don't think it's ok to let kitty play with the fuzz butt. But I will say this (and some will not agree). The first thing I do is to introduce ALL my animals. I don't do this because I plan on letting them play together, I do this because accidents happen. One day some one will get out of the cage, and when it happens, it's nice to be sure the cat and dog both know this animal is not a field mouse that they are suppose to kill and bring to you, but that it is MOM'S BABY and they aren't to hurt it.

I do that as well hypnotist, but I also NEVER expect them to play together. It does help though that dog's know they are to sit quietly with me and not "harass" the gliders by paying them too much attention, but they will never be friends.

:p very true story.

Cupcake, its great that you came on here to ask. Unfortunately, sugar gliders and cats do not get along. Make sure to be careful to keep them apart and take all the precautions you can. I know you love them both and it would be heartbreaking for an accident to occur

Mine seem to have a little something going on. The dog brings his toys over and sits them on my lap when the gliders are out, I guess he's sharing.

He also investigates the floor around the cage after treat time hoping for a stray yoggie. The gliders don't seem to care too much about the dog, but the dog seems protective of the gliders. If someone other than us goes near the cage the dog stands between them and the cage and pushes against the person to move them back.

I dont know if anyone mentioned it i was reading quickly but I heard that cats salvia can very muchly KILL GLIDERS! almost like an allergic type reaction except they dont come back from it, like we would with an eppi pen. I dont feel the need to say that gliders should play with other gliders and yourself no other animals. Its been said already.

I think that is a great idea if i had any other pets I'd do the same but I dont. I want to get a fish though but I dont think that a fish would be a concern. anyways we always introduced our dog or cat to a puppy we never brought a full grown dog into another full grown dog's home especially males who werent nuetered. I now it can be done but we didnt risk it. But great idea.

I got mine from PP also so I've seen all the infamous photos as well. I don't know how in good conscience they can lead people to believe that stuff. I'm just very happy that you came here and asked and didn't get on the defensive when told otherwise like some others do....and I promise, your babies will thank you too!

Didn't a member just have their glider bitten by a cat the other day and thankfully got it to the vet in 10 minutes? I know that was not intentional but if your suggie is screaming and hollering, wouldn't that tell ya something? Cupcake, forget everything pocket pets told you. Chances are 99.99% of it is incorrect anyway. Gliders don't need other animals. They need cagemates. You can find the right way to get this process done here on this forum. Right along with just about everything else you need to know by people who do know. We don't want your money. The only thing we have to gain is another healthy happy glider in the world.

That would be me. My cats have never been allowed to interact with my gliders, but we do keep the glider cage in the living room. At some point during the night Casey decided to play escape artist (we now think one of the clips we use in conjuncture with the cages ironically named 'suicide' door was bumped up a half inch and allowed Casey to lift the suicide door and squeeze out.)We have since had to reconsider this in favor of a secured secondary space for the cage that is cat-free for when we are unable to monitor the gliders (i.e. when we sleep).

We were lucky in my roommate heard Casey crabbing and we were able to take action quickly once we realized he was injured. I shudder to think what could have happened if he hadn't woken up...

Gliders and cats make as much sense as humans and tigers...sure you can believe they are 'safe,' but all it takes is one bad day.

I am glad you asked and got the right information. PP in my opinion is one of the evils in the pet world. They seem to care in my opinion more about selling and money than they do the animals. They make gliders seem like they are easy and will fit right into any family and that just is not the case. I am glad your smart enough to question what you have been told. Just a summery.

#1. All gliders need to live at least with one other glider.

#2. They do need vet care.

#3. They need a good diet and I think pellets are crap and not logically good food for gliders as they are so far from being natural.

#4. Gliders need a much larger cage than the on PP sells.

Those are just highlights off the top of my head.

I think most others here have these same opinions and with good reason.

Welcome to the boards!

All the best,
BookGoddes

Sadly, we keep posting this and even debunk mill breeder lies on our youtube site.

It's pretty simple really:

Here is the run-down of the top 5 death reasons for sugar gliders...

1. Malnutrition and any malady stemming from it
2. Dehydration
3. Eaten / Crushed by dog or cat
4. Killed by another glider either directly or from infected bite
5. Exposure to extreme temperatures

We know this because of what is reported to us when people come to either surrender or adopt animals. Many animals are surrendered because the owner had a mishap with dog or cat leaving one glider mourning and the human distressed and then just wanting to "give up" the live one. Happens a lot.

I am glad you came here for information! Please stick around for sound advice, funny stories, and cute pictures! Please check out the diet information in the Gliderpedia- Pocket Pets will have sold you on a bad diet for them as well, so take the time to browse diet options for your baby! :D Welcome to the community!

I'm glad you are listening to us on the cat issue- if you would like to read some horror stories on cats and gliders type cat into the search bar up in the top right corner of the page, it will be an eye opening experience. (I've had a close call with one of my joeys and my cat as well- I keep a close eye on everybody and do not take chances).

Might I suggest, since you have a cat who is already interested in your glider that you invest in a small pop up tent so you can have play time if you already haven't? This way you can have play time in a safe environment that the glider cannot get out from away from the cat. My boys love their tent time and I feel that I can sit inside the tent with them in a room with the door closed away from the cats and not be in constant fear that someone may decide to try to shimmy under the door.
