I'm mad at my parents right now. Just a week ago, they said that we'd get a female friend for Gizmo. Now, when I brought up saying "Luna's a cool name isn't it? Gizmo and luna.." to my mom, she's like "No, don't think we're going to-" And I cut her off about something random because I didn't want to go into that conversation. They keep blowing it off as if I'm just wanting to get more and more sugar gliders and obssessed with them (which I do believe I have Glideritis). I'm getting really annoyed. I've found perfect deals on females like "$50 dollar ones, $70, $85 with cage and pouches and toys..etc." but they keep blowing it off. And I don't want you guys to be like "Well, then I don't think you should have Gizmo if you can't have 2" because i'm taking VERY good care of him and showing i'm responsible.

I know they know the importance of having two sugar gliders because I read what you guys had to say about they being in pairs and they understood it and accepted getting a female. They told me to look for deals and stuff for females last week and now their not even talking about getting one...I'm just mad/sad..

That's terrible. It's fantastic that you understand the importance of having a cage mate, but so sad that your parents don't understand. Is there any way you can have them talk to vets or research the importance of a colony? That way they know it's not just you wanting another glider, it's actually critical to Gizmo's life. I'm sorry for you. And Gizmo. I hope your parents change their mind soon! Don't worry about anyone thinking you're not being a good sugar dada. It's obvious you're trying to do what's best for him.

Is Gizmo neutered? If not, you need to either get him neutered now before you get him a female friend - or get him another male friend.

Talk about having more and more gliders - well, with an unneutered male and a female you most certainly will end up with lots of gliders!

I'm so sorry and can understand your frustration. Don't give up and continue to try to talk to them about it. Remember to stay calm and cool because they will become defensive if they think you're not being respectful in the way you discuss it with them. Unfortunately frustration just breeds frustration. I know that one day you will have your friend for Gizmo. I'll be praying for you and him. Good Luck.

Just a suggestion, but if they keep waiting in the meantime could you maybe mow/rake/shovel or even babysit or something like that and save up your own money to get him a friend? It might take that long for your parents to give you the money anyway. Than you will feel extra good about earning the money yourself too.

Oh, I have the money, I spent about $200 of my own money for Gizmo about 4 months ago. But now I only have a little less than 100. It's not a money problem, it's just a- well, I don't even know why they're "not interested".

That is such a shame if it isn't a financial problem of theirs I just don't see why they would think it would be more of a issue of course unless it is like Rita mentioned neuters are going to need to be paid for or you are going to have a joey problem. And you probally aren't always going to have money to take them to the vet, but considering you already have one I assumed that part didn't bother them.

Just have them read Goldwinger's thread about having at least pairs. If that doesn't tug at their heart, nothing will.

I wouldn't do that. As long as you're living in their house, you have to respect their rules. This approach could cause major trouble; with my father, it would have. There may be underlying reasons for their turnaround that you aren't aware of.

This advice from Goldwinger is the best:
quote:
Don't give up and continue to try to talk to them about it. Remember to stay calm and cool because they will become defensive if they think you're not being respectful in the way you discuss it with them.
The more maturity you show in your approach, the more respect they will give your viewpoint. Try to find out why they've changed their minds (without whining!) and work on ways to overcome their objections. Good luck!

Ditto show them some of the posts about pairs. Then ask them what they would do if they were all lone. Some animals just need to be together and gliders are one of them. Good luck.

Are there any threads that show that having two glider's isn't much of a differnce from having one? You just have to give them about 1-2 tablespoons more food each night, Have a slightly bigger cage, and recieve twice the love!

I don't know about other peoples parents, but when I tried to convince my parents to let me get glider's they said no the first time, and I gave up. Then two year's later I decided I wanted to try again, and made a computer slide show about them... The next sunday I was driving home with two rescue glider's!

Does your knowlodge of glider's soften your parents?

Well, they say that i'm very responsible (SP?) and take very good care of him. I think i'm persuading my mom more than my dad. Last night my mom seemed a little convinced. And yes, I have a 6 foot cage, and Gizmo's alllll alone in it..:( (well, besides his toys )

Keep trying...we are all behind you here.

Here is the link to the stories that you inspired. After beginning to talk to you last night my mind was just a whirling. I keep thinking about if I was a lone glider. Then the thought just popped into my head to do this. I hope you like them and I hope your parents enjoy them too but mostly I hope they get a clearer picture of what's a stake here. I'm sure that they have all the confidence in you that you can care for two.
