Sep 15, 1997 Inside of moms pouch Posted by: kazkoI missed a wonderful picture today. I woke everybody up in the middle of the day, and was able to get a lasting view of the baby's head attached to mommas teat and happily sucking away. The inside of her pouch is interesting looking.
Aug 28, 1997 Inside of moms pouch Posted by: kazkoI took the mother out last night and put her on my glider tummy viewer and was watching the baby. It is growing bigger and can be seen wiggling inside of the pouch. I have learned that if you pick the animal up and hold it by its tail so that it is hanging, you can get a great view of the pouch. The animals will stretch themselves out as if they were gliding, which will stretch the opening of the pouch so that you can see inside. I was able to seethe baby's nose and his legs and feet. Aug 14, 1997 Mom sleeping belly up Posted by: kazkoThe baby is already much bigger than it was a few days ago. I have taken the mother out a few times and she seems normal. She wants to jump around just as usual. I am finding her sleeping on her back now which I find interesting. Aug 11, 1997 We've got BABY! Posted by: kazko Wonderful news! I just found out that my female has a baby! I took her out tonight to play, and noticed that she had a lump in her tummy. Further inspection revealed an already birthed little one crawling around in her pouch. I have been busy this last week with a new job and havent given them much attention, so she could have had it anytime. I was surprised that she was very complacent around me. I remember my hamsters biting when they had babies, but she was much calmer than usual and even looked tired or sad. I put her on top of a clear plastic photo holder so she could sit still and I could see her underside. I could see the baby stick his feet out and move around the pouch. After I put her back into the cage, she sat still for a long time, and as we were staring at her, she hung herself by her feet from the top of the cage with her belly exposed to us and hanged there for about 5 minutes. The whole time we could watch the baby crawling around inside her pouch. It is almost as if she wanted us to see, or maybe she was begging for us to take it out for her. Jul 21, 1997 Feeding them by hand Posted by: kazkoThe animals have been acting a bit strange the past few weeks, but things seem to be getting back to normal. I guess they havent mated yet, but I hope they do so soon. My favorite thing to do with my animals is to feed them by hand after they wake up for the evening. Mine are usually awake by 10:00pm and are hungry. I was feeding them tonight while they were in their bed and they were stealing corn pieces out of each others mouth. It is so fun watching them chew on something, especially when it makes noise. Their little eyes relax a bit as they relish the days food. Jun 24, 1997 Female carrying her tail over her head Posted by: kazkoI have noticed that the female is now curling her tail up on her back constantly when awake. It seems like she is making it an easy target for the male. I am very curious to see the results of all of this. Maybe I will see an outcome in 16 days or so. Jun 22, 1997 I caught them mating Posted by: kazkoI came home tonight around 10:30pm and fed my animals, and I noticed that they hadnt come out of their nest yet. I saw that the male was on top of the female and he had the back of her neck in his mouth and was clamped around her with his legs. He was also moving his head back and forth in a hypnotic fashion tugging on her neck. To get rid of any possibility that he was sick or anything, I opened their nest and got them out, and the male just held on to the female tightly as she jumped around the cage. I can only assume that they are FINALLY starting to mate. It will be very interesting to see their mating instincts. I think I have seen one so far. Jan 30, 1997 Female always bites me Posted by: kazko I have noticed that the animals seem to have opposite gender personalities. The female is the one that never sleeps, is on constant watch for danger, wants to explore, wont trust me, jumps all over the place... Whereas the male sleeps through anything, trusts me easily, accepts food from me, will sit on my shoulder patiently and so on. The male is also the one that barks at night occasionally. I think it is because he wants my attention. When he does bark, I am able to stop it by shining a flashlight at him once... That's all that is necessary. The female has gone to biting me terribly. This morning I got very angry of it and I tried to find some way to scold her, but everything that I tried just made her more and more angry and offensive. Short of beating her senseless, I can think of nothing to tell her 'no', so I have decided to do the opposite and let her bite me to her hearts content through a glove. I am going to over handle her and hold her tight in my hand until the point that she realizes it is going to happen anyway and she doesnt bite. I cant help but wonder if it is her natural instinct since she might be having young soon or something motherly like that. Jan 27, 1997 Female doesnt like to be handled Posted by: kazkoThe female seems to keep biting me when I pick her up, so I think I have decided to not touch her for play anymore. The male should be enough company for her anyway. The male is very tame and loves to run around outside his cage. He has proven to be very fun, and I think it will be time to take him to my office soon to share with others. Jan 23, 1997 Experimenting with foods Posted by: kazkoI have been feeding them a mixture of seeds and nuts and so forth designed for large birds. I am trying other things to see what they like. I do know that they like apples and pecans. Jan 22, 1997 Barking all night by the bed Posted by: kazko The last two nights the animals have been barking. I have been able to quiet them by shining a flashlight at the cage from my bed. The barking sounds similar to a high-pitched small dog barking or yapping. They also make other sounds that I am soon going to try to record. I have heard them giggle and squeak and purr and so on... I have noticed that the male is darker in color and a bit smaller than the female. Again I think the male is the younger of the two. The female seems to be getting more used to me. She hardly crabs, if at all, anymore when I wake her up. I tried to feed them milk from an eye dropper, but neither of them liked it. The male took a drop and then started shaking his head frantically like he really didnt like the taste. I have taken a few digital photos of the animals and I posted a sheet at my office asking for possible names. My favorite of them so far has yet to be written. I have noticed that they will stay high on the wooden log that I placed in the cage. They like to eat in the corner of the cage and the log, hanging from the log, hanging from the cage side or ceiling, or anywhere else they can hide and feel safe. They seldom go to the cage floor for anything, however, when the lights are off and they are totally awake, they frolic all over the cage, including the floor. I was amazed at how quickly they both found the hamster water bottle I installed. Last night I caught the male hanging upside down on the side of the cage drinking from it. Jan 20, 1997 The two sugar gliders are not eating Posted by: kazkoThe animals have yet to eat or drink anything. I have successfully fed the male apple, but the female just doesnt want anything. I dipped the apple in water and the male licked it and ate it to his content, and I was able to get the female to drink just a little bit. I think I am going to run to the store and get some low-fat high-protein cat food. Phil told me that was their main staple. He didnt like to feed his animals live proteins. The female seems very fearful of being handled. She even bit me today a couple times when I tried to get her used to being handled (it didnt hurt). Once she is being held though, she accepts it. It is very hard to hold her steady. She just keeps on running from hand to hand and jumps at anything that looks like it will hold her. The male on the other hand is fearful of jumping and will only go half a foot. I think he is the younger one.
