i am trying to get my cat to not attack my sugar glider (cupcake) but i can not work with my cat because i really do not trust her and she just looks like she wants to eat her. can you guys tell me how you got your cat and sugar glider to get along? thanks!
heidiness Super Glider USA 380 Posts We dont let our cats interact with our gliders. Cats natural instinct is to kill gliders. They are prey to your cat. Even if a cat doesn't kill your glider when it attacks it, the bite alone could kill your glider because of their saliva. Heres a link to an attack recently. www.sugarglider.com/glidergossip/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=41306
Please dont try to get your gliders to interact with your cat or they are going to end up hurt. cupcake Glider 136 Posts thanks for telling me. the place were i got my sugar glider (pocket pets) said that they can bond with other animals. again thanks!

Unfortunately, sugar gliders and cats do not get along. Make sure to be careful to keep them apart and take all the precautions you can. I know you love them both and it would be heartbreaking for an accident to occur cupcake Glider 136 Posts i will keep them apart. thank you everyone. i am glad you told before something bad happened. I didn't mean that to sound rude - thought I'd better throw that out there :-) Now, please don't think it's ok to let kitty play with the fuzz butt. But I will say this (and some will not agree). The first thing I do is to introduce ALL my animals. I don't do this because I plan on letting them play together, I do this because accidents happen. One day some one will get out of the cage, and when it happens, it's nice to be sure the cat and dog both know this animal is not a field mouse that they are suppose to kill and bring to you, but that it is MOM'S BABY and they aren't to hurt it.

I think that is a great idea if i had any other pets I'd do the same but I dont. I want to get a fish though but I dont think that a fish would be a concern. anyways we always introduced our dog or cat to a puppy we never brought a full grown dog into another full grown dog's home especially males who werent nuetered. I now it can be done but we didnt risk it. But great idea. I know that was not intentional but if your suggie is screaming and hollering, wouldn't that tell ya something?

That would be me. My cats have never been allowed to interact with my gliders, but we do keep the glider cage in the living room. At some point during the night Casey decided to play escape artist (we now think one of the clips we use in conjuncture with the cages ironically named 'suicide' door was bumped up a half inch and allowed Casey to lift the suicide door and squeeze out.)We have since had to reconsider this in favor of a secured secondary space for the cage that is cat-free for when we are unable to monitor the gliders (i.e. when we sleep). We were lucky in my roommate heard Casey crabbing and we were able to take action quickly once we realized he was injured. I shudder to think what could have happened if he hadn't woken up... Gliders and cats make as much sense as humans and tigers...sure you can believe they are 'safe,' but all it takes is one bad day. cupcake Glider 136 Posts thank you for warning me about pocket pets. that is why i am getting my new sugar glider from a breeder. again i will not let my cat have any contact with my sugar glider. thank you everyone! my sugar glider (cupcake) also thanks you. BookGoddes Face Hugger 482 Posts I am glad you asked and got the right information. PP in my opinion is one of the evils in the pet world. They seem to care in my opinion more about selling and money than they do the animals. They make gliders seem like they are easy and will fit right into any family and that just is not the case. I am glad your smart enough to question what you have been told. Just a summery. #1. All gliders need to live at least with one other glider. #2. They do need vet care. #3. They need a good diet and I think pellets are crap and not logically good food for gliders as they are so far from being natural. #4. Gliders need a much larger cage than the on PP sells. Those are just highlights off the top of my head. I think most others here have these same opinions and with good reason. Welcome to the boards! All the best, BookGoddes LuckyGlider Zippy Glidershorts TX, USA 5266 Posts Sadly, we keep posting this and even debunk mill breeder lies on our youtube site. It's pretty simple really: Here is the run-down of the top 5 death reasons for sugar gliders... 1. Malnutrition and any malady stemming from it 2. Dehydration 3. Eaten / Crushed by dog or cat 4. Killed by another glider either directly or from infected bite 5. Exposure to extreme temperatures We know this because of what is reported to us when people come to either surrender or adopt animals. Many animals are surrendered because the owner had a mishap with dog or cat leaving one glider mourning and the human distressed and then just wanting to "give up" the live one. Happens a lot.
