 Separating Miss Tosca

Posted by: Rita
-----
This morning, I had to get out my little hospital cage and separate Tosca from Tilly and Weasel. NOT because she is sick or injured, but because she was being totally obnoxious with Weasel.

There was a lot of commotion in the cage last night, but not "fighting" so I didnt get up to see what was going on. This morning, the noise STILL happening so I sat and observed them.

Tosca has decided she is going to "mate" with Weasel. Weasel doesnt return those feelings. Tosca would not leave her alone. If Weasel stopped for a split second, Tosca was on her - biting her neck and humping. Weasel was beside herself. Tosca chased her around the cage and just would not leave her alone. Tosca was being VERY aggressive about it. Weasel was doing a lot of loud hissing and fussing.

Since I had to work today, and could not be there to supervise them, I felt it best to separate them so no one got hurt. I could just see it escalating into a huge fight and my coming home to one of them injured. After recently viewing some pictures of mating wounds - I didnt want to take any chances.

Poor little Tilly, who is mindlessly happy, was just running on her wheel having a grand time, oblivious to all going on around her.

If this is what happens when suggies mate, how do you all stand it???

I haven't been on in a while,my computer went out on me.Lucy hasn't really bonded any further with me.I spend roughly 4 hours a day with her when she's awake.Sometimes she'll jump on me and run over my shoulder and such but she won't let me hold her.I'm looking for another sugar glider so at least she'll have company soon. :}

 Momma gentle OH MY GOD

Posted by: miss doolittle

I had this thought that my Momma was so laid back an very gentle for not having alot of handling from me. Then I had been handling me rehome suggie, an I have been trying to figure how to introduce all of them. As I got my hand close to the cage, Momma turned! OH MY GOD!!! I'm so glad that the cage was not open, I don't think I would have still had 5 fingers on my hand.

I get to keep them for now! I'm not sure how my sister in law will feel about them but we are going to give it a shot. My neighbor who checks on them when I am at work still refuses to pet them. She told me this is how she checks on them. "I go up to the cage and say Knock knock little squirrels it's Vicki are you ok and they crab at me. If they don't crab I open the cage and feel the bottom of their pouch and then they holler hello we're sleeping in here. so see I am taking very good care of them." My boyfriend (6'2" 300lbs) is a different story>>> Everytime I open the cage he runs. He says "they hate me. Don't you remember the first time you opened the cage and they flew onto my chest and I pissed my pants? You told me they liked me and I was dumb enough to believe you and a few days later I stood there when you opened the cage and they did it again."

So sad to see them go...

I have 7 sugar gliders well actually 5 now. I have two females (adults) and 1 male (adult) and 2 baby boys who are now old enough to go to new homes.
My lil family was kinda just thrown together and I was so happy to tell others that my girls had babies. They each had 2 babies. My hopes and happiness was dashed as some people began telling me that the mothers would cannibalize the babies and I lived in fear. One day I saw each momma with her babies and they all looked healthy and happy. I'm proud to say my babies have great mommas and they grew up happy and healthy and a lil spoiled rotten. :)
My little girl Strawberry (Apple is her mom) left me yesterday and went to a guy who lives at home and is disabled but has been doing lots of research on suggies. He ran into my hubby at a petstore while My hubby was buying mealies. He has been waiting patiently for a while but now they are his to love and spoil even more rotten than they already are.
Oh! I forgot to add that he also took Strawberry's brother Kiwi for his daughter. I miss them but I know if he needs my help with them he will call. I gave him a suggie care sheet too.
Now to get Rex and Rocky tamed LOL (They are Roxie's babies)
They crab at me all the time especially Rex. He is the smallest but he is feisty. LOL
I am content that my babies are going to be well taken care of and lo and behold Apple is pregnant again. I will let her raise these babies and then Rodney (the daddy)is going to give her a rest. Kinda strange that she was still nursing when I noticed she was pregnant again..?
Anyway that is my happy news and I hope that others will be happy for me as well instead of criticizing me ......
I only wanted to give my boy Rodney a family and he loves all of them.
I have never seen him so happy as to having a baby chew on his ears or bite his tail. He is so gentle with them even during bath time which they hate LOL I always hear fussing and notice that Rodney is trying to bathe an unwilling baby.
When he has had enough of them he goes and sleeps in his barrell of monkeys barrell LOL
Most of the time he sits perched on his branch watching his family eat or play. I know he is finally happy because a family makes you whole.

Robin a four eyed possum is healed

Posted by: kazko
-----
The other day when I had Robin out I noticed that I could not see any remnant of her previous surgery and mean nasty chest infection. Her hair has covered any scar and shes as perky as a possum! It was touch and go there for awhile while she was being nursed back to health and I am simply amazed at the end result.

Below I am posting two photo moments. One is taken today which is all clean and wonderful looking and the second set is one I have never posted before. It is of her open puss filled stinky chest wound. It was really bad for awhile which is why I am amazed that it has healed so well now. We had to leave it open to allow the drugs to heal the infection before closing it up. It got really nasty and scary for a bit but I followed the vets directions, gave her baths, gave her meds and worked with her until we could sew it up.

Kudos to Robin for being a trooper! She's of a healthy disposition and weight now and eating well.

 Terry made me do this

Heyho!

I dunno how many of you know about it, but I took Huubert in for neutering on Wednesday, the 6th of February.

The vet I went to, said she had experience in neutering a couple of suggies before, so I was pretty satisfied with finding her. So, I got to stay during the surgery, Huubert got knocked out by the pre sedatives so no gas was included. She opened his sack, took away his valuables and closed him up with one stitch, gave him a shot with painmeds and antibiotics and off home we went.

Once home, I put the still groggy Huubert into a collar I made for him, he fought it with a desperation I've never seen, but he didn't manage to take it off. I then later that evening decided to try and see if the collar was really necessary, but once off the collar Huubert made really strange noises and started picking on the seuter, so I put it back on. At this point I was crying my eyes out because I got scared that he might self mutilate, and that the sound I heard was the SM noise. I stayed up with him all night, calming him down and keeping him hydrated. I went to the doctors to get myself some sickleave at about 10am, at this point Huubert had exhausted himself so bad that he was just sitting in his travel cage. When I came home, I scooped him into my shirt and slept with him through the day, about 5hours or so, and he really did sleep, eyes shut and mouth popping.

Yet another night passed, Huubert was calmer this time, but still fought the collar and looked really pathetic. I was worrying about him self mutilating when I would take the collar off and just feeling sad and sorry for him. But, I happened to talk to Terry and ask his advice yet again, bugging him with hysterical questions, and he suggested I would take the collar off. At this point it was already morning, about 7am. So I took his advice, prepared myself to get the Huubert back into the collar if necessary, and just held my breath when I took the collar off him. To my surprise, the first thing Huubert did, was to start grooming ME. I felt so sorry for him at this point so I just cuddled with him for a bit, then he started grooming his sack and after fussing with it a bit, he started grooming everything else. At this point I took a deep sigh of relief. Now, he's playing and jumping around, eating a few crickets and just looking really happy that he's out of the collar, so I'm really reliefed, exhausted and happy all at the same time.

This has been without doubt one of the most stressful experiences for me, due to the fact that I really love Huubert just that much, and I would do anything for him. Roz asked me in chat who was more of a mess, me or Huubert, think Huubert was the one with the most stress, but I wasn't far behind him!

I'm sorry this got long, but at least I know ONE person will read this :) *gives Terry a hug in advance*

Here's some pics of Huubert in the really "pretty" collar I made him and some pics about an hour after his "release" :)

Huubert in the crappy collar I made, looking really pathetic

Huubert eating a cricket after his release, look at that fur. He has got the most beautiful coat I've seen, and just after a day and a half after not being able to groom, he looks like that!

Hail, I'm out of the collar! Thank you everyone who gave my mom the support she needed!

 barking update

Posted by: Ahsaehr
-----
So a couple nights ago stimpy was barking up a storm. Really odd for Stimpy since he's usually very quite. Ren, Leia, Trinity and Serenity all froze but while Stimpy was barking he was running around the cage. I've never seen any glider do that, normally they all sit perfectly still when one barks. I find it so funny even Ren and Leia do it. Obviously its instinct because Serenity froze too! My gliders bark about once a week on average but it is almost always the females and usually Trinity at that. I'm glad to know STimpy's voice box still works, aside from chattering I haven't heard him bark or crab for a while. :D

 2/4- Blergh!

Okay, I have been trying to avoid holding the gliders alot because I've been sick!!! But guess what? I noticed Beba finally runs in his wheel!! Damn silent wheels were so silent! lol! So I really dont know when he started to do that! Grrrr....lol

The new baby (Kirby) just started liking yogie drops! I give him little bites at a time, I didnt want him to avoid eating his dinner!

Gizmo, Is still not coming around, I'm actucally starting to frustrated with that. All she ever wants to do is run away, lung towards and bite and crab all the time.

I did recently find out that a few of our gliders came from a mill so was Gizmo, so that could be why shes the way she is. I need some strong adivce with this....

Today is the anniversary of my little Barbie's death. I cant believe its been 3 months already.

And Boomer, my 17 1/2 year old who passed away on June 17th has been gone 7 months now.

Breezy has been gone for almost 4 years. She passed away from pancreatic cancer....

Its a very rare day that goes by that I dont think of them and cry.

Rest in Peace my little fur babies. Know that you were loved every second of your life and beyond. I know you will wait for me and we will all be together again....

I know that I am crazy

Posted by: kazko
-----
I know that I am crazy because of the things that make me ecstatic and giddy. Today it is realizing that both of my possums are choosing to poo and pee in their litter box instead of the cage floor or elsewhere. Can we say "potty trained!"

It is probably just the fact of having ground below them over an open grate as to why they choose the box, but it is still amazing. I can scoop it out easy and the cage is cleaner for it.

YAY!

Cagezilla comes home to the four eyed possums

Posted by: kazko
-----
I recently purchased a huge double macaw cage second hand which is now named Cagezilla. It was such a good deal that I figured I would see how it worked out for my possums. It has a removable partition in the middle which allows me to socialize the possums for mating or to keep them separate and safe while still having the other nearby within view and smell. It took me many hours of spray washing, scrubbing, sanitizing, cleaning, scrubbing, spray washing to get the thing clean. Someone had kept large birds in it and never cleaned it, AND THEN they kept monkeys in it. Filthy doesnt describe the mess that came off of this thing. And to boot, I found a dead and dessicated mouse in it as well. No kidding.

In the photos you can see a size comparison between Cagezilla and the Exel cage that I have the sugars in. Cagezilla is the size of about five Exel tower cages.

The possums now have a LOT more room to move around and I need to find some large branches and such to fill it out with for climbing. The only thing I would change now is that the 1" bar spacing is just too big. They cant escape, but you can easily see that it is harder for them to move around on the floor grate. So some busy climbing limbs will be very welcome.
