 Update on Cricket

Posted by: ChristianGliderLover

Let me first thank everyone who has supported my little baby and me, especially over the unnecessary drama. I appreciate all the kindness, thank you.

Cricket was brought to the vet this morning, I was told the wound was severe. It was so deep, the fat was showing, and the wound would have been 18 inches long if on a human body. She had to have surgery, and I was notified that she pulled through surgery and was recovering. I was told I could pick her up in 20 minutes from now.

I am thankful it was successful, but worry if the worst is over or yet to come.

 Nibbler Squirrel Log

I began to keep track of my encounters with my wild pet squirrel. He seems to be doing well in the trees and he is still coming to me and enjoys being held and fed. So why not share this with you guys as it still excites the heck out of me.

 Lots to do this weekend

Okay so this weekend is when Trena is supposed to come get the girls .. I'm so excited/nervous.. There is just so much to get done.. I have to clean ALL of the girls cage contents, including the cage itself , and then i have to make sure all of their things are together..
THEN; For Guinea Pig preparation, we have decided to make a C&C cage. (Cubes & Coroplast) The size that we want to make it wont fit in the corner of my room the glider cage is at, so i have to move things around to make it fit. I already have it mapped out how i want it to be, and it gives me more floor space.. I'm also probably going to put some stuff in the closet so i have even more floor space... I'm really trying here, and as stressful as it is, i'm still excited about getting a guinea pig.. Before i decided i was going to take Mopsy, i did some research on Guinea Pigs because i realized I myself have never owned one. When i was younger my sister had one, but i never played with it much, and also didn't know much about them . So i set on my journey to find good guinea pig websites to look around on, and ask questions.. I found a lot.. I actually pulled up my notepad on my computer and started taking side notes, some in detail, others very brief.. I also wrote down toy ideas, and i'm very excited to make them . This weekend we also have to look for a big sheet of Coroplast to make the bottom of the cage, and im going to see about looking around Walmart and Lowes and stuff for the grids because i don't like the idea of having to buy them online, and waiting for them to get shipped here.. I've been looking forward to this all week, but I've also been dreading it..
Every other time I've ever thought about selling or giving the girls up, i get a little teary eyed , and i'm so nervous that im gonna cry a little when it comes time for Trena to take the girls home with her.. But i know its for the best so i will suck it up as much as possible.. I also wanted the guinea pig to distract me from being too sad, or bored.. because after the gliders are gone, the only pet i have it my 6 year old cat and all she does is lay around , so she's not very much fun, and she's more of daddy's girl, so she hangs around with my dad more often than me, but i don't mind..
I'm looking forward to meeting Trena in person, and giving Mopsy a good forever home.. Mopsy will be by herself for at MOST a month, my hope is no longer than that because im planning to get her a friend because i read that they like gliders, like companionship, so a Guinea Pig got added to my Christmas list so Mopsy would have a friend.. (This my dad laughed at.. A live guinea pig for a Christmas present.. now how to rap that? :D )

Anyway.. Just thought i'd get some of this out there... Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions, etc..

 Hazel finds a new home

Posted by: kazko
-----
Five year old Hazel has been in a cage by herself since she had been estranged from her colony by the two younger girls. It took a month of isolation to heal from the wounds and then I tried to reintroduce her which ended up in more wounds. I decided to not try any more. I could have pulled a male from the boys cage and kept her as a pair, but maintaining a fourth cage long term is not in my plan, I am actually interested in shrinking the inventory of gliders.

Lucky Glider had a male that recently lost his cage mate so they decided to pair him up with Hazel. So today Hazel was dropped off and immediately paired with the boy and all went well. So far so good with the match and the hope is that the boy will be better off and even more adoptable as a pair.

Hazel is really tame and quiet so hopefully some of that will rub off on the boy who hasnt gotten much attention in his life. The remaining three in her colony over here are doing fine and I might consider adopting them out if something presents itself.

 Nibbler Returns!

Posted by: kazko
-----
I am so excited. Nibbler released himself out the back door on 11-15-2011 and then today, 13 days later, when I was out looking for squirrels, he ran down the tree and jumped right into my arms. It froze last night and I think he's sick of the cold. So I just carb loaded him and he went to bed on the mantel. I think I'll put him out later when he wakes and hang his pouch high up on a tree. Perhaps he'll use it to stay warm. Perhaps he will keep coming to visit me for good food and treats.

The squirrels seem to stir around 10am, so that is probably the best time to catch him out and about unless he begins to sleep in his pouch.

 RV Camping at Turpentine Creek

Posted by: kazko
-----
This weekend we visited some "hillbilly" relatives in the Ozarks and had a great time with them while rv camping. We set up our telescope and shared some of Jupiter and other stuff with the family.

On the way out we decided to overnight at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge which is a few miles South of Eureka Springs Arkansas. We were the only ones at the camping area so we got choice pick of spots ten feet from a cat cage. Overnight fee includes admission into the refuge in the morning which was very nice. So we drove in before sundown, set up camp and then were serenaded by lions roaring while snuggling next to a very nice camp fire watching deer run by.

Here is a little bit of our experience for you.

 Opportunity Knocks .

Posted by: suggiemom02

So finding the girls a home is more difficult than i thought. I've posted ads, and got MANY replies.. like pages worth of emails , but many of them arent very knowledgeable about gliders, or their info is wrong.
One person emailed me and was telling me all about her glider that she needed a friend for, and then explained to me her "Healthy" diet of pellets !
So i deleted the email and continued my search. I thought i;d found a real winner, even set up a day to meet, and everything. But, she no showed me ! hasnt emailed me or anything since..

Then a couple days ago, i got an email on here from a member that was interested in the girls.
Tandt1n2 emailed and said she was interested in the girls and hoped they would help out her gliders boy to girl ratio.
She also mentioned she had a guinea pig she needed to rehome..

Here is what im hoping to accomplish.
I hope to be able to sort of trade.. I emailed her back and im wanting to get more info on the guinea pig, and talk to my parents about it.
one of my worries is that transportation will ruin it all.. She lives in Indiana, and i am in Kentucky and can't drive out of town to meet her or anything.. I feel its very unfair that way though ..
I hope it all works out..
I'm excited, worried, and everything all in onee..

If anyone has any tips i'd appreciate it.

 Pausing the introductions

Posted by: Paani
-----
I think things went too fast for them. I had felt it would be better to meet and greet sooner rather than later because I wanted them in the same cage over Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm going home for both weeks and the girl next door will be caring for them; I'd feel better if she only had to think about one cage and one set of meals but I think Lele is just too traumatized right now.

If I anthropomorphized the situation, I'd say Lele is like the little kid who thinks the whole world is picking on him and reacts accordingly. Judah appears to be a bully but Lele was standoffish even with Anson who wants nothing more in the world than to sleep and eat and run in his wheel. If Judah was human and could understand, he'd get SUCH a spanking for being such a turd but as it is, I just have to keep them separated until they decide they can be friends.

Laki, Lele and Anson spent last night together in the big cage so they got to play with the Stealth and Custom Cruiser and have more room to bounce around in while Judah took a time out in the smaller cage but everyone is in their normal cages for now. Laki and Lele crabbed up a storm while I was moving them -- the clatter was probably too much for Anson because he came out of the pouch looking for somewhere else to nap so let him go back to the main cage where he crawled into Judah's pouch with nary a peep.

In the meantime, I moved Laki and Lele's cage away from the main cage so Judah can't intimidate them through the wire mesh. It's still in the same room so they get accustomed to the sights and sounds and smells but they'll get some relief from Judah.

 Intro not going well

Posted by: Paani
-----
So I thought tonight would be a good time to try introductions between my original pair, Anson and Judah, and the Hawaiian rescues, Laki and Lele. Both Judah and Anson seemed very interested in their neighbors the past couple of nights with Judah clinging to the cage side and shaking it, even trying to bite the wire. I interpreted that as eagerness to get to his new friends.

Not!

I got both pairs in separate bonding pouches and let them loose on opposite sides of the bathtub. Well ... "let them loose" is a not quite the right phrase as it was a struggle to get them to leave their pouches.

Anson seems to get along well with Laki and Lele but Judah is a whole other story. The one good thing tonight was how he seemed to see me as a position of safety (for the first time). Judah has Laki and Lele frightened -- he got into a furball with Lele four or five times tonight (only a couple seconds then they separated) but it's not looking like those two will ever get along.

I'm trying to figure out what to do now. Can I have them exchange cages for a day or two to get used to each other's smell? At this point I think it's more a dominance thing than the smells. Judah had Anson completely buffaloed and wants Laki and Lele to submit too. Lele isn't having any of it although it doesn't seem like he's trying to dominate Anson.

I tried a brand new neutral pouch and Laki and Lele would NOT go in it with Judah in there and even took about 20 minutes to decide to try it out with Anson inside (I let Judah get inside a bonding pouch and then closed it so they could try to make friends with Anson).

This has been my worst fear. :(
