Jan 7, 2010 New Year. Posted by: MorikoIt's the new year! Yay! Classes at the University start next week! I'm not very excited to be up to my eyeballs in school work and work at my jobs, but that's life. Blah. It's time to cut some people out of my life that are not bringing in good energy. I'm sick of letting people control my emotions. I REALLY need to study more often this semester and concentrate on what really matters in life, family, friends, and happiness... and gliders and kittens. :3 I really want to start getting more practice in with my musical side, hopefully I get fit everything in. Be happy, healthy, eat fruit and prosper, -Ryan Hoffman
Jan 6, 2010 One day at a time. Posted by: EssikaSo life is getting better. I'm putting one foot in front of the other and doing what I can to get through this crisis. I stayed at a motel the first night, and my friends place last night. Tonight I'm going home with my mom after work. My boyfriend and I have decided on what our plan of action is. We are moving back in with our parents for the time being. My folks said I can keep my animals there with them and I'm even allowed to get Aussie provided they stay in my room (They aren't fond of the barking) As for work, I have been going everyday.... taking it one day at a time. I'm trying not to miss any time or let my personal affairs get in the way of my professional life, but it's hard. I still plan on going even after I go home, but the problem is I don't drive and home is about 45min away. So Rob (my boyfriend) and I decided since we no longer need to pay any rent or bills we are going to take what money we have from our last pay and the one coming up and buy a used car. So we can drive to work and back together. All in all, I say things are starting to work out, I just need to find a place for my boyfriend to stay tonight and tomorrow... Jan 6, 2010 Testing nest box design for sugar gliders Posted by: kazkoI have long been wanting to find the perfect nest box for my sugar gliders. To date I just have not found one that suits my needs. I have so far been using plastic kitty litter containers as nest boxes which work pretty well but they are huge and just eat too much valuable cage space. Plus they are hard to get to. For me, a nestbox needs to keep my animals safe and warm but have them within easy reach by me. I also want to have a webcam on top looking in so a bit of height is necessary. I have wanted to hang a box on the door of the cage for some time so that I can open the cage door then open the nest box to hand feed my critters treats and give attention. So I found and modified a suitable cardboard box to see how it would go. I put the hole in the side so they can climb in from the cage wall and I cut a very large access door in the wide side leaving about 4" untouched at the bottom for their bodies so that they cant just fall out. The outside dimensions of this box are 4.5" x 9" x 12" and it straddles the hinge side of the cage door so that it leaves room to swing all the way out without hitting the doorway. I moved their pouch into the new Exel XL Tower cage
and within minutes they were all out exploring the cage and then they all ended up in the new nest box and there they have been since. I think they love the new space. The box bottom stays wide so there is no more narrow bottom to crush someone under the colony. It holds my 8 very well. I think it's time for me to get hold of a table saw and start experimenting with wood creations. One thing I have to be weary of in the design is pinch points. Sugar gliders grab, thats what they do. There is always a hand grasping the edge of an open door. So my door will have to sit over the doorway like a hatch, be hinged an inch or so away from the hole and possibly be set away from the box by a small shim as to prevent a toe from going missing. I will also probably hinge the access door on the inner cage side of the box so that I can still fully close the cage door in an emergency even if the box is left open. I might also like to experiment with hanging the nest box outside of the cage through a feeder door, but this scares me with a wooden box. Perhaps I will try and do a plastic model using some sort of mdf panel or such and see if that is harder for them to chew through.
Jan 4, 2010 My life is a wreck. Posted by: EssikaOkay, so today is officially the worst day of my life. I woke up at 8:30am to someone banging on my door, It was my crazy landlord and an enforcement officer. I was told to pack up and get out. I had no idea what was going on or what to do. Apparently the payment arrangements I had made with my landlord were ignored and he filed to the Landlord/Tenant board, never gave us notice that he had filed or gave us notice of an eviction date. We had been following through with payment arrangements so that we could get caught up on backed rent from when my room mate moved out without notice and I thought all was well. Apparently I was wrong... The enforcement officer basically said we were SOL and that we would need to get out even though the landlords hadn't followed proper procedure and did something illegal. So we packed up some things and I put Tazz into his travel cage and we went to a local motel for the night. My cats are still at my old apartment until tomorrow... they have lots of food and water... no worries there. I have no idea what I'm going to do tomorrow for a place to stay. My parents are coming to help me pack up and I think I'll send Tazz and my cats with them, but as for Rob and I, I don't know... We both work in Belleville and my parents live a ways a way and work at different times as us. I may end up staying at a friends place or at a local shelter until we can get a new place (Hopefully Friday). Basically Aussie is going to be put on hold for now and I will be trying to figure out my life right now. I'm going to ask the Tribunal for a Stay or see if Salvation Army can help us cover the cost of the Motel. Either way... your thoughts and well wishes are greatly appreciated. Wish me luck. Jan 4, 2010 18" Exercise Wheel Posted by: kazkoI threw together a fun 18" exercise wheel tonight for my sugar gliders. I found a decent donor plastic tub, cut off the excess, mounted an inside track using rivets and put the thing onto a hefty ball bearing system. It's ugly but it is absolutely silent and it works. They love it. I think I will continue exploring a good and safe design for this concept and I'll try to get some really good slow-mo videos in tent as well.
Jan 2, 2010 Wodent Wheel homebrew trim track nail trimmer Posted by: kazkoI highly recommend using Wodent Wheels
for your sugar gliders, especially ones with nail trimmer tracks. I finally got my new sand paper roll in the mail today which allowed me to begin redoing some worn out exercise wheels. The sand paper I had previously tried was 2" wide and had a fabric backing to it. Through this first iteration I have learned to not use a fabric backed abrasive in a glider cage as the fabric will string off and get caught on anything which could turn into a dangerous situation for the animals, so dont do it. Here's what I mean:

The new sandpaper is a 2-3/4" longboard roll with a paper backing and a pressure sensitive adhesive to help it stick. I got mine on Ebay. I did some reading and chose the DURA-GOLD
brand, but there are others that may work fine including 3M. What you want is a 320 grit 2-3/4" roll
so that you can custom cut the length you need. You can get these on Amazon
as well. So all you do is lay out your open Wodent Wheel, load in the sandpaper, load in the inner track and close it all up.
The example above is using an inner track cut out of 1/4" diamond pattern gutter guard from the hardware store. The example below is using a squared 1/4" mesh inner track. I am curious to see if there is any preference or modified results between the squared or diamond tracks.
The inner track and sandpaper need to be about 33" long. You do not need to do any sewing or fastening of any kind, you just use the inner track to hold the paper in place. The inner track is connected and held in place with a single small piece of an FRP panel trim which can be found online at AMAZON
or at any Home Depot
.
The plastic hardware net can be found on AMAZON
as well. If you keep it clean and replace your nail trimmer a few times a year as needed, your Wodent Wheel should last you a very long time. Here's my blind boy rescue Hunter running on the refreshed wheel.
Jan 1, 2010 Babysitting Gliders Posted by: GoldwingerWell today began the six month med cruise for Trina and David. Trina was sad last night as she brought Anon and Fivel over to drop them off. I could see it in her eyes and who could blame her. I'd be sad too if I was leaving my babies with someone I barely knew and for as long as six months. I felt so sad for her. David didn't come inside. I know he was tired and I don't know maybe it was just to hard for him. Can't say as I blame him. They are both very nice people and have two wonderful gliders that are very well adjusted and friendly. She has them on a great diet which consists of HPW and the veggie and fruit relish 2:1 ratio. She made alot of food for them and left me with the stuff to make the HPW. It's really great that we both use the same Vet so that will be a relief if I have to take them to the Vet if they should get sick. She left me with a good amount of money as well so that I could pay a Vet bill or get them anything they may need. They shouldn't need much. I did fix up their cage with a few things as I was telling her that since I had two other cages of gliders and children that I was sure I would not get to play with them as much as they did but that I would make sure they had plenty of stimulating toys and as much play time as I could spare. She was very kind and told me that she knew she was leaving them in very good hands and that made her feel better. I hope so because I will do my absolute best to make sure they are well cared for and will be waiting for them when they get back from their cruise. I'm sure it made them feel good to know that they didn't have to give them up and loose them by finding someone (me) in the area to watch them. She is going to e-mail me her's and David's ship e-mail address so I can keep in touch with them about their babies and I promised to send them pictures. As soon as I get to take down the Christmas tree I'm going to set back up my tent so I can do tent time with them. It's been about a month since I've been able to do tent time with my own so I'm excited about getting it set back up. I'm hoping my hubby will let me go overboard and buy a Genji tent and I'm also hoping to purchase two exel cages as well. We are hoping he makes bonus this last quarter and if he does we might have enough for all three but I have to ask his permission to spend all his money on the gliders. You're talking about 800.00 dollars in stuff and it's his money so let's hope he'll let me use it. If not for the cages I'm sure I can get a Genji tent out of him and maybe a bird.com cage at least. I need to replace the one my colony of three is in. Anyway back to Trina, David and the gliders. I hugged her before she left and thanked her and David both for serving our country and we'd see them when they got back. Pray for me and these wonderful babies that I can do right by them and by Trina and David and get them their gliders back healthy. Needless to say I'm a little scared but happy to care for them so they don't have to re-home them. I can tell they love them very much and they are great glider parents. Dec 25, 2009 Friend for Tazz Posted by: EssikaSo it's finally happening. I was unfortunately unable to get Toshi, her owner found someone closer that she thought would be better to sell her to... That way she can check up on her and things like that. Despite that, I saw that someone had posted something on kijiji about a brown female glider with cage. accessories and food stuff for $200.00, but when I messaged her she said she was already taken. I left my info with her just in case and sure enough she messaged me 2 weeks later. She and I talked and I can have her whenever I'm ready. No extra charge for holding her. Her name is Aussie ^.^ My first task is to get her comfortably settled in her new home, then visits to the vets for both my little ones and possibly a diet adjustment for my new girl.... After quarantine, there are intro's to be done. I'll keep everyone up to date on our progress! Dec 24, 2009 Need a loving home for a baby sugarglider Posted by: avery8We have a baby boy & girl for sale If interested let us know at averyeverett8@yahoo.com 350.00 for 2 and 200.00 for one. Thank you, Avery Dec 24, 2009 sup Posted by: MrpianowizardI'm just waiting for my vanilla homemade ice cream to be ready so I'm alittle bored lol. It's christmas eve!!! Wooo Dec 24, 2009 Dec 11, 2009 It's been awhile! Posted by: MorikoWow, I haven't written on any of my blogs in so long! I miss it! I've been super busy with finals and the Holiday season! Crazy stress! At least finals are over as of Tuesday, December 8th. With the combined help of my family members, I'm hoping to buy a nice video camcorder for Christmas. I'm thinking about starting a video blog with my suggies. I think it's a very interesting idea and it lets others get updated information on my gliders as well get an opportunity to get attached to my fuzz butts. Any opinions on this idea?
