Checking speed on the sugar glider server

Posted by: kazko
-----
Out of random curiosity I did an Internet speed check from the server console. It's looking good. Upstream is a bit over 18Mbps. If I can get some of my sites making income this year I am going to fatten this up some too. I think the next tier is 50Mbps upstream. Imagine that.

This site is currently running on a real hardware server but I may virtualize it eventually to save energy. Most of my other sites are already on a linux virtual machine hosted here as well.

Some day everything I use here will be merged down to just the single VM box with a few guests on it. I already have the hardware that can support all of it. 16Gig ram goes a long way to support basic Internet servers.

New Cage!!

Posted by: galaeowyn
-----

Well we decided since our budget got really tight just before our sugar glider is to come home....that we would just build a cage instead. We got really lucky and found an awesome design!

justforfuzzies.com/Other_Stuff/Cage/index.html

(thanks to the designer!)

Then as if it were meant to be a friend called and told me hardware cloth at HD was on sale for $1.50 a roll!! I was beside my self!! so we spent $10 bucks on that. Then we went to the store and picked up all the other materials for about $50 bucks! so $60 bucks later we began the work.

I have to give the hubby all the credit on the work, I have fibro so I'm limited on what I can do and for how long. But we worked lat into the night and got most all the pieces hardware clothed. lol

We assembled it this morning! And only had one mishap one door was too small! lol.....not to bad!

I can't wait to decorate it and then finally bring our little guy home!

All in all I saved $190 bucks on the cage and gave him ALOT more play space then the "bird cage" would have been. So I'm very happy! Thanks to alot of web surfing! It paid off!!

Juju is doing better, looking for Joeys!

Posted by: shelbyxgore

As some may know, Juju-bear was sick alittle while back. I didn't have anyway to the vet. It turned out she was just getting alittle cold, I carried her around in my pocket for a long time, (only around the house). Shes doing much better and is back to her, Brat self!
I've been looking around for a little sister for Juju. Juju-bear is now around three years old I think. I didn't have her intill she was two, I've had her for three months. I was at the Flea Market and they had two Gliders. One was a crabby male, the other they couldn't tell.. which was dumb because the glider was already three years old! I was telling my mom how I'd never buy a glider off of that lady.

I want a young Joey. Female. One that will be able to get along with Juju really fast. So, if anyone finds anything, i'd like to knnow.

please email me at

Pollen protein project

Posted by: snusie
-----
Started last May, trying to find several good references on the protein content of various flower pollens as treats for our little guys. I was able to find some Australian studies, which are really good, and one from Poland; but needed information on flowers available to us in the US. Yesterday I finally found one, and it's fantastic. USDA, 377 different pollen sources listed, and the mean protein content for each. It's a real treasure. I've copied it onto my hard drive, and now for the tedious work.

So far I've got about 40 plants listed. I've looked at many more, but they're not indigenous to the US, or only grow in very limited areas; or produce the pollen in catkins and not flowers. I'd like to use things that are available pretty much anywhere; and that have a fairly high count -- at least 25%, though some go as high as 60% protein. And, of course, the first consideration is that they be non-toxic.

I'm listing common name, scientific name, and protein percentage. When I finally get the spreadsheet done I'll put all the data into a regular document (with pictures if I can get them, or at least a good description), to add to the Gliderpedia. This is going to take some time, I can only work on it on the weekends. I hope to have the article ready by spring.

Dont forget the mesh!

Posted by: kazko
-----
Most cages used for sugar gliders will have 1/2" bar spacing all around. This is acceptable for climbing on but isnt much for the animals to stand on or perch comfortably.

I recommend laying 1/2" or even 1/4" mesh cloth on the floors of the cage. This gives more surface area for them to rest their weight on yet it still allows most things to fall through.

All you need to do is cute the mesh to size and fasten it with four or so tie wraps.

If you happen to have one of the typical Tower Cages that are preferred in our community, then you have the ability to also build a second floor for the animals with mesh too. This give double the floor space for perching, exploring or placing objects, and it makes the occupants happy. A cage can never have too many hides, pouches, shelves and things to explore and stimulate.

Aussie.

The long awaited moment is drawing very near.

My boyfriend has agreed to pay for Aussie as a belated x-mas gift ^.^ She is $200.00 including her cage, toys and anything non perishable for her food.

He is going to hopefully be picking her up on the 22nd and bringing her out to me. ^.^

I'm just hoping my parents don't flip out. We already have 10 animals (o.0) in the house and 11 might put them over the edge. lol... but I think they understand the importance of these little guys having mates. I'll hopefully be getting Tazz neutered as I have a phone interview sheduled with an exotic vet next week.

I'm going to ask a couple of questions about procedure, pricing ect... is there anything specific I should be asking? I'll post in the forums too..

And for those of you worry worts, there are indeed 10 animals, but they are all well cared for and loved very much. We have 2 doggies (Dot and Merlin) 7 cats ( Tripod, Detonator, Bear, Smokey, Chief, Captain and Picasso) and of course Tazz! Both Merlin and Tripod are special needs... Merlin is deaf and has an allergy to meat protiens and Tripod is of course missing a leg... thus the name.

I am loving home very much and so are my animals, only Captain is allowed outside for the time being, but Chief and Casso both have appointments to be fixed at a local vet and after that they will be able to explore with the rest of the kittys. Tazz has a nice big room to jump around in and when I get my own room, I am allowed to glider-ize it. I already have mesh stuff for him to climb on and the unfamiliar surroundings will make intros a breeze I hope!

Anyways... wish me luck and any suggestions are welcome!

Home

I'm home now, with my parents and brother.

I brought the cats and glider with me and all it well. I got all my stuff moved out and I am moving on with my life.

Not sure if the boyfriend and I will get through this, but I know I will and that is what matters.

Now I need to work on getting my shift for work changed and getting a place to sleep set up because a couch just sucks.
