Yesterday when we got our baby the place we purchased him from (yes, I believe it was PPP) said that us having two cats would not be an issue and our cats would adapt to him and eventually become playmates/friends. I've been searching this site for a little while now and I'm not seeing any information or posts indicating if this is correct or not.
My two cats are extremly curious about out new baby but do not seem to want to harm him (just watch him all the time)! Will we eventually be able to have our baby out and in the same room as our cats without worry about them harming him?
Or should I be keeping my cats away from our new baby at all times?
Thanks!

Hello,
My cats and dogs don't seem to want to harm my glider either, and just stare at him like, "Dear owner, do you realize there is a mouse sitting on your head?" I don't think they would eat Gizmo, but I do think they would play with him - the way they play with any small animal they've caught. This would likely not end well for the glider. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would not trust them with a poor glider who could never defend itself against those wicked claws and teeth! Better safe than sorry, as they say.

Thank you sooooo much for coming on here! I know this is going to be hard to hear, but anything PPP told you-disregard. That includes the heat rock, diet, and living alone. We would be happy to tell you about there lies in due time if you want to know, but in the meantime: Keep your kitties away from your baby!

Your cats can and probably will attack and eat your glider. It doesn't matter that they aren't a rodent and don't smell like one. Rabbits, birds, and lizards aren't rodents, yet my cats seem to think they are fitting presents for my doorstep. Sugar gliders should not be allowed near dogs, cats, or birds. It is dangerous for them, and it is far better to keep them not only separate, but not in the same room. A cat can easily claw a glider through the bars in the cage.

Also-look into getting your baby a friend. They should not be kept alone, and I would be happy to help find a rescue or a breeder near you. Adding to all this, please get your glider on a good diet. Throw out your pellets and look into getting them on HPW, BML, Priscilla Price, or LGRS soup. There is a search engine up top for any questions you have. In the meantime, you can get them fresh fruits and veggies and either an egg, cooked chicken, or some fruit flavored or plain yogurt for the protein.

My dog lays at the top of the steps the entire time the gliders are out. They are out in my living room with all the doors in the hallway shut and the doors upstairs shut. My dog stands guard at the top of the steps ready to alert us when Rascal, my goofy boy decides to go upstairs. My dog never hurts him, actually never even touches him, rather he will walk around the glider at the top of the steps and come downstairs and comes and tells me that he is upstairs! AS SOON as I put the gliders away the dog comes down stairs and goes to the cabinet where his pigs ears are! He gets one every night after preforming guarding duties.. I wouldn't trust cats and I wouldn't trust most dogs, but my dog has been good with ferrets, gini pigs and now gliders! I wouldn't leave the gliders running around the room without me around, but nightly when we let them out this is what we do :)

I am sorry, but after being on here for awhile, you h.ear plenty of "my dog/cat wouldn't harm anything" and then a week or month later that same person is crying when their glider has been attacked and killed. Maybe the animal didn't mean to harm the glider, but size and instincts always wins out

ed from lucky glider rescues has told us that they have many gliders come into the rescue because their cagemate was killed by the owners cats or dogs. the animal may not mean to harm the glider they just forget how big they are and be to rough with it or just get startled by the glider and harm it.
if you have an extra room or a room you can always keep the door shut keep the gliders in there it also keeps them safe if they ever escape from their cage. if your cats have claws i would not allow them near the glider's cage since they can still harm the gliders through the cage bars.
i have 3 cats and they all act differently toward the gliders. i wont let 1 of the cats in the room at all when the boys are in their cage playing because i dont like the way she looks at them and the gliders dont like it either. my 2 other cats have grown tired of the gliders and ignores them but i still would never let my gliders play with the cats. its not worth the risk of the gliders getting hurt and a vet bill.

My cats only interact with my gliders thru the tent. They really enjoy watching each other and playing with each other. If the cats lay down next to the tent the gliders will run back and forth in front of them until one of the cats gets up and approaches the tent. They really seem to like each other and they show no agression. I will NEVER have my gliders outside the tent with my cats -- I love all of them and I do not want to put any of them in the position to either be hurt or for any accidents to happen.

Please just never risk it. Never ever let your kitties around your glider. Do you really want to chance it? Is it worth it to see? I wish ppp would show what happens when a cat gets ahold of a glider and doesn't kill it by trying to eat it. Just biting it will kill it. Whether it looks to be a mortal wound or not. Just don't do it. I have two cats that are not allowed around our babies at all and two dogs (chihuahuas) that are petrified of them because of their crabbing.

Cat + Sugar Glider = one less mouth to feed.

We got my daughter a pet bunny several years ago. One of the cats decided if she wanted a bunny she could get her a bunny. She brought her a dead bunny and put it on her pillow while she was sleeping. No this wasn't the pet bunny. It was a wild one.

I am guessing it's been said but...

This topic title should be

"Sugar Gliders and Two Cats?"

I have two cats, they could care less... but they are never left alone together, never play together and the gliders have their own room. Key part. GLIDERS. A single glider is a sad glider, usually. D:

I have 2 gliders and 2 cats. One of my cats is actually afraid of them, won't go near the cage and when I've held my glider near the cat he runs away. The other cat likes to sit next to the cage and just watch. He's never swat at them. He actually treats the glider like he would a kitten. When I first introduced the glider to him last summer he let the glider cuddle up with him and actually licked/cleaned him like a kitten. It was the sweetest thing.

Even with how my cats are. I don't ever leave them unattended around my gliders.

<font color="green">Never Never Never have your gliders out in the same room with the cat. Yeah they just look at them. Once they get on the floor and start running I bet that cat is ready to pounce. Once they do you now possibly have on dead glider. Also It sounds like you just have one. Gliders need to be in pairs. Thats my

Glad to see you found this site!! It's a wonderful source of info!! I know how much you love your little one already but please disregard pretty much everything PPP told you. I'm just trying to be pro-active so if I say anything you already are aware of I apologize. Take some time and research the diets under Resources/Nutrition up top (pellets are not healthy and i've seen too many people come here after 6mo's to a year with very sick gliders) - get rid of the heat rock if you have one, and they need a bigger cage than what PPP suggests - also, def start looking for a friend:) They are colony animals and can get depressed being alone (meaning they can stop eating, self mutilate) - I know it's overwhelming based on how easy PPP makes it all look, but just take one day a time and you'll be okay. A lot of us have been in the same boat:)
You'll find some great information in Gliderpedia above - don't hesitate to ask questions.
